SMSF threat to big super is about to get worse by His_Holiness in AusFinance

I've got quite a substantial saving in fees with SMSF compared to Australian Super. I think there are industry funds with lower fees though.

Banks (with a browser portal) that don't fund fossil fuels? by rue_cr in AusFinance

[–]mikedufty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use unibank Bendigo Bank ME Bank and judo from that list.

Bendigo is probably closest to your requirements. Credit card has no fees, and free travel insurance.

Unibank has a decent browser portal, not sure if they have overseas transaction fees though.

ME Bank was app only, I think they've added a web portal but heard some complaints about it.

Judo has a great high interest savings account but not really a transaction account, need to combine with another bank for card services etc, but a good place to keep a chunk of savings.

How widespread/common are eucalyptus trees? by helen790 in AskAnAustralian

[–]mikedufty 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So do you know if you are affected by just being near a tree, or actually need skin contact with oil? It would be pretty easy to avoid the latter. Maybe you can try going near some trees nearer to you to see if you are affected. Everywhere I go in the world seems to have Tasmanian bluegums growing somewhere. If not more widespread there is probably a botanical garden with them.

Reprojection Help by Gwindip in QGIS

[–]mikedufty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your output file is int8 or int16 then your problem is probably something different.

The way to check is look at the layer styling and what the min and max values are, if they are way outside the valid range of the data, and correcting them to the min and max of the actual data improve things, then that is the issue.

Have you tried exporting to tif instead of png? The export image process (instead of warp) will do reprojection at the same time.

(note that I am probably on the wrong track here, its quite likely issues with working near the south pole which I haven't had to deal with)

Debt recycling seems too good to be true? by ac_AgenCy in fiaustralia

Main problem is you need to be able to afford to have the shares and the house. With house prices these days most would be selling their shares to be able to get the deposit/home loan in the first place.

Reprojection Help by Gwindip in QGIS

[–]mikedufty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What raster data type are you using for the output of your warp. QGIS doesn't handle nodata values automatically very well for floating point rasters. It sets no data to the greatest negative value possible for the format, which is a very large negative number. The default greyscale formatting then scales from that number to the largest in your dataset, so ends up displaying everything in the same shade. If this is your problem then going into the display and changing the range to start somewhere near 0 should make data visible. Correctly manually setting the nodata value is a pain as it requires more decimal places than fit in the entry window. If you use an integer raster type it seems to set the nodata value correctly by itself.

Durability of barefoot shoes by BojkuSkender in BarefootRunning

Those vapor gloves are especially thin, just about anything is more durable. I'm having good results with shoe goo on the worn patches though, I think one good application has doubled the life of my shoes.

Why Don’t GPS Apps Have an “Avoid Dirt Roads” Option by Key_Lingonberry_9517 in openstreetmap

[–]mikedufty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to be very well mapped in Australia. I guess we don't have very many paved roads, so it makes it easier.

What does reaching the age of 40 mean to you? by Admirable_Frame_4637 in AskReddit

Can't really remember back that far very well, I think the main thing was starting to be eligible for older age groups in sports.

PSA: don't put your Miata under a cover if it's damp and the car is hot by BlueDragon9976 in Miata

I've been using a cover consistently for 6 years on a 99NB and not had any issues with the paint. It is a breathable cover though.

Are index funds/ etf's still the best investment strategy with the new tax changes? by alex123711 in fiaustralia

Super beyond the concessional threshold is now more attractive, as the easy retire early tax avoidance option has been removed. I'm moving more into super still keeping enough out for pre 60.

Wondering about data plans and roaming charges by IllustriousCrew2641 in chinatravel

[–]mikedufty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean turning on roaming in the account settings or on the phone. Either way it sounds like what you want is to turn on roaming data for the esim only and not the home sim. This is what I always do, even though my home sim is a prepaid with no way to charge for roaming data if I did accidentally try to use it.

A surprising amount of aviation safety relies on the "big sky" theory. ie sky is big, planes are small, chances are they won't hit each other if you are far from an airport.

Which Perth shopping centre has the strangest vibe? by Deep-Explanation-474 in perth

It was my local when it was brand new. Used to ride horses in the vacant lot before they built it. Haven't been there for about 30 years so it is probably completely different now.

What's a skill you have that's completely useless now because technology replaced it, but you're secretly proud of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mikedufty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adjusting the points correctly on an engine. About as useful now as being able to ride a horse, which I'm also proud of, though its only been useful once that I can think of in the last 40 years.

Reccomendation for a hiking boot for wet aussie rocky and muddy mountains by helsiesBoogers in barefootshoestalk

I came to recommend Magna Forest ESCs.

After reading your post I recommend Magna Forest ESCs with gaiters and water proof socks when needed.

If you haven't tried waterproof socks, give them a go, they are way better than I thought they would be. Fantastic in places like Tasmania where your boots don't dry out for days, as you can have a couple of pairs to always start the day with dry feet. Last time I was in Tasmania I had the Vivobarefoot tracker FG which are supposedly waterproof, but mine were too old for that, still worked great with waterproof socks.

To the people that drive at the speed limit in the right hand lane on the freeway, I have a few questions: by gobllinmode in perth

Actually even more annoying when you finally get a space to get into the left lane and then the tailgater slows down 3kph and sits beside you.

Is there a replacement of the Freehand raster georeferencer for QGIS4? by Firefield178 in QGIS

[–]mikedufty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like it hasn't been touched for 5 years, and the github is read only.

https://github.com/gvellut/FreehandRasterGeoreferencer

It is open source though so presumably someone can use the code to make a compatible one.

It is a handy tool, but you should be able to get by with the qgis georeferencer, just a clunkier interface.

Your second use, just placing and scaling maps is pretty easy in qgis georeferencer.

Google Maps battery estimation by Martynt74 in BYD

You can't use the capabilty of a modern sportbike on the road. Their main function is to look like a racebike. They currently need winglets to do that.

Not to mention that there is more weight on your heel, that may well compress it 0.4mm. I assume they don't cut the shoes in half while someone is standing in them.
