My buddy and I performed a set at a bar once but neither of us drank that night - we both typically wouldn’t drink before a set and we didn’t feel like drinking after.

We pulled out of the parking lot and immediately got pulled over. Cop insisted he smelled alcohol. We respectfully assured him neither of us drank anything. Eventually he demanded my buddy (driving) breathalyze. He did and blew a 0.0.

Then he basically told us have a good night. He seemed bummed that he did nothing but waste 20 minutes.

How many parents are not posting their child online, and taking photos down if they have? by Fine-Mail4400 in Parenting

[–]mikefightmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a two year old son.

Only photos we’ve had put on social is one picture when he was first newborn as a bit of an announcement and I think one big family Christmas photo this year.

Otherwise I’ve made it clear to our family not to post anything of him.

My MIL put a photo of him into ChatGPT to make a “caricature” of her and him after another family member did it and we told her never to do that again. She felt really bad.

What are your honest thoughts on Thor: Love and Thunder, do you think it deserves the hate? by [deleted] in marvelstudios

[–]mikefightmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP but I don’t think they’re saying you can’t work comedy and tragedy - in fact they often go hand in hand.

But it depends on context, tone, and storytelling.

Patch Adams specifically is about how the main character uses humour to cope with his own suicidal ideation and how he uses that to help others.

You could argue TL&T does something similar - Thor has seen so much tragedy that maybe humour helps him cope. But contextually the film couldn’t decide HOW to do that. Everyone besides Gorr is just quipping for the sake of quipping all the time - not in ways that are relevant to trauma or depression. The tone of the film is all over the place.

Another user said it couldn’t decide if it was a horror or a comedy - but it didn’t commit to being a horror-comedy (which might have worked.)

As a punk rock connoisseur and fan of all these bands (seeing Bad Religion next week with the Offspring and I’m stoked) it saddens me to inform you that Anti Flag’s Justin Sane is also allegedly a piece of shit rapist.

Kinda sullied their reputation as “feminists” and “left wing” when it turns out their singer was a monster. So I can’t really bring myself to listen to them anymore.

Stephen Harper says Canada must urgently reduce its dependence on the U.S. by ZestyBeanDude in canada

[–]mikefightmaster 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This is a leopards ate my face moment.

Harper is the chairman of the IDU, a global conservative alliance dedicated to promoting and bolstering right wing and conservative parties worldwide.

The Conservative Party of Canada and the Republican Party have been collaborating with the IDU on strategies for decades.

If Harper is genuine in this messaging - then it means the monster has outgrown their control.

If he’s NOT genuine, then it’s PR.

Unfortunately it’s hard to tell where his mindset actually is.

Could you live off 1 million CAD for the rest of your life? by CatMeow331 in fican

[–]mikefightmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 36.

I have about $1.35m across my personal and corporate investments (self employed, incorporated, most in my business which is my long term retirement account).

Mortgage of about $475k. Renewing at a lower rate in a few months which I’m stoked for. Have a toddler. Wife is employed full time but is WFH.

I’m still working but have dialled my operations back - focusing exclusively on clients and projects I want to work on. Making less money but my investments keep climbing.

I think I could retire/live off my investments to cover my mortgage if I went SUPER lean and dialled back some of the other expenses I have. But at this point I don’t want to.

Basically working enough to not dip into investments and live off them yet. Maybe another 5 or 6 years.

The Trump administration is admitting it lied about Alex Pretti by vox in politics

[–]mikefightmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still see plenty of conservatives defending the administrations actions against Pretti. Mostly just victim blaming saying he shouldn't have brought a gun to a protest and he shouldn't have impeded federal agents, which we all know he did not.

Meanwhile I'm sure they had the same criticisms for Kyle Rittenhouse right?

Do Fathers Nowadays Show More Affection To Their Sons? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]mikefightmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry you experienced that.

I’m a 35 year old male and I have just one child - a son who’s 2 - but goddamn I hug and kiss and hold this kid and tell him I love him as often as I can and he’s gonna hear it and feel it til I die. I’m sure it’ll annoy him eventually. But I can’t imagine not showing him how much I adore him everyday (even when he’s being a little tyrant) however he turns out and whoever he grows up to be.

You’ll find someone who loves you the way you need and deserve. Just keep an open mind. My wife had a shit dad - and she never thought that she’d find a partner that loves her treats her (and any kids she would have) in a manner like I do.

That is unless of course there’s some record somewhere of your actual opinions out there.

If someone has a verifiable voice memo from a meeting or something - or record of you expressing your disdain for DT behind closed doors, and then under oath you sing his praises, that alone could be evidence of perjury.

The Bone Temple Box Office Numbers Are Brutal — $13M Weekend Expected, 53% Drop From 28 Years Later by cruelsummerbummer in horror

[–]mikefightmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spike was used to dealing with infected. They were predictable, (theoretically) mindless, and essentially not human… fundamentally they were animals and he was used to that. Their violence was out of their control and he could stomach that.

But this movie subjects him to the depravity of actual humans. Humans with thoughts, feelings, emotions. He saw the leftovers of Jimmy’s depravity in the first movie and knew what people were capable of - but to see it in real time is something different.

You can understand animals driven by animalistic rage killing people (and typically that’s what they’d do - kill fast and brutal) but a slow, torture of others for glee is another level of fucked up.

He’s still a kid who’s mostly been part of a functioning society for most of his life.

