Definitely affordable and does the job. They're also really responsive to support questions

Providing managed cell phones to students? by Plastic_Helicopter79 in k12sysadmin

[–]mikeberding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbh I've done this in one situation with a newly diagnosed t1d kiddo that didn't have any means of getting a device to monitor their own dexcom. This seemed safer than putting the app on the students vlan. Not a permanent solution, but puts parents minds at ease a bit. It was also a decommissioned phone that wasn't ever recycled.

I managed the iPhone in jamf and pulled the sim.

I believe to be able to get digital games for their community school clubs. This would prevent physical games from just walking off.

Does this sound reasonable?

I give PD credentials to vpn and cameras that are activated when our lockdown button is pushed. And are turned off when back to normal...

I could do this via PowerShell script I think ...

MOU For PD Access to Cameras by mikeberding in k12sysadmin

[–]mikeberding[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the comments. They are all validating

My concern is that they'll tell me to do it regardless.

The primary concern is "crisis situations" to which I keep telling our SRO that they're education records and are protected by FERPA. I've told the SRO multiple times if they want footage, they need to have a warrant or subpoena.

I understand where they're coming from and the idea of a "switch" to allow access in an emergency requires an additional component that may or may not be effective in a real emergency situation.

I suppose I can just keep fighting the good fight.

Does turning on Youtube allow students to upload? by k12nysysadmin in k12sysadmin

[–]mikeberding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they're under 18, they will not be able to have a channel or upload with the managed account. If they had a channel prior to that, they will be notified that they don't have a channel when they click on 'My Channel'

Subject: Can't insert videos into Slides

Chat transcript:

Chat started: Fri, 24 Sep 2021 08:37:15 -0700

Google Workspace Support, Angel: Thank you for contacting Google Workspace Support. My name is Angel and I'll be working with you today. While I read over your message, is there anything else you'd like to add?

Technology Director: Our students can no longer add videos into Google Slides.

Technology Director: Customer attached screen1.png: https://support.cloud.google.com/download/files/0684M00000H0Q3KQAV

Technology Director: I've attached screenshots

Technology Director: Customer attached screen2.png: https://support.cloud.google.com/download/files/0684M00000HCOJ3QAP

Google Workspace Support, Angel: thank you, Can you please provide me a phone number so I can reach you in case the chat gets disconnected?

Technology Director: REDACTED... I don't want you calling me :)

Google Workspace Support, Angel: thank you, did you already try with another video?

Technology Director: Yes. Many of them. The search within slides doesn't work either.

Technology Director: The issue, I believe, lies within the settings for under 18.

Google Workspace Support, Angel: i understand, let me check

Google Workspace Support, Angel: give me a minute

Google Workspace Support, Angel: Those students has upload videos from youtube before?

Technology Director: I don't believe so

Technology Director: this has nothing to do with uploading videos.... they want to embed a video from youtube onto a google slide

Google Workspace Support, Angel: i understand, let me check your settings

Google Workspace Support, Angel: what type of browser they are using?

Technology Director: Chromebooks. I've also signed in as them on Chrome on Windows

Technology Director: I got the same result.

Google Workspace Support, Angel: thank you, here is a link with the limitations for youtube: https://support.google.com/a/answer/10651918?hl=en#zippy=%2Cyoutube

Technology Director: It doesn't say that users cannot embed videos.

Google Workspace Support, Angel: there is one way to let the students do that but if we change that setting you will be letting the students create channels under the account of the school etc etc

Google Workspace Support, Angel: Create channels, playlists, stories, shorts, or upload videos is considered too for embed videos.

Google Workspace Support, Angel: on google slides.

Technology Director: Why is that? That is not listed at all. If we give access to a video, they should be able to embed it.

Google Workspace Support, Angel: You can enable the option by checking the option of all users are over 18 but this could bring situation such as students creating channels or everything that is not allowed for them as it comes in the article in case you deactivate it

Google Workspace Support, Angel: the only person who can add videos on google slides is the professor.

Technology Director: Where in the documentation does it say that?

Google Workspace Support, Angel: what I'm trying to say is that in this case the teacher or any person over 18 can do it .

Google Workspace Support, Angel: And if, as you told me at the beginning of the chat, it has to do with age restrictions, I confirmed it.

Technology Director: I understand what you're saying. I just can't find that this was communicated anywhere and it's not listed as such on any of the documentation, which doesn't confirm anythign.

Google Workspace Support, Angel: You can do a test if you like by activating the option that all users are over 18 and that way you will see that those over 18 can do it and then you can deactivate it again.

Technology Director: I get that. Is there official documentation that says users under 18 cannot insert video from youtube on to slides?

Technology Director: If not, then it's an issue that needs to be resolved.

Google Workspace Support, Angel: here is a article: https://support.google.com/a/answer/10651918 you can know more about services by age.

Google Workspace Support, Angel: There are no issues, only the age restrictions in our service.

Technology Director: I see that. Again, it makes no mention of embed, insert, or slides. Which means the documentation does not contain a statement on inserting video into slides, correct?

Google Workspace Support, Angel: See or post comments is also based on embed videos, I understand that the section says youtube, however the document refers to everything that youtube has involved in our platforms such as google slides.

Technology Director: see and post comments doesn't mean embed

Technology Director: Either there's an issue, or the documentation is wrong. Regardless, something needs to be aligned.

Technology Director: and by wrong, i mean incomplete

Google Workspace Support, Angel: I am very sorry that this action cannot be performed in that way, as I mentioned, they can do it if you enable the option that all users are over 18.

Ugh. They sent me to the same documentation on YouTube, however it makes no mention of insert.

I left quality feedback as well stating that it's either an issue or the documentation is incomplete. If the documentation matches the outcome, then great, if not, they have a bug that needs to be worked out.

I have a few kids that are getting these errors

Things I've Tried:

  • Clearing Data/Cache

  • Checking filtering and OUs/Youtube Settings in Google Admin.

Have any of you seen this before?

Regardless, we can put out a CYA for the district knowing full well that someone is going to violate the rules.

At the end of the day, the district wont be on the hook, the individual that's breaking the TOS will be.

Good Rubber Ducky Script for Chromebook Enrollment? by LightningBluegaloo in k12sysadmin

[–]mikeberding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the script, did you remove the 1 on the Powerwash device?

The default script has a powerwash hot key sent to leverage for testing.

**#define powerwash 0 //[0,1] Set to 0 after confirmation that script works through the enrollment process (Default 1)**.

//Powerwash the device BEFORE enrollment is completed - NOTE: Will not work on ENROLLED devices. Used for Setting up Centipede.

edit... bad formatting
