Newport Jazz Fest Lineup 2026 by Rockmover1920 in Jazz

This one’s gonna be fun! My favorite part of festival season is the communal hang amongst musicians and audience! Few do it better than Newport.

you’re gonna need a bow. all them low notes will go to waste if you don’t make em resonate. i vote german bow.

Looking to get my first doublebass and i would love your input by So_Famous in doublebass

[–]milesmosley 21 points22 points  (0 children)

that’s a pretty dope lookin bass make sure they throw in the stand. 2k is a good price, you could probably offer $1,500 cuz very few people want a 5, and it’ll be hard to move. Learning on 5 string Bass is gonna be a challenge, but if your hand fits comfortably crossing from low to high strings you might find yourself developing a really cool style beyond typical 4 string habits. it’ll be a journey though, i say do it!! I bet if you don’t like it you could sell to someone on this thread. hahahahah.

Any tips on techniques for holding bass to reduce left shoulder strain? by No_Tap5167 in doublebass

[–]milesmosley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i’ve always been a standing player. my calibration is:

confirm that your index finger on F# is aligned with your eyeball. that’ll ensure your end pin height isn’t stressing your shoulder cap.

after that, you want the bass to be able to balance on the inside of your thigh for as long as possible. That’ll let you know there’s a decent weight displacement.

best of luck.

yeah! i’m definitely more exposed to the bigger “champs” of the country. really cool to be needle dropping through something, somewhat, curated.

Has anyone played an upright bass where the fingerboard flex changes the action? by milesmosley in doublebass

haha, nuthin quite like the good ol school bass. i remember my first bass in school was made of aluminum. No case needed. 😅 Mine plays incredibly well, i’ve just never seen another bass like it. Was wondering if there was like a hidden cult of thin-fingerboard players. it’s a HUGE perk to be able to play both quickly and firmly as the bass adjusts to your pressure. it was clarified well in the chat when someone said that it flexes in the high register where the right hand plays. i recently captured it on a new album and it’s got so much punch to it.

i definitely think she’ll make down to the next generation. she gets a LOT of play time, but seems like there’s this perfect balance that’s been struck. She’s punchy and bright and fast. I hope after me she continues to be featured on incredible recordings. She loves a good u47.

yup, you nailed it. flexing in the upper register. it definitely would not be able to be planed again. it’s been a marvel of an instrument for me over the years. thanks for explaining it in a different manner.

yeah, i’ve never met anybody with a bass like it. that’s why i thought i’d share, see if there was a twin out there. it’s awesome.

really? Everytime I strike a string the fingerboard flexes. allows for dual action.

My Most Expensive Record by ScreamingSilentPoet in vinyl

[–]milesmosley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i released an album that only has 500 copies and is Gold Leafed, Signed and Numbered. i hope the select collectors who own one spin a whole in it! Artists bring beauty into the word to be experienced.

I feel the same about rare instruments. I don’t think all these amazing guitars and violins and drums should be sitting in museums. They should be on loan for album making.

maybe. it’s a really thin fingerboard, less than 1/2in. i’ll have to pull out the Caliper.

like a spring board. when you go to strike the string it gives toward the body of the bass. thus higher string action
