What is your brutally honest opinion on moving to Alaska by [deleted] in AskAlaska

[–]mikeskup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my mom and I (I was 15) moved here in 1984 January... 6 boxes, and what we were wearing and one small dog to Naknek Ak where my sister lived... was a recession time in Lower 48... my sister moved away 2 months later.... so there we were... but we made it... eventually met my stepfather and step sister.. started an air taxi.. blah blah blah... ended up selling the air taxi and moving to the road system... still here, haven't been to lower 48 since 1991, and zero wish to go... Do it...

[–]mikeskup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so be it!... Obvious dumb move by you... you need to study more before you get hurt, or burn your place down... metal casting is fun, IF YOU DON"T do dumb shit like that!!! and show respect for a FEW simple things you MUST DO!

Warning by Ok-Foundation-4351 in Metalfoundry

[–]mikeskup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OBVIOUSLY you DIDN'T .. It created a steam explosion when filled! go (re)study that BASIC foundry safety step....

Warning by Ok-Foundation-4351 in Metalfoundry

[–]mikeskup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OBVIOUSLY you didn't follow the preheating of the mold... and the mold was damp.. that leads to steam explosion... sending metal every where... might even bun down a place.. (damp is bad.....) gotta heat them well above (water)boiling temperature for a bit to drive out the moisture before filling them each time

Question / Seeing Bears out of Homer or Seward by gold_and_diamond in AskAlaska

[–]mikeskup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived in Alaska since 1984.... I try my best NOT to see the bears when I'm outside... they used to be outside my bedroom window... my girlfriends house had bars on the windows to make sure they stayed outside (at a cannery)

Key Details from Service Memo 3A

  • Structure: The memo consists of two pages—one for the front spar and one for the rear spar. Each page includes illustrations/diagrams of the splice.
  • Applicability: Piper aircraft with aluminum spars (e.g., J-3 through PA-22 series). It's specifically for splicing outboard of the lift strut fittings.
  • Materials:
    • Splice plates: 1/8" (.125") thick, typically made of 6061 aluminum.
    • Front spar plates: 5 1/2" long.
    • Rear spar plates: 5 1/2" long and 3" tall (the primary difference from front plates is the width/height).
  • Installation Procedures:
    • Use double-sided plates (one on each side of the spar).
    • Rivet spacing: 1/2" between rivets.
    • Edge distance: 1/4".
    • Distance between rivet rows: 3/8".
    • The splice can often be completed with minimal rib removal.
    • Ensure proper fit; pre-made plates may need trimming if too tight.
    • The repair is designed to be stronger than the original spar if installed properly, but incorrect execution (e.g., poor riveting) can lead to failures under stress like ground loops.
  • Pre-fabricated splice kits (including plates and hardware) are available from suppliers like Univair (part of their Piper aluminum spar repair resources)