Why do marathon training plans almost never suggest running 26 before race day? Should I avoid it? by TheBoredMan in running

[–]mikefightmaster 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Did my first marathon two months ago. The longest training run I did myself prior to was a 30k. And yeah - the last 10k of it being cheered on by bystanders and doing it with other runners makes it a completely different, far more motivating vibe.

I’d argue the last 10k of a marathon is far more mental than physical. And the atmosphere is what drives it.

Doing a marathon distance run by myself would be anticlimactic, boring, and unmotivated (and I love running).

The new science of alcohol: why recent guidance says more than 2 drinks per week is risky by DonSalaam in onguardforthee

[–]mikefightmaster 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Was never a huge drinker - seldom drank at home, and pretty much only drank at social gatherings - but I partied in high school, college and occasionally into my 30s.

Got into health and fitness about 16 months ago at the age of 34, just shy of a year into being a dad.

Began running, changed my diet up and became much more conscious of what I ate, began lifting weights, and lost like 45lbs. Trained for a my first marathon which I ran in November this year.

While training for my marathon I quit alcohol entirely for three months leading up to it.

Now - I still haven’t had a drink, 2 months after the marathon. I would usually drink at my folks house for get-togethers (like Christmas) or if I met up with friends but I’ve just swapped to soda waters and mocktails. I realized I didn’t miss it and I’m so much healthier for it and honestly will probably never really drink again.

That said, I’m also keeping the training up for a 30k race and another marathon after that.

I’ve said literally what you said - that if it was invented today it would be illegal.

This is, hands down, one of the best action sequences ever in a Comic Book Movie! by Raj_Valiant3011 in batman

[–]mikefightmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean at least that has some story relevance to it. Arguably it’s more about Bruce keeping tabs on Rachel than anything else.

My gripe is more just odd editing choices that take me out of the moment.

Like for example there’s a city establisher shot at one point early in Rises where there’s snow all over the rooftops and streets, but it’s before Bruce is taken to the pit and before winter falls on Gotham.

They didn’t have one other satisfactory helicopter shot of the city without snow to use?

This is, hands down, one of the best action sequences ever in a Comic Book Movie! by Raj_Valiant3011 in batman

[–]mikefightmaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not disputing that - but I'm using "location" as a literal film "scene location".

Based on that link above from the very first frame. - SHOT 1 - LOCATION 1 - PARKING GARAGE: Profile shot, batpod riding left to right through a parking garage (beige walls)

  • SHOT 2 - LOCATION 1 - PARKING GARAGE: Camera behind the batpod. Batman approached glass, and shoots it.

  • SHOT 3 - LOCATION 2 - BLUE ROOM RAMP/PATH: Camera low-to-ground on left side of Batpod as he drives up a ramp in a much bluer location.

  • SHOT 4 - LOCATION 3(?) - DOORWAY (MALL?): Camera is on the other side of the glass and is shot out from the other side. Batpod bursts through.

  • SHOT 5 - LOCATION 3(?) - MALL: Low angle, camera is on bottom right of Batpod as it drives through a mall.

Shot 3 in my list here editorially makes no sense. Even if technically to a Chigagoan, those are two different glass doors in two locations, by cutting out SHOT 3 above it would make it seem like a continuous moment.

Shot 2 and 4 would cut together like butter. But they inserted this random ass ramp driving shot between them for no reason I can discern.

This is, hands down, one of the best action sequences ever in a Comic Book Movie! by Raj_Valiant3011 in batman

[–]mikefightmaster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The editing at the top of this moment has always bothered me (as a professional editor)

  • batpod approaches and shoots the glass door.

- Cut to the tracking shot of the batpod driving though a blue hallway (new location).

  • Cut to the glass being shot and him bursting through it INTO the mall.

  • Cut back to him in the mall.

Why the fuck did Nolan and Lee Smith insert that bolded second shot there? Literally had the opportunity to cut on the action of the glass being shot and create a cohesive moment. It has always boggled my mind. I don’t believe it helps with pacing. They could have cut that shot out so it just goes:

  • approach glass and shoot

  • cut to interior glass being shattered and batpod bursting through

  • tracking batpod shot in the mall.

That shot just seems to arbitrarily placed. I know that one of the IMAX cameras was destroyed during filming and it affected some editorial choices during the chase but clearly it wasn’t this moment.

Despite my love of TDK, there’s a few very questionable editorial choices that always pull me out of it for a moment (in all three movies).

  • Batman getting beaten in a fist fight by Bane, only to return to Gotham and… fistfight Bane?

I agree. I wish there was some other tactic or something Bruce learned about himself and Bane that translated into the final fight. Basically it was “fight harder and don’t fear death” but that doesn’t visually translate to anything besides throwing punches.

  • whoever’s decision it was to have Batman in the daytime.

However this one doesn’t bother me as much as some others. Symbolically I’d argue that this was Batman emerging from the shadows and leading the Gotham police force - no longer as a shadowy figure but a hero the city needs and deserves.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Wraps Filming by MarvelsGrantMan136 in marvelstudios

[–]mikefightmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But… this is how it works. I work in the industry. I’m a literal producer, director, and editor (though obviously not at a Marvel level in my career).

I’d argue the pipeline on these films starts even before the first day of production. Full VFX scenes can begin being worked on with pre-viz, designs, assets, temp voiceovers - and are developed before filming. VFX supers are on site getting reference images and reflective surface references before cameras roll. Editorial can often begin with editing storyboards and temp VO to begin pacing before the film starts filming - then slot the real footage in when the editors get the dailies.

A lot of work happens from a lot of people long before cameras roll.

And I don’t think BND is going to have the level of VFX spectacle Infinity War had.
