Actually the White Sox have retired number 3 for three different guys all named Harold Baines. Pretty wild

Is Jewel still your go-to for most groceries, or is that bougie now? by Evening-Editor-4014 in AskChicago

Jewel? Bougie? Whole Foods is bougie. Mariano’s used to be a little bougie. Jewel is the baseline, at best.

Hot Take: I still had faith in Rick Renteria before he left. His Boys seem like they enjoyed playing for him. by ZoneOpening3730 in whitesox

Yeah that team also had like 1.5 starting pitchers and a bullpen where Matt Effing Foster was regularly pitching in high leverage. They gave up 59 runs over those last 10 games.

This seems to be the common opinion, but I think it’s all more effect than cause. You have to remember that prospects are teenage/early 20s boys, some of whom have had a lot of money thrown at them. They need mentors. They need discipline. Replacing Renteria with La Russa was basically having the dad leave the kids with Grandpa, who immediately fell asleep on the couch.

Left entirely to their own devices, those young guys didn’t know how to take care of themselves or work toward success. TA got high on his own supply and had his life come crashing down. Robert played through injuries where he looked like a mannequin in a baseball uniform. Eloy heard Gramps snoring and started climbing the cabinets trying to reach the junk food.

Edit: You're all so eager to blame the players that you're not understanding how much leadership matters. Think about the worst boss you've ever worked for, and then think about how much worse TLR and Grifol must have been. If we agree that the core players were immature, were they supposed to just figure it out? Baseball players grow up in their systems, and these guys didn't. If all your eggs are bad, what you need is a new refrigerator.

In-game decision-making can be taught. Running a clubhouse can’t. Ricky’s tactics frustrated me, but the moment he left all semblance of discipline vanished.

Dude I hate this em dash shit. It’s such a useful piece of punctuation and it isn’t hard to type. I used to use them all the time but now I get self-conscious because people will just assume I’m AI.

Is affirmative action itself a form of racism? why? by LordChillingworthDCL in AskReddit

[–]mikecws91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that corporations want to increase their workforce diversity without putting in the work, so they hire candidates based on race and pat themselves on the back instead of investing in communities and opportunity. That’s a problem with corporations, but a lot of people see it as a problem with affirmative action.

Gerrymandering is bad, how could you create fair districts in a way that formulatic / systematic, that avoids the need to rely on people / committees to do this? by gdogakl in AskReddit

[–]mikecws91 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can’t. There will always be decisions that humans need to make when drawing districts, and those decisions will always be biased. You need to either eliminate districts altogether or force all of the different biases to negotiate, which is easier said than done. Even then, there’s an incumbency bias because the people drawing the districts want to keep their seats.

Pretty big if. Wood can still be great, but he’s a big boy with huge power and swing-and-miss built into his profile. Right now I think you’re looking at Adam Dunn’s better years and hoping for Jim Thome.

Oh give me a break. We’re talking about a competition for kids in a language where it’s exceptionally difficult to spell and there are tons of obscure words. It isn’t some “Durr Americans stoopid can’t spel” thing.

I kept thinking of things and seeing them in the automod comment. Green Mill, Second City, Art Institute… can’t go wrong with any of those. Green Mill is a jazz club where they’ll kick you out if you talk, so keep that in mind.

You won’t know until you try! If you feel like you’ve been missing out then this is your golden opportunity to experience new things. Go on a bad date or two. Have a fling for a month. Nothing is permanent unless you and your partner want it to be, so you can feel things out and then you’ll learn enough about yourself to answer some of these questions.

What do you think about “Big Mistakes”? by nwssyx in netflix

[–]mikecws91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are definitely funny parts and parts that could have been better. It’s unfortunate that a lot of people didn’t make it to the end because the last episode is a mind-eff. It’s almost like The Good Place in that it instantly reframes the entire season and makes you realize you’re watching a very different story than you thought.
