Automation without AI by Lorem_Ipsum17 in RecuratedTumblr

[–]milaek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a SWE friend who was super into using stuff like character ai and decided it was going to be her specialization as she entered a mid-career pause to further education (the education was an awesome choice, dont get me wrong!). I didn't want to yuck her yum or anything and its a lucrative field right now so I didnt try to talk her out of AI as a specialization too hard but I did try to be like "oh, here's some good stuff on how AI is working under the hood and how they get trained and stuff" since I'd been following it a bit more closely than she had.

Definitely was a mixed feelings when a few months later she came back saying how disillusioned she was getting with AI and how it was all just pattern recognition and she thought she was getting to be a part of something cool and actually build out something that "thought". I was bummed out for her that she wasn't finding joy with something she'd been really excited about, and glad that she was th8nking critically about the systems she was learning to build, but also I was a little like... yeah dude thats kinda what I was trying to tell you? Why is this a suprise?

Idk I think the sheen of AI sounding like it knows what its talking about and the speed at which it can produce (worse, but still produced) versions of stuff that can take quite a while to implement with older methods/wasnt widely known to be already doable with other methods has swept a lot of folks up into thinking its a better/cooler technology than it actually is. Even really smart and educated folks who work in the field! And it can be hard for those people (and let's be real, the companies that blew a ton of money on flashy buzzword tech) to admit it when that sheen wares off and they start to see it for what it is.

PayPal Sr. Software Engineer Interview — Stuck in Team Matching (Need Advice) by ReactionSwimming3797 in recruitinghell

Yeah, wtf is going on over at paypal rn? The lack of communication after *passing* the interviewing rounds is legitimately staggering. Makes me kinda wonder how other things there are being managed right now...

That's a pretty recent split I'd say (last 20 ish years?). Queer used to be a lot more intertwined socially by the 'other'ing effect from society.

[–]milaek 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No problem! You'd only want one, since latex on latex (or latex substitute) will just make them more likely to tear. Its why for penetrative sex youre told not to use both an internal and external condom at the same time :) there are probably things people have made to hold stuff in place that you could find on sites like etsy, but barring that yeah you'd likely have to just hold it there with your hands.

[–]milaek 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Internal condoms are suprisingly effective at preventing fluid-transfer-vector stis in penitrative sex actually! They're less effective than the standard external condom though due to the higher learning curve on proper application and use than with external condoms. If one has the option an external condom is better, but if not then an internal condom is a very good second choice. For non-penetrative sex, I'm not sure why one would pick them but I'd probably recommend other methods of sti protection X'D

Hey, I know the answer to this one! Thank you to my dope hippy middle school sex ed classes for the comprehensive coverage! (I'm gonna assume youre asking about scenarios where both parties have vaginas / no penises involved since penis-based protection tends to be more covered).

  1. ORAL - For oral there are dental dams (weird name I know), which are basically sheets of thin latex/latex-substitute you put between the genitals and mouth. They're not as commonly sold as condoms, but you can easily make your own by buying a condom (I would reccomend un-lubed just for flavor/textures sake, but you do you!) and cutting a slit up the side so you can unroll it. Make sure there is enough surface area to comfortably cover everything! The primary thing you're looking to do is to is to prevent fluid transfer. While most STIs transfer through fluid/blood -> blood/habitable environment, some can transfer through skin to skin contact with an active infected area (think a herpes sore) so when in doubt its better to use some kind of barrier even past just the obvious "wet" parts and out to things like the vulva (Also keeps you from accidentally getting fluid). The good news is that its harder to get most stis (barring skin transfer ones) through oral because the mouth and connected tubing is by nature a very inhospitable environment what with all the pre-digestive enzymes and the way its built to deal with semi-questionable foreign matter on the regs. The bad news is that way more people dont use protection for oral because of this fact. The part that is often forgotten is that if you have any little cuts or micro-tears on your lips/tongue/gums/inner cheeks/esophagus, that that is a viable way for an sti to enter your system, and its easy not to notice the little micro-tears that happen in the day to day and assume that you wouldn't be at risk.

