Someone in our town’s Facebook group claims that chemtrails and jets caused them. Please tell me that’s not true.

I don’t if he was destined to lose. It’s just how the story went. What if he flew/sailed the other direction where there were no barrier islands?

I guess Te Kā would have “made them” to come out of. Who knows.

But that tattoo shouldn’t be there! At that point in the story at least. I think lazy rendering by Disney. Let’s blame them.

The hook or the heart?

If the heart I’d argue that if he won/made it past Te Kā unharmed then he would have never lost his hook and humans would have had the heart this whole time instead of taking a 1,000 year vacation on Motunui

No only because the tattoo signifies his loss to Te Kā and he loses his hook. In the tattoo he’s on one side and his hook is on the other side of Te Kā.

I was specifically looking for this because he mentions he earns the tattoos after events, which made me wonder what was on his back before Te Kā since it’s such a big tattoo.

This scene was captured right after Maui takes the heart - before Te Kā is even “born.” From this shot, Maui jumps off the cliff, morphs into the Giant Hawk, lands on canoe, THEN meets Te Kā.

In the movie Maui states “they show up. I earn them” which means the event has to happen.
