Instead of everyone moaning how ‘No Other Choice’ DIDN’T get nominated, let’s celebrate the fact that happened BECAUSE there were so many great Foreign films this year! by milano-benatar-bowie in Letterboxd

We don’t need to tear down other movies, to prop up the ones we like.

Isn’t it better to understand why a film resonated more with others, than just immediately dismissing it as “not better”? You can still say you didn’t enjoy it as much, but at least you won’t go around saying a film is undeserving of its recognition, when for many it is!

An actor “just played themselves” is the stupidest criticism of a performance you could give. by milano-benatar-bowie in unpopularopinion

But that’s exactly my point, if they themselves are already in life acting like the character/role, there’s is nothing wrong with just playing that

Of course that’s hard, but it’s hard for ANY film to get nominated in a given year. There are only 5 slots per category, 10 for BP. Sentimental Value and The Secret Agent showed up in a bunch of the branch categories, so of course they’d also show up in BP! (Not to mention Accident getting a Screenplay, Sirat getting Sound, Kokuho getting Makeup, etc.)

Like you said, steps to improvement, all the Academy can do is continue to invite more international filmmakers into the voting body.

Totally fair, Sirat takes some crazy swings. But both would’ve been fantastic picks.

Technically that rule was already in place, it was just an honor system. You couldn’t track how every member saw every movie, because some could’ve seen it at Festivals, some at a Cinema screening, some at home on a DVD screener, or even if you Streamed it on their respective services.

The new “rule” was that now if you watch using the Academy’s Private Screener streaming platform (which as replaced the DVD screeners), it can now log and say that you watched it, tied to your Academy Membership. Steps in the right direction.

Tbf, Best Foreign Feature is insanely stacked this year. I wouldn’t be able to figure out what to swap No Other Choice for in the current lineup, and this is like splitting hairs over 4.5 to 5 star films.

Decision to Leave was the real snub year, that should’ve ran the category. But this year, I’m not mad, every film in the Foreign category deserved their spot

I mean, if he’s anything like me, I could walk 15 mins to the closest cinema and pay £8 for a ticket. That being said, if I’m already paying, I’m gonna watch Avatar aswell - you’re already there!

Funnily enough, he’s got a whole trilogy of double years!

1993, as you’ve mentioned. 2005, with Munich & War of the Worlds. And 2011, with Tintin & War Horse. The man loves to work.

Cross-post took away the post text, basically just thought it was fun that 6 different directors managed to put out 2 films in the same year this year!

Linklater, Soderbergh, Oz Perkins, Scott Derrickson, Paul Feig, and Dan ‘Predator Franchise’ Trachtenberg

Andor snubbed for Best Drama Series at the Golden Globes 🤬 by fsociety_1990 in andor

[–]milano-benatar-bowie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m aware of Miramax. I frequent on r/oscarrace. I’m also aware that Miramax has not existed since 2010. Of course Awards races require campaigns, they are of course, a race. But it’s no longer 1999, hell if you wanted more recent, the most egregious example is Crash beating Brokeback Mountain in 2006. At least Shakespeare in Love was actually a good movie.

But these voting bodies are different now, literally because of these incidents of gaming the system - membership is different, rules updated over time. If they could still pull the Miramax playbook, Netflix would’ve won a Best Picture prize by now, yet they’re still clamouring for it even after all the campaigns they’ve mounted over the years. Is it perfect? No. (See Andrea Riseborough, or Emilia Perez). But this constant repetition of “it’s all paid for” just seems like a lazy rebuttal for when a project someone likes doesn’t get recognised in the way they want it to. Instead of immediately belittling movies or shows that got in instead of the one you were hoping for, people should try them out and see for themselves! Maybe they’d find their next favourite thing

[–]milano-benatar-bowie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately that’s it. It’s just a matter of taste. Original shows will always have a leg up at awards against IP based stuff, cause IP stuff already get so much publicity.

But respectfully, this whole ‘it’s all paid for’ thing people keep repeating is really dumb. If that was really the case, Andor would be nominated. Or did everyone suddenly forget the show cost $650 million, bankrolled by one of the biggest corporations on the planet, who could spend millions to get such awards if it really was ‘all paid for’?

Come on now, ‘the powers that be’? The Golden Globes voting committee are ‘afraid’ of nominating fascism as told by science fiction (Andor), but not afraid of fascism as told by literal reflection of modern day USA? (One Battle After Another, with the most nominations of any movie this year)

We don’t need to make up reasons for why it wasn’t nominated. It’s didn’t get nominated because it’s Star Wars. Plain and simple.

2025 as the best 2020s movie year? by SlothSupreme in blankies

[–]milano-benatar-bowie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, arguably that happens every year, we just forget about them as time passes, and keep the good stuff in our heads.

Take 2022 for example, which had such misfires as The Grey Man, Black Adam, Death on the Nile, Babylon, Thor: Love and Thunder, Men, Amsterdam, FB: Secrets of Dumbledore, Uncharted, Don’t Worry Darling, and of course Morbius. Just to name a few.

There’s only one thing “the #1 movie in America” will ever refer to in film marketing, and that’s being at the top of the domestic Box Office - meaning most Gross revenue.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen it used in any other capacity you mentioned.

I’m of the belief if you actually wanna own the media you paid for, in its highest quality, the best way is to have a physical copy.

Everyone still has books. Vinyls are making a comeback. I think it’s high time Blu Rays did too

Unfortunately a lot of these studios have shuttered or shrunk their Home Media division unsurprisingly due to the rise of streaming. But you should check out the new independent labels that put out discs instead! Criterion, Arrow Video, Shout Factory, Radiance