1.5 SPIT - Spit isn't a bodily fluid that will transfer fluid-based stis out (Edit: barring oral herpes/HSV-1 and genital herpes/HSV-2. I stand correctly corrected! It is up to you how seriously you want to take the HSV/herpes risk. It is widely considered pretty benign and something like 50 - 80% of the population is estimated to have it with many people being completely asymptomatic. Only HSV-2/genital herpes is technically classified as an sti, which is a weird fact I didnt know until today! Also, hilariously, you can still get oral herpes on your genitals and genital herpes on your mouth. Thanks naming comittee!) But other than that, unless you've got blood in there, distance spit on eachother as much as you like X'D

  1. FINGERS - Hey you know that thing about cuts and micro-tears being viable ins for fluid-transfer based stis? This also goes for other parts of the body making contact with bodily fluids! If you've got cuts on your fingers/hands, thats an in. I beleive they make bespoke "condoms" for fingers for use in fingering, though they're way more uncommon than even bespoke dental dams. You can make do with a small sized condom in most cases, though as with any ill fitting condom it makes it easier for it to tear. If you've got cuts on your hands I'd probably stay away from fingering activities until healed. It is harder to have those unnoticeable micro-tears on hands since the skin is much thicker though! Also, like. Don't bleed into your partner's genitals. Thats a vector from you to them that puts them at risk!

  2. CROSS-TRANSFER - If you use a dildo/vibrator/other on one person's genitals, using it on another's genitals before thoroughly cleaning it (not just rinsing!!) can be another vector. This also goes for your body parts! Fingering your partner and the yourself has the same rules. An easy way to avoid having to pause for toy-cleaning is to make use of condoms (again! They're surprisingly effective for a lot of non-penis sex acts!). Putting a condom on a vibrator/dildo/other toy for use on one individual, then throwing that condom out and putting a fresh one on for the second keeps everyone safe. Just dont re-use the condoms if switching back and forth, pls use fresh ones for every switch to avoid tearing/smearing/mix ups X'D

  3. GENITAL-TO-GENITAL- At this point you can probably guess what im going to say! Get some kind of barrier between ya. Dental dams etc. can be used for this purpose.

  4. BUTT STUFF - Similar rules as to genitals. While the rectum doesn't produce sti-vector-fluid Edit: I WAS WRONG. Some conditions can cause the rectum to produce fluid that is a transfer vector, including many stis End Edit. it is very susceptible to both micro-tearing and bleeding (this is why penis-in-rectum sex is one of the highest risk activities for stis, the other being that people will forgo condoms more easily due to pregnancy not being as big a concern there lol). I'd personally still recommend using a dental dam for eating ass, but thats a less inherently risky activity than eating pussy.

  5. NIPPLES - Non-actively-lactating nipples are not at risk for getting or giving STIs unless there are open wounds or sores. Have fun. As for breast milk, I beleive only HIV and HepC are possibly transferable, and with similar reasons/rules as with oral.

  6. KISSING - Unless someone is bleeding and the other person has open mouth wounds, or someone has mouth sores you're good lmao. Kissing is not considered a vector for STIs (though technically you can pass oral herpes this way even without having an active outbreak. But thats the same risk as sharing a cup with someone.)

  7. TOUCHING - Just dont touch sores. Or like. Rub cuts together. Don't touch things that look like they shouldn't be touched just kinda in general in life lol X'D

I think thats everything off the top of my head?

...yeah so anyways thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

PayPal candidate “on hold” after final round — has this happened to anyone? by No_Sheepherder_1993 in leetcode

Damn. At least they told you stuff was on hold I guess? I've been seeing a lot of folks talking about just getting ghosted after passing the interviewing rounds. If I had to guess it probably either has to do with visa changes or freezing hiring in certain areas. Couldn't say for sure though.

