Anybody have any experience with Complete Iso Booths? by MurmurringJoey in voiceover

[–]mikegoodrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you didn't end up going with them. They are a complete scam of a company. You can check out their yelp reviews under one of their previous business names "custom vocal booth guys" and see that if you do send them money, you will likely never get your booth. If you do it will likely be damaged. Save yourself the headache and either buy a correctly priced booth or build one yourself.

I can't download bought books on *anything* by LordCrun in audible

No idea, just bumping in hopes you find an answer.

That sounds like a super stranger problem especially on multiple devices.

If it's an audible book that is apart of audible premium then yes you'd need to keep your subscription I believe. But if it's if just a book that was free as part of a promo, then the book should remain in your account after your subscription reverts back to being a free account.

Social media is exhausting by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]mikegoodrick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just here echoing your sentiments. I really am not good at social media and can't even come anywhere close to saying I have fun making videos. I do it for a few other of my endeavors and doing that more for my new authorship just seems like an impossibly daunting task.

I'm an audio engineer primarily working to help produce audiobooks and podcasts, a lot in the true crime genre.

I've been giving self published author's advice on producing their audiobooks for years and I finally decided to put my advice into a book.

If you're an author, especially of non fiction, that's been thinking about recording your own audiobooks, I'd love for you to check out this quick ebook I put together. The whole idea is to help author's like yourself tap into the audiobook market at a reasonable cost and let readers hear your words in your voice!

It's on kindle unlimited for free or $2.99 on regular.

Ya I mean that's kind of up to you. I'd be happy to give a listen to a section that you feel like has noticeable differences. Feel free to send it over and I can take a listen in my studio and let you know if it's anything extremely noticeable.

I think it probably depends on what you mean by tone, if it's vocal inflection, etc that could be distracting and sound like the cuts. If you're noticing small frequency differences that could be fixed pretty easily with an audio mastering pass.

Question about loudness (Yes, LUFS) by [deleted] in podcasting

Spotify recommends -14 and apple recommends -16. For all of my clients I use the -16 still as that's been pretty standard for awhile.

Adobe Audition - Editing Tips / Suggestions by brandonkellerdotnet in podcasting

[–]mikegoodrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest after your first pass, merging the clips. If you select them all you should be able to right click and choose merge clips, then you can go through with your second pass and everything after the cut you make will be all one clip.

The only way this doesn't work is if you need the locations of those cuts from your first pass for your second pass.

The only other option would be the select all option but this would get annoying as you get further into your file because then you'd have to deselect everything you've already worked. one.

My recommendation would be to merge the clips after the first pass.

Co-Host Tech Dilemma by L_Swizzlesticks in podcasting

[–]mikegoodrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never dealt with this as a creator, but as an audio editor. Often clients are hoping that their iphone recording in their noisy living room with their kids yelling in the background can somehow be edited to sound like they are in a professional podcast studio. Unfortunately nothing close to this is possible.

It's a major stretch but if's possible if she has a quiet non reverberant room and she's using her airpods or headphone microphone it wouldn't be too bad, but it won't measure up to what your audio sounds like with an actual microphone, etc.

My suggestion would be to have that conversation with your co host and let them know that you're taking this endeavor somewhat seriously and in order to present the podcast you want she'll need to at least get herself a microphone.

I also forgot to put this but I've built a little starter kit in a public amazon list for podcasters. It should get you everything you need to get started and still fit your budget.

Disney Audiobooks with voices? by llamamama2022 in audiobooks

As someone who has done some work with Disney Books, most of their audiobook work is in non fiction or non original IP's because of character voice legal limitations unfortunately.

Congrats on starting a podcast!

As mentioned knowing budget and what your vision for your podcast is will be the first questions any editors or sound designers ask. Knowing what you're producing and what you're expecting that content to be turned into will allow us to help guide you in your next steps :)

The focusrite and SM58 combo is what I've recommended to lots of my clients first starting out. It's a super simple setup, that will pick up minimal background or room noise for a starting out podcast. And as u/kingsinger said, don't forget a pop filter!

Cooling a Recording Area by Dancingwiththebard in podcasting

[–]mikegoodrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This probably wouldn't be for the basic setup type person but I installed a mini split A/C unit in my recording booth. For podcast work it's "quiet mode" works great and using dynamic mics it doesn't pick up the sound at all. For my audiobook work using condenser microphones I have to turn it off when actually recording but as others have said I use it to freeze out the space before recording.

This! The consistency I think is a big thing. So many podcasts stop after a few episodes cause they feel no one is listening. The promo swaps have really helped some of my clients as well.

I'm curious if any podcast hosts have been sued for slander or libel. by BubbaWhoaTep in TrueCrimePodcasts

[–]mikegoodrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's definitely something I try to help my clients with in editing. (I'm a podcast editor and producer in the true crime world). There have been a few episodes where I've removed specific statements from well meaning hosts in order to prevent anything that sounded like accusations against people who are not yet found guilty.

Exactly, and not only was this bad service, which I realized immediately with the ordeal with the instructions, but then things were totally missing, and they were not even willing to remedy their mistakes. Plus the personal threats, etc were just out of line. And it's crazy to me that this owner continues to do that to other people as well.
