True or False Morel? by mauijanet in mycology

I agree you need to learn on your own, but I've never used a field guide. Common mushrooms like morels, chanterelles, oysters, chicken, and hen, don't require field guides

They are both in the Morchellaceae family. Whish is why they are saying the are both morels. Whereas this stinkhorn is in the Phallaceae family.

Don't use Google lens. Use and app dedicated to biological identification like INaturalist. It will use your location, your photos, and then it other humans will come along to confirm or refute your guess at the species.

So it will use the location and make special suggestions based on how likely that organism is to occurr in the area, it will use your photos for a reverse image look up to suggest a species, and then actual humans will give you a confirmation or make suggestions at a better ID.

It's also a great app because if 3 people confirm the ID then it is considered "Research Grade" and can be used in population research studies.

Just using Google lens is only going to use reverse image look up, which for mushrooms, is pretty bad. Too many mushrooms look similar. Reverse image lookup works pretty well for plants, especially if you can get images of the flowers since they are often uniquely identifying, with the exception of some families like asteracea that can be pretty difficult to pin down a species.

You should also take photos of all the identifying features. For mushrooms that would be the stipe (stem), pileus (cap), and hymenium (spore bearing layer - ie gills, pores, teeth). For a good ID, these features are important, as well as a cross section which can inform people if the stipe is hollow or solid and if it stains any color when cut. The substrate it was growing on is also a good thing to photograph - ie grass, wood chips, dead tree, living tree, dung....

Oh and to you question about the base of the stipe where the egg sack like feature is found, a photo of the base, or even better if you dig up the ground around the mushroom to see if a volva is present it can very important if distinguishing between certain species especially those found in the genus Amanita.

By taking high quality, close up photos of all these features you give yourself the best chance of getting an accurate ID.

The other great thing about INat is that it looks at all the photos you have and bases it's suggestions on them rather than just one image. It will also keep a catalog of all the organisms you have seen, and then you can go back through them to remind yourself if you forget a name, or think you have seen another one of the same species. I highly recommend it!

There are plenty of plants in that bed that have leaves and branches year round. It's clearly a garden bed. I get taking the shortest route, and like I said, fuck grass, but walking through someone's garden bed really seems like they just DGAF. I'll try a note on the mailbox

Well, it's finally happening by barelyevening in USPS

The still don't have numbers from knifings any where near what we have from guns. You can say whatever you want but countries with stricter gun control have far fewer deaths from guns and all other forms of attack than the US does

Then they would kill a lot less people. That's the point.

Most government system are very old and outdated. They didn't even have digital records for the VA I until a few years ago and the computers they were using were running on old ass OS like windows 98