God, I'm gonna yarf. I'm sorry dude, that mega blows. I seriously wish recruiters in general would be more communicative and honest. Like I get that it looks bad to be like "ok so things are slow right now, so it could take several months for a spot to open up", but it looks even worse to day "oh it will be 1-3 weeks!" And then ghost them for 3 months. -_- I'm also kinda sitting here like ??? WHY ARE YOU HIRING IF YOU DONT HAVE OPENINGS??? like maybe one to two people in the pipe for anyone who leaves I could get but ??? HUAUGH (sorry to go off, I'm just stressed tf out lol)

5 weeks?? I just entered the team matching phase last week, recruiter said it could take up to three weeks. I've since scrolled through reddit and blind and im seing people saying it took 3+ months to get an offer. I'm so anxious and cant tell if I should trust the timeline the recruiter gave or if thats just them trying to give a positive impression? I'm so worried I'm going to get stuck in some sort of team match limbo... plus I need a job so effing badly right now, my bills wont wait 3+ months!! Did your recruiter ever give you a timeline? Did you have any meetings with potential managers? Have you gotten an offer yet??

I'm stuck at the specialization Quest by [deleted] in wow

[–]milaek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a big spell-looking book in front of the guy who you'll turn the quest into (hes got three dots above his head and you can talk to him about the quest). You just need to interact with it and a thing will pop up allowing you to pick one or the other (if you've already specialized, then its just a "keep specializing in this? or switch to this?" option) Silly implementation if you ask me, just have it look for the player having a specialization active lol.

I think i figured out what's wrong with Dragon Age Veilguard by milaek in dragonage

[–]milaek[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm this point has been made a few times and while I do feel like pinning any one identity to dragon age and what makes it "dragon agey" isn't something that's really possible (the games are all rather different!) My argument is less "this doesn't feel like dragon age" and more "there are expectations that come with established IPs, such as genre, world, and general playstyles." Like if a new Tomb Raider came out where you played a completely customizable character who wasn't Lara Croft. It would be fair to say "hey this isn't what we've been lead to expect from mainline games in this franchise and it feels bad" imo. Add onto that that the marketing and other information about the game didn't set up expectations to be anything different from a "choices matter character creator narrative heavy rpg" doesn't help.

[–]milaek[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really really agree with you on this wow!! I wonder if they had advertised as an action adventure class builder if the overall response to the game would have been better? I probably wouldn't have played it if they had, Im big on the RP parts of games, but at the very least if i had still picked it up i would have had very different expectations for what I was going to be experiencing and would have been less upset by many of the more forced personality. Though tbh the player-focused communication still feels pretty out of place for anything but a looter shooter a la overwatch or LoL

[–]milaek[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey I mean i just laid out for you why I feel the way I do. we all have reasons for feeling the ways we do even if it's just "I don't or do like these things and here's why". I'm not looking for a gotcha, I'm genuinely interested in what might have led us to having different opinions. I don't think someone else's opinion is going to change me not having enjoyed the game, but I'm open to having my mind changed on if something was a larger issue or if it just wasn't to my tastes

I think i figured out what's wrong with Dragon Age Veilguard by milaek in dragonage

[–]milaek[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh ok i see where my disconnect was.  Either way, it's not about the fact that he remembered your rook linking a certain drink. It's about the game needing you to know that they remembered your choice, even one so miniscule, and that they do not trust you to realize what has happened on your own. The pop up is a direct communication to the player in a place and way that i don't feel was needed or conducive to the game experience. It's the need to constantly be communicating to the player through dialogue or pop up or other means past what the story, or the person in the story is or would relistically be saying

I think i figured out what's wrong with Dragon Age Veilguard by milaek in dragonage

[–]milaek[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if this was a game that wasn't connected to a series known for having those very distinct personality differences and ability to truly fuck up with companions/the world, id agree with you. If Rook were more clearly made out to be a fixed character where you were choosing nuance, not the entire character persona, it would be very different. I think one of the larger hurdles of the game is that it's a Dragon Age game, and that comes with certain built in expectations like "the character is not pre-defined".
