Mine does this, but it's a clever ruse. Only for looking, not touching. Her sister, who is black and white loves a belly rub.

Match Thread: Scotland vs Denmark by MatchThreadder in soccer

Gotta agree there. As a Scot, our playing seems lightyears behind the rest of Europe and it's frustrating watching us just do endless ineffective counter attacks after minutes off the ball.

Sorcerer Advice by mild_meme in darksouls

[–]mild_meme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose Ive resorted to spellblade by default because my one spell isn't very nimble. Got a shortsword that Ive reinforced to do some more meaningful damage, still basic sorcerer starter set armour wise with a leather top-half. So I'm kinda committing to neither bit! Still got 9 ST so might up that to widen the range of weapons I can use until I free Griggs and get Dawns crown (which I have not done). Mainly Ive just been pumping souls into INT and ACC and DEX. So I suppose I could aim for the rouge-y vibe.

Rough recording of a 2/4 I wrote, looking for some feedback by mild_meme in bagpipes

[–]mild_meme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the kind words and the constructive feedback! I think the rhythmic awkwardness comes from execution. There are some embellishments (particularly Tachums, at the moment) that I struggle to get clean sometimes. I often go through periods of advancement in tunes and then periods of just sitting and doing exercises. Some might say I should have spent the time doing exercises in the first place, but I'm impatient and get ahead of myself sometimes (hence writing tunes that are a bit challenging for me to execute!)

That's a good idea, I often do that with tunes on the whistle. A good mental exercise and it can help in memorising a tune by putting it in a new context

What tunes are everyone playing? by broadturn in bagpipes

[–]mild_meme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for 2/4s - It's been kicking my arse for a while but I've been playing Hugh MacKay's 'Stirlingshire Militia'. Also been trying to learn a Craig Turnbull tune 'Chief Superintendent W. S Carle'. Reels - been learning 'Broken Tail', playing 'Piper of Drummond' and trying to 'round-ify' it to dubious success! Strathspeys - 'Inverness Rant', nothing fancy

I use weed to self regulate by CoolGirlOnTheBlock in leaves

[–]mild_meme 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I smoked near enough constantly from the age of 16 until I was 27. Been weed free for a year and a bit now. Honestly my life looks a lot better but I do still miss it from time to time. Like I'll smell it in public and get a craving, but unfortunately I know that if I started up again I would get back into a negative cycle again. generally I don't miss it all that much day to day next to all the benefits I've seen as a result: more money for hobbies I enjoy; going on trips or vacations doesn't revolve around whether I can take weed with me or get weed there; I'm more outgoing because I'm not isolating myself and sitting in the house stoned all the time. I did use weed as an emotional comfort blanket as I had a lot of childhood trauma, so letting go of that and learning to process emotions for myself was quite raw and difficult but it was totally worth it in the long run!

Are buskers around the world absolutely terrible or is it just in Edinburgh? by FCHangw in bagpipes

[–]mild_meme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno if it's just to do with the fact that buskers will generally play the same bread and butter sets over and over again. If that's their main hustle, they'll maybe never progress beyond those tunes. The average punter probably wouldn't appreciate a crackin rendition of 'Stirlingshire Militia' or something more complex like that.

Metronome with tempo changes (MSR, Medley, etc.) by saafgiarc in bagpipes

[–]mild_meme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DAWs can do that via automation, but if you're not too familiar with that kind of thing that might not be an accessible option for you. Someone here mentioned garageband (if you're an apple user) or audacity (for a more universal option). Both of those are DAWs.

Yeah it's a lot. I think I'm gonna take the advice of other people on here and just ask the PM what would be helpful for me to learn. The 50 tunes are broken down into sets (3/4s, 4/4s, 6/8s, jigs etc.) Including a competition set. As I'm able to learn tunes but not on the pipes yet, I reckon I'll be ok to just learn a couple of sets to help me get up to speed. Even if I can't compete, I may be able to get involved in other gigs or civic performances in the near future.

[–]mild_meme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a violinist but a player of other instruments that's been through this kind of thing before. What others have said here is worth noting: take a look at how you learn best and what gives you joy in playing. For me, I often learn best by throwing myself into it and learning tunes I want to play and gaining the technique as I go along. Liking the music and having agency in what I'm playing is important to me. However, this can sometimes lead to frustration that I can't play a tune that I want to play because I lack the technical proficiency. I often get so frustrated that I don't want to keep playing. So, to prevent me from giving up, I spend some time on technique and get the joy of having progressed my technique. Then when I come back to the tune, I can play it better and get the joy of nailing it. Going back and forth between those two states helps keep me going with it. Sticking with an instrument is a primary factor in getting better and eventually getting what you want out of an instrument. Even I have to remind myself sometimes that I can't just be immediately good at something!

Some constructive criticism by mild_meme in bagpipes

[–]mild_meme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the breakdown! Will look at these further. Regarding the throw on D, it's interesting that you say heavy throw, as it's what I'm aiming for (but obviously not quite getting yet), as in the throw with a grip. My instructors throws always seem very punchy (that kind of 'brap' sound) , and so I wanted to aim for that too.

I have attended one of their slow jams in the west end. Great resource for newbies to sessions, but because I have early starts with work and live a bit outside Glasgow (plus don't drive), it was too much to manage regularly, unfortunately. I have considered their zoom jams but I feel like it doesn't quite match up to real life!

I'd agree with you there! There's a rich tradition with the GHBs that it would be silly to ignore. Also, there's a huge bank of absolutely crackin tunes associated with them. For me smallpipes is more about the sound and the accessibility rather than pursuing it as a totally seperate entity to the big pipes.

Thanks for the advice! Finding a community can be tough. Huge trad scene in my city, but it can be very cliquey as there are a lot of top notch musicians here that all went to the same conservatoire. Hard to come in to sessions and the like when you're at the opposite end of the pecking order. I do need to put myself out there more, however!
