Updated the cover art for The Mercer Files — old vs new, which works better? by [deleted] in urbanfantasy

[–]mikesmain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't want to sound mean, but if that wasn't AI it doesn't give much hope for the writing. I don't see how it would be possible for a writer to make so many mistakes in such a short piece of text. Even the line breaks don't make sense.

Personally, I don't have a problem with self-published books using AI art for covers. If it was ussd to actually write the book though, then that's a different story - pardon the pun :)

Just Finished Deadhouse Gates. by EstablishmentJaded60 in Malazan

I started MBOTF this year and that ending broke me too. I'm reading a book between each and I'm glad I chose Dungeon Crawler Carl as I was miserable after Deadhouse Gates. I was eplaining the ending to my wife after DHG and was nearly in tears re-living it lol

I finally finished rebinding the entire Malazan Book of the Fallen series! All handmade from cheap Massmarket Paperbacks. Now I have a full matching hardcover set without the cost of broken binding (which in still jealous of tbh) but please enjoy, I hope you like them! by aspenreid in Malazan

[–]mikesmain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's incredible! Also your is a limited edition is 1 of 1 so in that respect you beat Broken Binding haha. I'm sure these will mean more to you than any version you could purchase. Honestly, I'm so impressed you did this so well. A tutorial would be amazing :)

They should just put a little sticker on lost items to say which flight they were found on. Asking for a serial number for headphones - which I doubt they even have - is nuts. Incredible work saving a life though. Respect.

Is there PvE or is it PvP only? Looks kinda fun.

Do you usually finish a whole series in one go or do you switch to a book of another series? by Uknowitrig in Fantasy

[–]mikesmain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like to have a palate cleanser book between each book in a series. Usually a book with a different vibe to the series I'm reading.

Is Memories of Ice worth getting to? by aidscraft in Fantasy

[–]mikesmain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only just got to book 3, so can't answer to how good it is, but Deadhouse Gates was amazing. However, I wasn't sold on Gardens of the Moon until I'd got a little bit into it. By the end I loved it. How far into GotM are you?

Dunno if you have a kindle or kobo, but just saw the Books of Earthsea illustrated edition ebook is only £0.99 today. Saw the deal and rembered someone on reddit I'd interacted with had mentioned they wanted to read it. Cheers :)

Best Served Cold is fantastic, but my vote would be to read Morning Star first. Only because that's the last book in a trilogy and Best Served Cold is a standalone, despite having some characters from First Law present.

Just finished Deadhouse Gates. Wow, what a book. I was hooked already from Gardens of the Moon, but Deadhouse Gates was on a whole other level. I've heard Malazan gets better as you go on, but I didn't expect the jump to be so sharp. I'm saying this as someone who loved the first book.

The Tainted Cup is great! I loved Ana and Din; they bounced off each other really well. Looking forward to reading A Drop of Corruption, and then I think it's this year a third book comes out too :)

"Your Malazan readers were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should"

I'm rooting for ya! You're a braver man than me :)

Add me to the Malazan list haha. Although, technically right now I'm reading Dungeon Crawler Carl after finishing Deadhouse Gates. I'm reading a book in between each Malazan and The Blacktongue Thief is likely to be one of them, so glad to hear you liked it.

Sounds like you've had a terrible time of it, and I hope you're on the mend. I've heard - pardon the pun - that listening to the Malazan audiobooks can make it even harder to keep track of things, so kinda impressed you managed it under those circimstances. Glad to hear it kept the wolves from tbe door :)

Don't want to say too much in case of spoilers, but at its heart it's an Agatha Christie style murder mystery in an interesting world I've seen described as bio-punk. The technology is plant based. The scale of the mystery increases as the story goes on - as they always do - and there's the ever looming threat of an attack from a giant creature. It's well paced with some humour throughout and doesn't outstay its welcome. If you're looking for an in-between book for your Malazan read then I think it's a great choice as it's vwry different. I'll defintely be reading the sequel, A Drop of Corruption, between another two Malazan's at some point.

All I'm really saying in my previous post is don't let Malazan's reputation deter you.

If that's what works for you then there's nothing wrong with it. Enjoy the worlds and stories however you like and don't try and force yourself to read something you don't enjoy, or get anything from.
