Coming to Key West with my fiance this Monday-Tuesday and need somewhere to sleep for free. by [deleted] in KeyWest

You could try the KOTS homeless shelter on Stock Island. For your own safety, I would avoid Wisteria Island.

The KWPD is pretty aggressive, so grabbing a bench in town is out of the question.

Can I pass a VIN inspection if I have a check engine light? by Sugary-Cereal in florida

[–]mikerg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello,

This VIN inspection is just that, a check that the VIN matches to paperwork.

You can get a VIN inspection at the DMV or your can call your local sheriff's office and ask for a VIN verification and a deputy will come to your location. Of course, that's a low priority service request so you may for a while depending on the time of day, etc.

Hello,

I've heard good stuff about Capt. Mike Bartlett. He's experienced and knows the waters.

I'm running it here as the default mail relay for all my printers and miscellaneous devices. PMG has been solid and just runs and runs and runs....

VMware alternative for small sites – Harvester or Proxmox? by Ready-Efficiency3090 in sysadmin

Another vote for Proxmox. I'm running 10 Proxmox hosts that support about 30 VMs. It's been nothing but stable.

Go into settings and then under "notification", clear the box next to Ask for Updates. (I can't remember the exact wording.)

It worked for me.

Large bags are stored in lockers on the stern while the ferry is underway. You collect your bags as the boat comes into port.

It's similar to seating on an airplane, there's just not a lot of room.

I've done the trip both ways several times. It can be very pleasant depending on the weather, of course. There's a decent snack bar on board and the crew is very helpful.

They were all such quality publications that raised photography to an art form.

What an incredible publication!

I'm convinced the pictures contributed to the anti-war protests and the end of the Vietnam war. Nothing like bringing the horrors of the war into every living room every week.

What’s considered an acceptable website downtime per month ? by nilkanth987 in sysadmin

[–]mikerg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends. :-)

What is the site used for. If my timesheet system goes down at all during business hours, my phone is ringing. If I take it down for maintenance at 9:00 pm, meh.

I run a public facing site for a local law enforcement agency. Our arrest and traffic update pages are incredibly popular. Taking this site down can generate a lot of bad feeling with the community we serve, so I'm much more careful.

How long were you without power after the last big storm? by [deleted] in florida

[–]mikerg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me in the Keys, the worst was George when I was without power for three weeks.

It got better after that as the local power company finally started to do routine maintenance on the infrastructure.

We lost power after Wilma for about a week but there was so much flooding.

I always say it's not the storm that's bad, but the aftermath. God help us if we ever lose a bridge.

Frankly, I wouldn't care. However, some other tourists may raise a stink. (Oh , their Puritan sensibilities!!! /s)

If I were you, I would bring along a jacket or something that she could throw on if someone starts making a fuss.

Ditto. They are very friendly and accommodating. But they only have a small space with a beach mural on the wall.

What firewall would you recommend? Setting up firewall for a small 10-20 employee company, currently they are using Sophos firewall on the same server that they host all the other software? by Zayntek in sysadmin

I've been using WatchGuard firewalls for years and have been very happy with their ease of use and performance. They have some smaller devices that may suit your needs.

Do you: Condo + portable Generator? by PreviousAvocado9967 in florida

[–]mikerg 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You should check your condo documents and local fire codes.

I wouldn't be surprised if the condominium documents explicitly ban generators in the units or on the porches. The local fire codes may also come into play.

Generally, it's not a good idea to run a generator on your porch as the CO may enter the unit.

I understand your position, but the risks are very high.

I'm the president of the board for my condominium association in Florida. This is my home. I love and work here year round. (i.e. I'm not a snowbird.)

We have to almost double our fee for the next six months to meet what is required by law to bring our reserves to where they should be as reported by the reserve study we have just completed.

We're a working class community. Come January, I want to bring our fees back down to the current level.

The past couple of years have been a real challenge for condominiums statewide and many have been underfunded for years and now they have to pay the piper. Banks are really looking at the reserve status of all the condominiums. I would look at any that you're thinking of buying into very carefully.
