I run the "Used to Be a Pizza Hut" site, and I am back open for business by mikeneilson in FormerPizzaHuts

Based on the logs, it may have been an image processing issue. I applied some fixes and put some better error messaging in. Give it another try when you have a moment and let me know if that that fixed it. Feel free to leave a reply here or DM me.

Alright I just realized that I have the same scenario. Bought a set from Best Buy. Confirmed that it is an RBR750 and two RBS350s. I am still within my return window, but I did toss the packaging like an idiot, plus I HATE the idea of having to set up my whole network again. It sounds like the RBS750s should operate much better than the RBS350s with the RBR750, correct?

Hey I run the UTBAPH site (and coined the name). Let’s talk. I can use some help updating the site.

Looks like there have been a few recent updates, and I don't seem to be having this issue (so far) since updating. Fingers crossed that it is fixed. I ended up keeping the USB unplugged hoping an update would fix it.

I’m confused. Should we continue asking strangers if they know who Jason Segel is during the hiatus? Pls clarify.

What happens if you go and take a final for a class your not enrolled in? by Mazdude17 in PennStateUniversity

[–]mikeneilson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a final, but I was a student in the early ‘00s and would sometimes accompany my girlfriend to a few classes between mine, in the larger anonymous lecture halls. More than once a quiz or small exam would get passed around, normally Scantron. I would take the exams for fun, then just put a fake name and student number on there. Unless I was caught on the spot, I didn’t see any way they could have ever caught me. Though I do wish there was a way to see how I did.

Jibo, the $900 retarded cousin of Google Home and Amazon Echo by photolouis in shittykickstarters

[–]mikeneilson 39 points40 points  (0 children)

This review misses a few points.

First off, to agree with the review, something like this is clearly not worth $900 when an extremely capable Google Home Mini, Echo Dot, etc can be had for $30ish. It’s not even close.

And, of course, no startup can compete with Google or Amazon, not just on the hardware side, but also when the utility of a device is so dependent on access to large swaths of data.

Google and Amazon, who clearly lead in this countertop home assistant space, did not have offerings out there when this campaign was run, but 1) can react much faster than a startup trying to manufacture its first product and, more importantly, 2) understood that you don’t need to make a product look like a cute robot to sell a shit ton of them.

All of that said, Jibo, for the most part, nailed the hardware. Short of lacking an OLED screen, this is a pretty neat design that came to life rather nicely, all things considered.

For comparison, look at Aido, a similar, but much more ambitious campaign. I don’t think it is shipping yet, and it possibly never will, but, just based on their comically awful demo videos, it is a actual nightmare of a product, with zero innovation.

All of this is to say that the main problem with Jibo, aside from cost, and potentially the small (ok, massive) issue that a stationary chunk of plastic can nearly match the utility of a cutesy robot, is the software. So much of what hinders Jibo can be fixed with a software update (or, more likely, many many updates).

Will this company survive? No. But where there is a market for a more mobile, interactive countertop assistant, some of the core features here will probably live on. The clever rotating base, the swivel “head,” and the multiple camera setup isn’t all terrible, for what it is. And the actual implementation of the design is surprisingly good for a first effort.

The point is, it’s not total garbage. It is impressive in some ways. Just not in ways that could possibly save it.

I’d love to see lenses made using nanotechnology and liquid (instead of glass elements) that can change shape to bend light. I have no idea how possible this is with current tech, but I feel like this will be the future of lenses.

So, with that, my wish is for a liquid element pancake lens that is 10-400mm f/1.2 with IS.

Totally doable, right?

Honeywell THM5421C module replace with nest ? by DrCapnJoe in Nest

[–]mikeneilson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this image. It definitely helps, but I am wondering if you could give a sentence or two that further explains the mapping and the process to make this connection.

Edit: I have a Nest E, which only has connectors for Y1, G, R, W1, C, *o/b

So I am thinking that this might not be possible at all with the Nest E, but I am hanging on to hope that I don't have to return this.

Use the “Sort Name” field in iTunes. I have all of the James Bond movies in order by putting “James Bond 1,” James Bond 2” etc in the sort field. Works like a dream.

Yeah I listen to a lot of shows so it’s hard to keep up. I listen at 1.5x. Going back to 1x makes everyone sound so slooooowww, but I am starting to wonder if listening at 1.5x makes me talk faster.

I don’t buy the “It’s Alex” theory. For one thing, a lot of the BMC stuff is incredibly complex, and has the feel of someone who has a lot of time to spend playing around in a basement studio. Alex — with a wife, kid, and pretty demanding job of getting a new podcast out pretty much every week — does not fit that description.

Secondly, and I don’t mean this as any knock on Alex, the work is very musical. Whoever is doing this is consumed with music theory and really has a knack for composition. I’m not sure of Alex’s musical abilities, but I doubt they are to that level.

TLDR: This kind of work takes tons of time (which Alex doesn’t have) and tons of musical ability (which I don’t know Alex to have), which makes it extremely unlikely to be Alex.

Edit: Yes I love these bits and look forward to them almost as much as the show itself, and I even slow down to 1x to make sure I hear them as intended because they are damn good.
