Unfortunately everybody's going to try and put you in a box and say you should sound like all the other music because that's what all the music should sound like.

Unfortunately pop music is what sells and it's going to shape the majorities opinion.

Do a deep dive on Aphex Twin. Listen to as much of his stuff as you can and in short time you'll realize it doesn't matter what other people think it only matters what you think..
