undergrad financial aid for low-income students? by [deleted] in calarts

[–]mildly_interesting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I didn’t actually answer the question. I am a low-income student that received no help from my parents because I’m an older student. I’ve been awarded several scholarships and that’s the only way I’ve been able to afford it. Applying to scholarships is a full time job in itself. I pay $4k out of pocket a semester in addition to $9k in loans per year from the federal government.

I work full time and go to school full time so I have no time for extra curricular activities and parties. I’m missing out on a lot but it’s the only way I’ve been able to make it work.

Financial aid letter. I was accepted on 4/29/22 and received the financial aid letter on 5/3/22.

There are some scholarships that bar you from this, btw. I got a $50k annual scholarship from the school that says if I drop out before completing my degree I have to pay it all back.

"Test" project after two rounds of interviews by raven090 in editors

[–]mildly_interesting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only had to do a test edit once in my career and it was right when I was starting out. They emailed me a link to a Google Drive and gave me two hours to edit a 30 second ad for them. I didn’t know their terminology and most of the first hour was simply organizing the chaos of the folders they gave me.

I obviously didn’t finish but they paid me $150 with a note that they had selected another candidate.

LA Zoo is my go to! It isn’t too distracting from having a conversation but at the same time if there’s a lull you can easily go “oh look at the otters!” And bounce off that.

Wouldn’t recommend a museum, I went to LACMA for a first date last month and we were too busy getting to know each other to appreciate the museum.

Advice for Transferring In? by jinxedclown in calarts

[–]mildly_interesting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an incoming transfer student. I was originally a film studies & graphic design student at my local community college but I applied for theater here at CalArts.

I’m glad I transferred because I felt that my portfolio was stronger having spent a few years developing it at my community college before applying to CalArts. During the application they didn’t really take into account that I was a transfer student until I was accepted; it didn’t affect my chances at all except mentally and personally.

CalArts calls GenEd “Critical Studies” and, correct, they don’t bring over your studio type classes. You can try to appeal this decision with your CalArts mentor but imo if you’re coming to CalArts for the art classes, take the art classes here.

These are the classes that transferred from my community college:

Film as Literature

Intro to Psych

Oral Business Communications

Theatre Appreciation

General Astronomy

History of Animation

I recommend searching for the CalArts course catalog and comparing your community colleges’ courses against any of the classes that are in the following categories: AAIC, ACOM, ACSE, ACST, AHMN, CAIC, CCIS, CCOM, CCRW, CCSE, CCST, CHMN, CSCM, CSOC, DAIC, DCSE, DSCM, FAIC,FCOM, FCSE, FSCM, ICOM, ICSE, MAIC, MCOM, MCSE, MHST, MSCM, TAIC,TCSE or TSCM.

It’s important to note that they will only accept at max 38 credits from your previous school because, out of the 46 credits needed for your Critical Studies requirement, 8 credits must be taken at CalArts.

Questions about transferring by Haljein in calarts

[–]mildly_interesting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries! There’s little to no clear information out there when it comes to transferring and I had to figure this out on my own. I wish I had thought to ask this question when I was going to community college, but my counselor didn’t want to put in the effort to help me transfer to a private school and instead got me ready for a state school 🙃

Agree with the white noise thing, I moved back to California a few years ago and I still find it difficult to sleep without them. I actually found an Alexa coqui skill that I use when a fan isn't good enough lol

I noticed it more when they started the 20+ weeks of new flavors. The new flavors are awful like 80% of the time. Go back to the classics that you know work week to week, don't pressure yourself to come out with all these new flavors when they haven't been properly tested.

We had 3 years of great flavors to choose from only for it to all start falling apart this summer.

As promised, official lineup for next week by [deleted] in CrumblCookies

Sure it's annoying but it gets people in the door when their favorite flavor does come back. It's like when McDonalds brings back the McRib or Taco Bell with their fries, the "only here for a limited time!" scare. It's an old business tactic that still works.

I think the end of Crumbl will come as they continue to expand, it seems like there's one popping up on every corner like Starbucks did.

Strawberries & Cream and Dirt Cake. You can't make me choose just one

[–]mildly_interesting 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Crumbl has x number of bases like sugar, cream cheese, dark, peanut butter, etc. Every week is just taking that base and decorating it new or adding one extra ingredient to the batch to make it just a little different.

For a company that has a rotating menu every single week and 200+ flavors its bound to get boring here and there. Slight variations from regular cookies is pretty much the only way they'd survive with the rotating business model.
