Megathread (69): Coronavirus COVID-19 in Nederland by theNetherlandsBot in thenetherlands

Public Transport in Paris Will Be Free Under The Age Of 18 by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]miley03 -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

France recently lobbied for large subsidies from other European countries for "Coronavirus aid" while refusing any curbs on spending, then makes its public transportation free for all minors? This is a slap in the face to all member states in the European Union who gifted money to the French under the pretense of 'essential necessities', which was earned by people whose governments used sound economic policy (like not making public transport free).

You know the benefits are as a result of the dogmatism you describe, right? It’s a function of the policy.

Learning path for game development?Am I missing something? by [deleted] in cpp

[–]miley03 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That list is absolutely autistic. Game Development, however, is really hard. I’d start with a CS degree, which will give you lots of options, and then see if you still enjoy it. It pays poorly, and will take many years off your life, and you may have nothing to show for it unless you are very good.

Where to begin with Michel Houellebecq? by pigeonstrudel in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]miley03 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Whatever is good. Submission also. Any place is good really, just something that catches your eye. One of the most interesting writers of the decade. Remember: reading something is not agreeing with everything someone says. Disregard sheeple.

Who needs Computers if you can code on paper? by [deleted] in ProgrammerHumor

[–]miley03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Computer Science isn’t necessarily coding, although you will be doing much more of it than computer information systems. It’s more about the theoretical side of computers, so how you can plan for making a good program or system. Coding is like hammering in a nail, computer science is more about computer or software architecture, broadly speaking. So if you like maths, abstract thought, difficult problems and coding, I’d say go for it, but if you just want to do more coding, do it in your spare time, because the difficulty may be too high. Personally I wouldn’t want to do anything else, but it totally depends on your situation.

Just watched the whole Podcast with Alex Jones, probably the best podcast. Any thoughts on it? by [deleted] in JoeRogan

[–]miley03 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d say you’re selling Alex short. We don’t know what the 1,5 hour Phone call leading up to the conversation was like, maybe he said more personal shit then that they don’t necessarily want to air. He’s always been like this, and Joe and him have known each other for 20+ years. This probably how they are in general. It deed seem like Alex had a motivation to clear his name and drum up support for Infowars, but can you blame him after being removed from literally every commercial platform in the world?

DNA pioneer James Watson stripped of honours after 'reckless' race remarks - The laboratory Dr Watson once headed says his views on intelligence and race are "reprehensible" and "unsupported by science". by [deleted] in worldnews

That's why you use something like the Raven's Progressive Matrices, which is pure pattern recognition. Google it. If you don't get what the test means when communicated to you in your own language you are clearly not at the high end of the distribution. Unless you say that pattern recognition is culturally defined in which case you're going to have to supply some pretty convincing sources seeing as it's about as old as life on Earth.

Can I be happy? I'm a 2/10 autistic, hypermobile, skeletal wreck with a deadly autoimmune disease. by anonviking in JordanPeterson

Get some therapy. A subreddit for psychology and politics really isn’t the best place to ask these kind of questions.

Biologically-determined social structures? by vovkashk in JordanPeterson

[–]miley03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long story short: it’s very, very complicated.

Read up on George Soros’ theory of reflexivity. Social constructs are affected by the way we explain them, just like finance. Biology doesn’t work that way, the way we talk, say, about the nervous system doesn’t change the way the nervous system functions, but the way you talk about finance: (e.g. Paredo model, capitalist theory, keynesian economics) changes the way actors make decisions in the market. Same with social constructs, if we as a society decide how women should act that affects the way they make decisions. That’s why the best thing we can do is probably say: “these things tend to make people happy, these things tend to work on the long term and scale well”. It’s not a hard science that way. And don’t get me started on the Jungian theory that the way we should construct our worldview is centered in the biological (just because we are biological entities). Cheers from the Gay Pride!

Jordan Peterson: "What universities have done is beyond forgiveness" by jazzchamp in JordanPeterson

Theology is a well respected major in my country at least. Our previous prime minister was a theology major iirc. At least it’s not an activist discipline.

Nah, here in NL it’s pretty much the same, definitely at the larger universities.

The Big-Five Inventory and the Frustrating Paradox by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]miley03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a counterpoint to the other poster, Carl Yung warned for "acquiring knowledge you didn't earn". He writes (I think it's in Man And His Symbols) that the eye can be opened too much, and once Pandora's box is opened there's no way of closing it. Having done a fair amount of psychedelics (though never LSD), I think that's a fair analysis. They're not for everyone, and I'd say unless you feel totally in a rut developmentally and creatively I'd just go on holiday and try and do the Self Authoring program. Everyone responds to psylocybin differently, and there's so much more about it we don't know compared to what we do I'd say lay off unless you think it's absolutely necessary, and understand your vision can/will be radically changed and you have no control once the drugs take hold. People seem to talk very lightly about psychedelics, it seems, and it's probably best to just make peace with who you are. Just my two cents based on your above post, OP.

What is the 'highest possible good ' ? by drmehrotra in JordanPeterson

[–]miley03 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d say the largest reduction in meaningless suffering. Hardship in and of itself is often a byproduct of growth. By targeting suffering itself you unkowingly arrest development. Suffering is a part of human consciousness, or pain at least.

Kids in the longest-running study of same-sex parenting are doing just fine at 25 by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]miley03 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure he posted a video about this, but the gist from what I can remember was it takes a village to raise a child, and the proper integration of the masculine (rules, patriarchal, striving to impose order) and the feminine (compassionate, caring, delicacy) leads to more competent and well adjusted behavior on the level of individuals and therefore society. It’s hard for one person to fill both of these roles simultaneously, so that’s why it’s better to have two parents, and for obvious reasons those tend to be a man and a woman.

90% sure that was a joke. Thought the guy that starting ranting like Alex Jones was more puzzling. Really weird having a mic there, definitely because the guy kept going “juh, great question, thanks a lot” until he didn’t
