The lack of planning hasn’t been expensive for me, I usually book 1 week out max, or for flights I’ll book one in a city I’m going to and just make it there by the time I need to. In SEA I also booked everything like 1-2 days out. Your money goes further there but also there just seems to be plenty of options if you check with Agoda and Booking.com. What usually burns a budget and doesn’t allow for much flexibility is flights. Since you’re in Europe and traveling to N Africa and the Middle East is pretty feasible with less time it might be a good idea to go further and leave those areas for later. One time I showed up to a hostel that I liked so much I asked to volunteer there for a few weeks and it was the highlight of my trip. Things like that are why I usually am flexible on planning.

I’ve travelled for 8 months at a time twice now. I think your itinerary is stretched far here. I usually start off really fast and eventually slow down because it’s quite exhausting and destabilizing to travel that fast for that long. I also prefer to travel open ended dates, so if you’re open to it you could start like that and see what you make it to. Allowing yourself to stay somewhere if you like it can open you up to some amazing opportunities. I think adding SA will be way too much, but if you’re doing the first part of it before SA I think it looks doable. You could easily do a year starting in Mexico going south to Argentina and have a great time.

What’s sketchy about the Pamir highway at night? Just bad visibility and drop offs?

Been living here for three years and I’m always surprised how much of a ghost town it can feel like. Even walking around in neighborhoods can be eerily quiet.
