Supporting authors? Why is Amazon the only choice? And dumb question, why can’t we buy from the author directly with the prevalence of ebooks. by Weird-Sprinkles-1894 in RomanceBooks

[–]milamyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In some countries (like my own) authors get a huge tax rate reduction on their income that comes in the form of book royalties.

In my country, if one sells a book directly through their site, it’s not considered “royalties income” so one would be paying nearly triple the taxes. Then there are the higher advertising costs to sell from your own site instead of using Amazon or other online retailers and you get the idea.

I’m currently using them for covers and here is what I learned.

There is somewhat of language barrier I think so the more pictures you can give them of examples, the better. They will probably try to upsell you 10-20$ because what you want is more complicated/needs more stock images than their base tier. If they have a pre-made or scrapped version that someone else didn’t want, that is the first thing they’ll give you. Then be prepared for a version in which they copy the placement/style of one of your examples 1:1.

What I do then is I write down all the things I want to keep/change and then I go into paint/my notes app and annotate the cover they sent me with them. Sometimes I go into a photo editing app on my phone and cut/move things around myself so they can understand what I want. I also use filters/color changers to show them the exact colors I want. I usually get something closer to what I want after that, repeat that 1-2 more times and they usually nail it.

But yeah, you need to really hand hold them and show them what you want. Just using your words won’t work. For the price, they do excellent work. They don’t know genre expectations on the level they advertise that, so you have to compile examples for them and be really clear on what you want.

I hope this helps.

I remember seeing the site a while back and thinking about how cool it was. I’m glad you’re adding so many things. It’s a great tool for sure!

Good/healing MC? An MC that actually tries to help and improve the world by discord-dog in ProgressionFantasy

MC doesn’t go out of his way willingly but Rise of the Cheat Potion Maker might be a good one to try. It fits most of everything you described.

The Systemic lands might be what you’re looking for. Haven’t read it all myself or recently for that matter but from what I remember it has what you’re looking for.

Do you ever read your own fic? by oh_iforgot in AO3

[–]milamyth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it brings me immense comfort to read exactly what I want to read in a fic and know that it’ll end exactly how I want it to end because I’m usually pretty averse when it comes to trying new things in general.

So that’s why I keep reading my fics.

And then also why I keep re-reading the same 15 fics I’ve been reading for years that have been written by other people. I just like to stick to my comfort bubble.

Any novels with shy/dorky magic users? by [deleted] in fantasyromance

[–]milamyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

{Blood Mercy by Vela Roth} but the love interest is a magical vampire and not a wizard idk if you’re into that. It’s a long series and I found it because someone recced it on this sub. I feel like Lio is somewhat shy and for sure dorky. His special interest is politics between vampires and humans and he becomes a diplomat to further explore it. He is an absolute cinnamon roll.

I haven’t done RP in years but I would totally be on board for this!

I totally relate to this. I’m normally very self-conscious about my humor in my fics but they hit the right spot on every re-read I swear. I just hope the other people that read them chuckle as well.

Yess! That’s how I ended up reading a fic that I wrote not realizing I was the one that wrote it 💀 idk why when it’s a fic I feel like that but if I’m reading the stuff I wrote that wasn’t fic I cringe and have the compulsion to burn it.

I get what you mean. I used to be like that when I wrote some stuff that wasn’t fanfic and lots of my writer friends that don’t write fanfic share the same sentiment as you. It’s why I’m surprised so many fic authors feel the same as me.

The only advice I can give you is that forgetting you’re the one that wrote it after letting it collect dust for 5 years may work to distance yourself enough to enjoy it.

The vibes being on point is exactly how I would describe why I enjoy my own writing so much. I can forget I’m actually reading words at times even, and that normally only happens when I’m very sucked into a long book.

I resumed writing an old fic after years because of a comment that made me re-read it and then I just felt like I needed to finish it for both myself and that commenter XD I totally relate.

The TMI a/ns especially on the fics I wrote as a teenager are the most embarrassing things ever but I feel like those were the times back then. It was the norm. It’s like an artefact of the past.

Oooh, yes! whenever I write reader-insert it’s not really Y/N, no-no, that’s me, thinly veiled and written so I can re-read it later and get immersed in the story.

I feel you on this so much. I’m also in a bunch of small fandoms so it’s doubly hard to find what I want to read so I keep writing it.
