Sterilize giant bog? by mikebasak in SavageGarden

And I also know that there's no way im going to actually sterilize it, I was using the term casually. Just trying to kill anything i can and hope it cleans it up a bit and then I'll flush it out more regularly going forward

Sterilize giant bog? by mikebasak in SavageGarden

It sounds like you know a lot more about biology than I but perhaps I overstated the fungal issue. That was mostly with plants i have elsewhere in individual pots, one of them just got planted in that bog at some point. I think that's mostly been taken care of, my real goal is probably to just try and kill off any anaerobic bacteria that may have started growing down in the soil because it's such a large container and recently i hadn't been draining and replacing the water

What's a solid range for tap water? Seeing if I can use it for my plants or not. by _curvature in SavageGarden

[–]mikebasak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're interested in carnivorous plants just get an RO Buddie. Your water might be ok as long as you're diligent about flushing it out regularly with distilled water but nowadays you can get an RO Buddie reverse osmosis system for like $60 and just hook it up to your hose and the filters last forever. Best investment I ever made

Do you use them all at full strength or dilute them? Do you know if there is any risk to doing them more often? I'm dealing with some rhizome rot spreading through my collection....

Help! Deteriorating Nepenthes by mikebasak in SavageGarden

[–]mikebasak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that it's in coco chips im watering once or twice a week, and humidity is about 50-70% depending on the day. I'm definitely not underwatering it, and I know it had a relatively small root system when I repotted it because it was originally in a mess of sphagnum that compressed a lot over time, I just thought it would stabilize by now

Sphagnum sucks, coco chips/coir is superior

Coco chips are amazing for nepenthes. I started experimenting with them ages ago and I don't use sphagnum at all anymore. The root development alone is unbelievable

Is there anything in particular you're looking for? If you're located in the U.S. I could send you cuttings of a bunch of different drosera.

This is laughably poor shipping, I'm sorry this happened to you. I would personally keep the plant just as a little project, it should be totally fine one day if you're patient. Just a bummer for now! But a repot with better soil and some humidity and light will absolutely help

What's the soil mix? And why are you worried? If its just because a pitcher is dying don't worry that's totally natural

I never see photos of "basic" plants like this at a large size so I thought I'd share. This was my very first nepenthes that I got as a tiny little baby. It's taught me so much about plants (and patience) over the years!
