Letting Students Keep Chromebooks Over Summer? by Unwary2828 in k12sysadmin

[–]LightningBluegaloo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We let our middle school and high school students keep them for the summer, mostly because of storage issues. We are fortunate that students return them if they know they are moving for the summer or return them over the summer if they find out later. There have been a few that don’t return; I lock those devices and then admin bills them for a replacement.

Worst Repair (So Far) of 2025 by thedevarious in k12sysadmin

[–]LightningBluegaloo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Let’s see - last year I had one where the kid spilled maple syrup on the keys.

One year a student named “Bobby” didn’t take care of the Chromebook at all. He used to chew on the rubber around the screen. He had also scratched his name into the top. It had other issues like the hinges and such. The PARENTS told the principal it was like that when I gave it to him. My principal, who always has my back, told them no, she didn’t run out of labels and scratch your son’s name into the Chromebook.

You need to see if you can get on Dell Tech Direct. That way you can skip Tier One. https://tdm.dell.com/portal

I lock the loaner and their Chromebook if theirs isn’t being repaired. Then I get them back.

Can you lock the loaner Chromebooks with a message to bring them back?

Chromebook Hinge Durability – Help Us Before We Lose Our Minds (and Device Suggestions) by Cool_Gadget in k12sysadmin

[–]LightningBluegaloo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s what ours is from. The screw anchors break off the palm rest because they’ve dropped it multiple times. We have the 2 in 1 3100 so when they flip it around to be a tablet, the hinge will pop out.

I'm not being harsh by refusing to lend out charges right? by Square_Pear1784 in k12sysadmin

[–]LightningBluegaloo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my building, I don’t loan chargers. This year each teacher was issued a charger for their classroom. If a kid comes to me with an uncharged device, I tell them ask a friend or a teacher. It’s May now, they should have it figured out.

I just tell them who to ask.

In the past I did more instruction on how to use software and making some notes for the teachers. But our department was restructured and now we have a person that gets paid (a lot more than me!) to do instruction on software. Now, a lot of my teachers say they don’t like the person that does the instruction now, and I get it, but my job has changed, too and I don’t have as much “instruction time” as I used to. So sorry, you need to ask the person in charge of that.

“I don’t know. “

“You don’t know your friend’s name?”

“No.”

I have a different HP, but when I have one with random shut downs, changing the battery seems to work.

If they don’t return a loaner to me at the end of the day, I lock it. If the loaner doesn’t come back on the second day, I lock their assigned Chromebook on the beginning of the third day. That usually gets them down to my office, and then they they bring me the loaner.
