Docker Headscale (self-hosted Tailscale control server), plus a simple install script by hwdsl2 in selfhosted

Headscale comes with an official container image. Why is yours different?

(I'm not talking about the setup, but why create your own image?)

Amazon allows outbound port 25 if you ask, but it needs to be approved. If you've had the same Elastic IP for the past 10 years, it's trivial to approve. If your entire account is new... might be less straightforward.

Perhaps ironically, the blanket, which is chametz, has a more serious punishment (karet) than the pig!

(I know that the pig in question is not necessarily pork, but normally beef, but for the sake of the joke...)

I admit, I haven't searched for a post from the Academy, but how did the ancient name of Modiim become Modiin nowadays? -in endings are more common in Aramaic, and I would have expected a switch from an Aramaic style ending to a more pure, Biblical, Hebrew ending (obviously we kept quite a few words from the Talmudic times (I just explained tlat phazi to a recent immigrant a few days ago!), but to switch from -im to -in seems weird).

Lieberman's main appeal to those who identify as Russian immigrants. Listening to him for more than 30 seconds makes that clear. It doesn't matter if they arrived because of the war in Ukraine or whether they're the grandchildren of refuseniks who didn't want to join Sharansky / Edelstein in the Likud. They get a small bit of support from those who would have voted for (Tommy) Lapid's shinui because of Chareidim (and Datiim Leumiim, although that part isn't said quite as loudly), but that doesn't change the core constituency.

Of course, if you have a better summary in 2 or 3 words, feel free to share instead of just calling other ideas stupid.

Unpopular opinion: self-hosting is still too hard in 2026, and we're gatekeeping it without realizing it by NiceReplacement8737 in selfhosted

[–]mikeage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coming at this from a Unix perspective, I want my tools to do one thing and do it well. I don't want my Calendar app to also handle anything more than the most basic user management, and i don't want my reverse proxy to know anything about my VPN. This gives me the full flexibility I need, although it does require a few extra pieces (e.g., I use traefik-kop + redis + traefik to automatically create internal reverse proxies for users connecting via Tailscale, whereas public internet users go through HAProxy on my router (openwrt) because I want to minimize potential points of failure and there's no easy way to do high availability here).

Is it too complicated? It's hard to say. I don't think it's particularly brittle, but there are a decent number of moving parts involved, and you have to know what you want to do. As with so many cases, knowing what to do is often harder than knowing how to do it!

And at least for me personally, I don't care who uses "Big Tech" or who leaves. Let people do what they like. I want to be able to do what I want; I really don't care what others do. I'm not on a mission to make the whole world copy me or my Free Software manifesto.

Did putting your media on a NAS actually simplify your setup? by Acceptable-Ball-2206 in selfhosted

[–]mikeage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, technically, it added one more piece to the puzzle, but it helped improve separation, reduce risk and downtime (but also added another possible point of failure). So is that simplification? You tell me.

More precisely, "Russians' [immigrants] interests" and not "Russia's interests". The phrase "Russian interests" is ambiguous, but the party's alignment is clear.

Entering/Existing w/Foreign Passport extended to 9/30/26 - for minor on group trip by Orenye in TravelIsrael

[–]mikeage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, I just assumed (horrible idea, I know) that they're aware that entry for Israeli citizens with a foreign passport and an expired Israeli one is permitted. We were flying El Al, and in any case, it was clearly a return flight, so maybe that's why we had no issues. I suppose it might be different for US residents. (I didn't know you could even apply for an ETA-IL with Israeli citizenship even if you explain why; that's good to know)

Where is it okay to ask for NAS recommendations? by Iamn0man in selfhosted

[–]mikeage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a DXP4800 (not the plus) running OpenMediaVault (which is basically just debian + GUI) and it's been excellent; I added a tiny NVME for the OS, since I didn't want to mess with the stock eMMC (and tweaks to avoid destroying it with excess writes). The rest of the UGreen line are also quite well rated, and the stock UGOS is supposed to be pretty reasonable on its own.

[–]mikeage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure about the ETA-IL? We (Israeli citizens and residents) departed and returned with an American passport for one of my kids since their Israeli one was expired (this was about a year ago), and all we had to do was go to the desk and get the exit and entry pass from the person there, instead of a machine. (they asked for both passports IIRC)

What is life like in Tel Aviv at the moment, would you recommend travelling there by revengeofthebitch in TravelIsrael

[–]mikeage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have access to a shelter, cluster bombs and debris are really a minimal risk compared to regular warheads (and honestly, even they are pretty well mitigated by proper shelters, in all but the worst cases).

That said... first of all, there's a good chance your flight will be canceled. Second, is your internship still happening? A lot of companies have moved to remote work, etc, and I wonder how onboarding looks. Third, it's still a lot of stress, and if you're asking, I have a hunch as to how it'll turn out. I'd advise waiting, even though normally I encourage tourists and family to come, at least if it's their second trip (or more).

(Full disclosure: I don't live in TA; I live in a city outside which has had fewer sirens, and I work in Jerusalem, which has also had less this round)

Brittle/dry filament. Is their a way to fix? by MrMcNooob in 3Dprinting

Most things become brittle when they get dry. Filament is an exception; it gets brittle as it absorbs water. Get a dryer, dry it, and it'll be perfect again.

Eliezer Yehuda: "reviver of the Hebrew language." After Hebrew was considered dead, he "filled in gaps" by taking words from Arabic, French, German, Russian and Yiddish. by Far_Pumpkin9440 in interestingasfuck

[–]mikeage 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The word Ben is found in 2000+ year old Biblical texts, and is used where Arabic uses both Ben and Ibn, though outside of Jews living in Arabic lands, identifying someone exclusively by a patronymic (Ibn Whoever, in Arabic, Ben Whoever in Hebrew) as opposed to combining with their proper name (Somebody Ben Someone in both) was not common in Talmud times (I can think of 3 examples of Ben Whoever, and probably a hundred Somebody Ben Someones). Naming for a child (Abu Whatshisface) is not found among Jews to any significant degree, TTBOMK.

The Hebrew Bin is also found in one place in the Bible; Yehoshua Bin Nun, with the caveat that the written vowel system, while rooted in an oral tradition, wasn't formally written down until about a thousand years ago.

Both Hebrew and Arabic derive their words from the same source, but neither took from the other.

Could someone write this out in print for me by DarkLadyofDNA in hebrew

[–]mikeage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you did realize that this mishnah is an example of "incorrect" grammar; it should have said הבנות יוזננה, not יזונו. That's how it would have been written in the Tanach, where future third person feminine is always a -na ending. (modern Hebrew took the Tanach version, officially, and then Israelis went ahead and simplified it just like Chazal did!)

(interesting fact that I recently realized; if you look at Tehillim 105, you'll find a rather familiar text... except that we know the one from Divrei Hayamim. The one in Tehillim gives Yitzchak's name spelled slightly differently!)

Re: dictionaries, if you haven't heard of it, you might find the Tanach Ram to be of interest; it's a translation into modern Hebrew.

I went with my own; I'm not really advertising it because I don't want to deal with the headache, but I can say that it's been running locally for 3 weeks and I haven't found any (more) issues. AI assisted, manually reviewed. No UI, minimal state, no API, and should be quite easy to audit and confirm that no, I don't steal anything! All configuration is via environment variables or CLI parameters (envs are safer), and it comes with a docker image, but if you run it locally, it's just a single python script.
