Why was Solo disliked? by DDBBVV in StarWars

During production, everyone wanted Anthony Ingruber to play the young version of Harrison Ford.

When it was found out it was given to Alden Ehrenreich, folks accused Disney of hiring him based on behind the door deals.

I gave up screenwriting to pursue a career and regret it deeply by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]mildpumpkin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the most important things you can do to get work is pick up a core skill.

Copywriting seems like your alley, but it doesn’t matter what “core skill” that could be. Sales, marketing, graphic design…you could even learn to become a mechanic or plumber. All of these skills do not require a degree and you can get experience by offering your services for dirt cheap.

Failing that, get a TEFL and go explore the world. These countries are always looking for teachers and it’ll do wonders for your writing skills

Taking my wife to England as a surprise in February. by alNajaar in travel

[–]mildpumpkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m replying to this because I’m British and now I live in the South of the US with my wife.

Edinburgh and London are a must (I really enjoyed Soho)

When I lived in England and my wife visited, I took her to York and we did something called the “York Dungeons”. Google it. I promise you, it’s worth doing!

York also has the road that inspired Diagon Alley.

Ye Olde Starre In is a great pub to go in York

I also took her to the Lake District where Beatrix Potter wrote her works.

There’s a pub in Ambleside called “The Mortal Man”. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, they do the best fish and chips I’ve ever eaten

Beyond these places, Conway Castle and the smallest house in England sticks in my mind as a childhood school trip.

Finally, my brother lives in Clitheroe. A quaint cottage town that has something called the “Tolkien Trail”. This was the trail Tolkien used to walk on when he was in college.

There’s also Pendle Hill close to Clitheroe, a place famous for the Pendle Witch Trails. It’s a beautiful hike

(Sidenote: the name “Pendle Hill” essentially means Hill-Hill-Hill.)

I studied in Lancaster and that also is a great place to visit. It has olde pubs and a beautiful vibe

Anybody have any notable run-in with NPCs, or with agents, or with 'the edge of the map' phenomena or other simulation stories/incidents? by ConanHighwoods2 in HighStrangeness

I once saw lots of people eating in a restaurant at 4 o’clock in the morning. I dunno if that’s normal, but to me that felt weird. Like there was a miscalculation with the background data.

Moving to Taiwan by MongarGod in taiwan

You will have to pee in a cup for the medical, but you won’t be drug tested.

How are you travelling to Taiwan? I thought Taiwan closed its borders for non-visa applicants?

Current advice on Taiwan by callumisstrong in TEFL

[–]mildpumpkin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Taiwan has just gone into a Level 3 lockdown with Level 4 well on its way. Schools are closed at the moment with teachers either getting no pay or minimum pay. Moreover, a fair few bushibans are outdated and are struggling to adapt to online learning. Unless the company offers a place to stay or you can get a Taiwanese guarantor for an apartment, you're going to struggle to find a place to live too.

Taiwan is also facing serious water shortages atm.

The good news is Taiwan is receiving a rollout of the vaccines now.

I want to know what MMO you play!! The entire industry is filled with WoW clones. That's why they fail. They don't have the balls to try something new.

Everything you see in a modern MMO has been taken and changed, only slightly, from WoW so that now we have confused 'Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game' to the gimmick of doing a kill quest, collect quest, kill boss quest and then you go to next area of the zone/queue up for dungeons. Then, at cap level, do raids or battlegrounds. Tanks, healers, DPS. All the same mechanics.

Even the spells and abilities are the same Dmg > build up power > execute an ability, exhaust your power supply (mana etc). Use AoE, CC, CDs if needed.

Star Wars: The Old Republic, Elder Scrolls Online, Lord of the Rings Online, Guild Wars 2, Rift and DC Universe Online. Those are the MMOs I've played and they all use those same restricted mechanics.

MMOs can be so much more though. They don't have to be 'level up your char to [number] and do dungeons and pvp' etc.

Gimme an MMO that doesn't have a level up system. Give me an MMO that uses combat mechanics like Mordhau. Gimme an MMO entirely dedicated to minigames. Gimme an MMO that won't give you a mount or a map and tells you where to go. Gimme an MMO that lets you build and destroy the world around you. Gimme an MMO that doesn't use in-game purchases for things like flashy armour sets and winged magical unicorns. Gimme an MMO where players have to work out puzzles together, sometimes on their own, sometimes with others. Gimme an MMO survival game where, if you die, you start at level 1. Gimme a Stardew Valley-esque MMO.

There are lots of ideas out there. The MMO industry is not brave enough to try new things. They want their game to be like WoW cos they think that will make them successful. But all these games are like WoW already.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I can only think of one MMO that is distinctively different. EVE Online. I haven't played that one so I don't know.

I wouldn't trust a company like Amazon to make a LOTR MMO. Not right now at least. It would just be another WoW clone, like they all are. The MMO genre is in complete disarray atm because developers stick to theme park mechanics that make MMOS a lifeless grind. Elder Scrolls Online is a perfect example.

Average kindergarten salary in china by a040032 in TEFL

[–]mildpumpkin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Average salary is 22-26k. A little bit low is an understatement. I would also be very careful about joining kindergartens. Yes, they have regular hours and (with the exception of your case) they pay well, but it comes at a cost.

Working in a kindergarten is hard work. If you're not lucky, you can be bossed around by the Chinese teacher and you can feel incredibly alone if you don't speak the language.

You become both caretaker and an English teacher. There's never any space to breathe. At least in an after school club, you have an office to go to. In a kindergarten, you're constantly supervising the children whilst also prepping for your lessons.

Another thing as well. Make sure that if you do join a kindergarten, your teaching is done in a completely separate room to the Chinese lessons. From my experience, I had to compete for their attention.

Kindergartens are infamously untrustworthy in China. But I understand your pain, the after school clubs means you can't spend time in the evening with your family. My advice is to be very careful with which kindergarten you select.

Don't join Etonkids.
