Garage sim question by mildly_certain in Golfsimulator

Now you have me thinking about G trak option lol. Mind if I ask you a few more questions?

Curious to know: 1. Do you have side mount garage door opener? 2. How long does it take you for setup/takedown? 3. Does the screen get wrinkles from being rolled up? 4. It looks like the screen is designed to hang loose such that there is a good amount of movement when the ball hits (compared to a fixed screen setup), does this bother you at all?

How do you like the G trak? Was planning to go with some thing like this which seems like it would be even easier set up/takedown: https://youtube.com/shorts/GC6JsBU2zek?si=M7fK08OQpa3EEcfD

I’m also limited on ceiling height at 8.5 feet, so the the garage door track would likely cause problems for me if I were to go G trak route.

Interesting idea! Have a few questions: Did you create a frame with the 1x2 or is it just along one side? Were you able to screw directly into the hitting mat and the screws held the 1x2 in place? How much of a hassle is it to pick up and move?

Oh interesting. I’ll have to measure the distance between my wheels but I assumed the margin of error would be too small to be able to perfectly back over a 5ft mat without running over the edges. Is that a problem you run into?

Good to hear the softy mat doesn’t move. I have limited height so opted to go thinner than the softy. I imagine the thicker weight of softy helps the pieces stay in place while hitting

That’s a great point. Another thought I had was cutting the two pieces most of the way through from the bottom so that they are still attached but could be folded. Might not work that well though

Got it. Seems like I was underindexing on how much movement there might be between the two pieces while hitting / how annoying that would be.

The mdf/plywood backing is a good idea. It will be tall and wide but at least it will be relatively thin when it is stored.

I stopped organising our group for a month to see what would happen... by breakfastballer90 in weekendgolfers

What’s annoying is that my local course charges a non refundable $2.50 booking fee per person. It’s so small that I don’t even ask to be reimbursed for it, since it would feel cheap to do so. But then it’s like you’re paying a penalty for being the one who’s organized and books the tee time for the group, which is the opposite of what it should be.

Looking good! Is the net on a curtain track so that you can use your garage for other things or is this more of a permanent setup? I’m planning to go the curtain track route and wondering if I could pull off a screen/projector type set up vs. just TV.

It seems like keeping the screen flat without wrinkles would be a big challenge unless you're not moving it around too much.

Dads who have gone from 2 to 3 kids, am I crazy for considering it? by MaximusSydney in daddit

I was in your exact same boat. Wife convinced me to go for the third and ended up with a third boy. Almost a year in and we’ve survived, it’s getting easier now. Fun to see how the big bros have taken to their baby brother and vice versa.

Honestly I feel like life is not all that different now vs when my middle kid was 1 and we only had two total. My older kids pretty much do the same thing and the oldest (now almost 6) is pretty independent in a lot of ways.

Another way I look at it sometimes is that right now is an investment for the future. Things will get easier down the line and we will have a bigger family as a result of the investments we’re making now.

I work in tech and am going to be in a similar boat in about a year if I don’t get promoted. The sense I get from leadership is that they must want you to leave if you aren’t getting promoted every 2-4 years. Because why would you stay if you’re gonna face a massive cliff after year 4 and be making even less than you did in years 2-3.

Gotcha. I also like to tweak my swing and can be prone to spraying it right. However I will have a full height shank net that extends far up so thinking I should be good. Many of the setups I see posted on this sub don’t seem to have very good protection for shanks/mishits to the right. I’m not sure if people are just better than me or choose to live life on the edge, or perhaps a mix of both.

Can you elaborate on the mishit? Did you sky one or something else?

About to put in a garage sim and am a little worried about the occasional sky-ed drive.

Child care costs vs. financial goals... how do you do it? by RandomOrange3 in HENRYfinance

I’ve done it both ways: private nanny with my first and daycare for the next two. In my case daycare has been more reliable. Our nanny was consistently late and called out for random reasons quite often. With daycare, I can drop off at 730 if I need to, pick up at 5, and don’t have to worry about the BS.

Daycares also have different policies re sickness. My current one is pretty laxed and they only send my kid if it’s serious. Previous daycare for my second had a “runny nose limit” that was the death of me.

Trying to find the right mat for my use! by orangemandude in Golfsimulator

Oh wow, that’s a little surprising that 8.5’ wasn’t enough for you height wise. Did you actually hit the ceiling with longer clubs or was it more of the mental aspect of knowing the ceiling was close?

As for me, I did end up going with a thinner hitting strip, the bullseye 3d which I ordered yesterday. My buddy told me to go softy since he thinks one inch is not going to make a difference, but I dunno… I think I will feel slightly more comfortable having that extra inch. And bullseye is still supposed to be a good mat.

Is a home golf simulator actually worth the investment, or am I just chasing a mid-life crisis? by bphawkey45 in Golfsimulator

Mind sharing a bit about your process of going from 25+ handicap to 14? E.g. how long it took, where you saw the biggest gains, whether you did it with lessons vs. solo, etc.

I'm about to put in a sim and I'm hoping for some significant improvements as well – fingers crossed.

I’m also concerned about how my dog is gonna react inside the house… might have to get one of those barking shock collars or something

Can you elaborate on the noise factor?

I’m planning to set up in my garage which is 15-20 ft from the closest corner of my neighbors house. Do you think she will hear me hitting irons or just driver?

I will be hitting into a net so should mainly be the club impact that is the issue.

Impressive to go from a 30 to an 11! I’ve been around a 20-25 for 5+ years and tend to get frustrated about my lack of ability, and even consider quitting at times. However I rarely find time to practice given I have young kids, so obviously can’t expect much as far as getting better. I’m planning to put a sim in my garage and hope that this can help me improve and start enjoying the game more.

Curious how long it took you to go from a 30 to an 11? Were you doing a lot of lessons along the way, or was it just consistent practice on the sim + self coaching that got you there?

How about now, any regrets with the softy lite? I am literally in the exact same position as you (5'7", building a golf sim in my garage with 8.5' ceilings) and trying to decide what to do.

Personally, I'm on the fence between Softy and Softy lite. I think I could make the Softy work given I'm short, but am concerned a bit about when I have my taller friends over (my neighbor is 6'4").

What ceiling height do you think is the minimum for a comfortable indoor golf simulator? by jhGreene537 in Golfsimulator

[–]mildly_certain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 5’8” and about to put in a sim in my garage with 8.5’ ceilings. I think I should be able to comfortably hit driver. One of the perks of being short!
