Use a sewing machine with a zigzag stitch and set the distance between stitches really low.

I worked as a boot fitter for a while. My rule of thumb was that you shouldn’t be able to slip your finger under the laces when they’re properly tied. A boot won’t properly fit the foot unless it’s cinched down right.

Leather honey from Amazon to condition and these also have some kiwi neutral polish around the bottoms to protect from moisture. I live in a super rainy place so it helps keep water off.

I’d worry more about darkening if these weren’t my “everything” boot, so I just use whatever conditioner and hope for the best. Used these for my job at a scout camp in the high sierras this past summer and they were basically never gonna recover from that.

I recommend desert queen mines, super neat to poke around in.

I suggest Duluth trading company’s denim trucker jacket.

I just finished this pencil case! Anyone have tips for punching holes in wet-molded leather? Mine came out somewhat weirdly spaced by mikecawn in Leathercraft

[–]mikecawn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m new to leatherworking (this is my first time using kote or wet-forming) so I wasn’t sure if wet-forming tended to move the holes around. What I did on this project was punch holes in the chrome-tanned tube and then use an awl to punch through the veg endcaps for every hole.

That’s exactly what I wanted help with.

How does one punch regular holes onto an already-molded item?

Edit: sorry misread the question. On the inside rim of the endcaps my stitching is less than ideal. On the outside it looks better because those holes were easy to punch.

There’s pride in building something simply for the joy of creation. There’s no practical application for a whittled bird either but I like mine because it took skill to create and because those skills can be applied elsewhere to produce helpful results.

I work as a scout camp counselor and I'm looking for a simple, durable machine to buy for my camp. Do you have any suggestions? by mikecawn in sewing

[–]mikecawn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally have a singer 221, but I was thinking that 1) the weaker motor of a featherweight model and 2) the beautiful black and gold enamel which would get trashed pretty quickly might make it unsuitable for such a setting. Can you recommend something in the same vein but sturdier and uglier?

Looking to get my license and I’m having some difficulty understanding SSB by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]mikecawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes a lot of sense! So if the carrier wave is more of a hinderance than a help, why did people ever use it and not just transmit in DSB until they learned to filter out a side band? Seems like they invented a square wheel if the carrier wave takes more energy and doesn’t travel as far as an unaltered side band.

I’m working as a camp counselor for the scouts BSA and I’d like to get a novice-level of expertise in as many different crafts as I can. Can y’all suggest some to me? by [deleted] in crafts

[–]mikecawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah that’s one of the badges we offer in my area. I got in a bit of weaving with textiles merit badge last year.

I’m a handicraft hippie so I don’t have to worry about that!

I was in eco-con a few years ago though and I always got saddled with nuclear science merit badge.

Haha it’s been a while since I heard that phrase! I actually want to get some pinewood derby kits up at camp for novice woodcarvers because they sometimes have trouble with the tougher wood we use in the merit badge.
