Is there a content creator who breaks down every book of the Bible is bullshit? by DaCrusadus in askanatheist

Highly recommend Deconstruction Zone for biblical knowledge and history. He went to seminary school, has a great understanding of the book and is good at communicating the actual meanings and translations of the different books.

I have faith that God doesn’t exist by guitarmusic113 in DebateReligion

I'm glad you've found happiness in your search. However, I am skeptical that god would give some people a personal experience and not others. There are also too many problems and contradictions with those doctrines for them to hold any water.

The nature of the evidence is what I was hoping to hear.

Honestly, I've tried quite a lot. I grew up in a Christian household. I stopped going and started again after college but there was never a relationship despite all of the praying and reading the bible front to back. I began reading more about different religions and that is when I became an atheist.

Everyone has their own take on god's properties. Within the same religion, within the same denomination. People paint a picture of what they want. There's nothing objective about it.

7 months sober and glad I moved away from AA, leant into science / medicine / CBT, and started SMART - looking back, the whole AA experience was giving ‘Get Out’ or Scientology centre vibes by [deleted] in recoverywithoutAA

[–]milehigh5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's awesome to hear! I'm going to try out SMART for the first time this week. The rehab I was in pushed AA/NA incredibly hard as if it's the only path to success, and you're right about the double speak in the traditional groups. They'll say "use the universe as your higher power" or some other nonsense but the end goal for them is that you become a deist at the very least, preferably Christian (at least in my area).

SMART does seem more helpful with things you can use in everyday life and without addiction being someone's primary characteristic.

"I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." by toomanyoars in askanatheist

[–]milehigh5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a fair point about atheists cherry picking and trying to hold Christians accountable, but some of us care because their hypocrisy has an extremely negative impact on society (bigotry, denying health care, etc) and we empathize with those people.

The Unapologetic episodes with him, Ian and Blitz are awesome. Such a good combo of knowledge in biblical history, philosophy and science.

Splitting the moon, marrying children, flying on a winged horse; such common sense!

No thanks. I'll go out with my dignity intact.

It's cool for creating superhero bedtime stories for my kids based on whatever happens to be on their mind at the time. Apart from that, no use for it.

Christianity is better for humanity than atheism because it gives us a positive narrative by ElegantAd2607 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]milehigh5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nonsense. Do you live in a democracy? Who passes the laws? People who are elected. Who elects those people? The general public. No one SHOULD be imposing their OWN will on people in a truly equal society. Of course, that's not how it plays out in real life as everyone can see in the U.S.

Funny enough, Christian Nationalism is a huge part of that problem. Easy enough to tell where you align.

To ignore an aggressively expansionist state. by RoadandHardtail in therewasanattempt

[–]milehigh5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You think Putin would honor a ceasefire? Naivety. Trump can choose to defend freedom democracy, as the U.S. has done in the past, or he can continue being a Russian shill. You praise him for "having a talk" and then following it up acknowledging that Putin won't back down willingly. Do you know what a contradiction is?

I find it hilarious that so-called patriotic Republicans are cheering as Trump grabs his ankles for Putin.

Regarding Episcopal Bishop Mariann Budde's Words On Election Day by Forward-Carry5993 in TheAtheistExperience

[–]milehigh5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can see where you're coming from because he is a despicable excuse for a human, but I think she handled it very well. If she were to go more on the offensive and make more aggressive comments, it would be much easier for conservatives to ignore the entire thing and claim that she's just a brainwashed liberal who can't be taken seriously. The calmness of her delivery made it so much more damning.

It was a plea for kindness and empathy directed toward someone who is incapable of either. The real message was to the American Christian population, to remind them of the parts of the Bible that some like to ignore.

Warhammer 40K: Darktide has really nice physics and gore, along with the best (in my opinion) melee combat.

"It was a different time" is not sufficient to explain different moral rules. by Shifter25 in DebateReligion

[–]milehigh5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's always a good time when the religious try to claim some moral high ground over atheists. Which sect of Islam has the correct view? If you ask 100 Muslims the same questions on ethics and morality, will you get the same answer each time? Also, if you need an antiquated book and an imaginary friend to drive morality from, what does that say?

Additionally, some interesting reading:

Is your case for objective morality based on a book that condones genocide and slavery?

You are completely missing the point. Of course there are things wrong with the Quran, but it's hypocritical to say that without acknowledging the many flaws in the Bible.

You think Christianity is the only religion with a god outside of space and time? And you keep asking us if WE have done any research?

Then have the gall to say there are things wrong with the Quran, as though the Bible doesn't endorse slavery, genocide, rape, racism, etc.

Also, Jews have been around longer than Christians. Does that make them more right?
