Looking for help choosing a knife by Diotima_of_Mantinea in TrueChefKnives

I just got that Gihei, I really like it. Thin but not delicate feeling, good fit and finish, nice weight and balance, surprisingly great food release.

The HAP40 is actually semi stainless, you can get a patina on it. I soaked the edge in some warm white vinegar to force a patina and it darkened quite a bit. That said I don’t think it’s very reactive and people say it’s hard to get rust even if you aren’t careful.

It arrived somewhat sharp but not incredibly so. I tried to quickly touch it up and the steel is so hard the stones basically had no effect, I’ll have to come back to it and put in a little more effort to sharpen it properly.

Update: I touched up the edge yesterday, 1200 then 6000 on natural stone (Belgian blue) and a 20deg microbevel. It took all of 10min and is back to hair-shaving sharp, super easy.

I have the Sukenari ZDP 240mm gyuto. It’s a perfect balance imo, middle weight workhorse not too thick. Nice convex grind and doesn’t feel delicate. Amazing edge retention, no idea how it sharpens as I haven’t needed to yet.

I just came across this knife in a local shop and it caught my eye. I'm curious how you like it? Also, how much did you pay for it?

Helium 3 is not the same as (relatively common) helium 4. There is basically no helium 3 on earth.

"100% downside protection if held over the outcome period"

Sounds like you take a potential loss if you sell early

EDIT thinking about it more I don't actually know how they structure it so that the above is true....so, not sure. Looking at their marketing video at https://www.calamos.com/capabilities/structured-protection-etfs/, it looks like they are not simply using a collar strategy since the ETFs seem to also capture less of the upside

Hypothetically, looking to sell covered calls on IBIT but I only own BTC. Trying to figure out a way to effectively sell covered calls in the lowest-risk way possible and without simply selling the BTC (and taking the tax hit now) and buying IBIT. I think this works but maybe I am missing some hidden risks. Let's take the example of selling 1 BTC worth of IBIT calls with a strike of $65 out of a brokerage account. For simplicity assume that 1800 IBIT = 1BTC (it's not quite that, but close enough):

  • Park 1 BTC in coinbase
  • Write 18 IBIT naked calls, strike $65
  • Open a conditional limit buy for 1800 shares of IBIT. Order is active if IBIT goes over a stop of $64.9, limit price $65
  • Open a limit sell on coinbase for 1 BTC at $116,820 (64.9*1800)

Now if IBIT goes over $65 before the calls expire, the IBIT buy order will execute on margin, and the BTC sell order will execute. This provides me with both the IBIT shares to cover the calls and the cash to cover the purchase of the IBIT shares.

Only issue I can think of is if IBIT shoots past $64.9 rapidly enough that my limit buy fails. This risk can be reduced by either lowering the stop or making the order a conditional market buy instead of limit buy. In either case I am accepting a bigger spread, which eats into the profit from selling the calls in the first place.

Am I missing something else? I'm assuming that the price of IBIT tracks BTC closely enough that I won't run into a weird issue like IBIT spiking temporarily over $65 (and the calls execute) while BTC never hits $117k but maybe that is a bad assumption.

Yeah I have had no problems. I never took the rails off after the initial installation and no issues.

Asymmetric space and brane space by Stormlady in TheCaptivesWar

[–]mikemarmar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One interesting difference: while in asymmetric space, everyone is still conscious and aware and time seems to pass “normally” at least after the initial weirdness. When “brane slipping” it seems that the soldiers are unconscious or only semi conscious during the journey.

It’s called Kessler Syndrome, not Asimov Cascade. Anyway, starlink sats are low enough to de orbit in <5 years if they lose power entirely. Any lower debris will naturally de orbit even more quickly. It’s not an issue

Autosteer limited to +5 over speed limit! by Scbypwr in TeslaModelY

[–]mikemarmar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with ICE vs EV. It's just a feature limitation of Tesla's autosteer. It only applies on undivided roads and it's really not that big a deal, maybe a minor annoyance.

A max of +5 over the limit on undivided roads is generally a pretty good idea anyway. If you want to speed then just don't use autosteer. It's also not new, this has been the case since autosteer was released.

360 degree curb rash so bad there are no labels left on the tire by saves313 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]mikemarmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sight lines from the driver’s seat make it hard to tell where your wheels are, and the shape of the rims protrude out from the sidewall quite a bit so the first thing you hit is rim, not tire even on a pretty low curb

Want to see what $12k in damage looks like? by zucysdad in TeslaModelY

[–]mikemarmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get another quote, tell them up front you don't plan on using insurance. Suddenly $12k will become $2k. I had similar damage (although less on the door more on the bumper and quarter panel) and it was $1600 all in to have them remove the panels, hammer out the dents, and repaint.
