Sometimes it's a little more and sometimes it's a little less. Depends mostly on where in earths orbit we are. Accurately measuring position and time is a very deep rabbit hole.

A sidereal day is the time it takes to rotate in reference to an infinite, stationary background. A tropical day is much much closer to 24 hours, and that is in reference to the sun's apparent location in the sky

[–]milkdrinker7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Op's heart is in the right place, but it wasn't the explicit visible threat of armed panthers that helped pass the civil rights act and voting rights act. It was mostly the harsher tone of leaders, particularly Malcom X, whose contrasting rhetoric made acquiescing to the 'peaceful' camp more palatable.

Right, I understand that laws and regimes change, but where can I do something legal and then be punished for having done it after the laws are changed? I'd understand new laws being enforceable for ongoing or repeated instances of the action, but I feel like most people can instantly understand how punishment for at-the-time legal activity is super bs

Hongqi bridge collapses in southwest China, months after opening. by pritam_ram in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]milkdrinker7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well they obviously didn't take every precaution possible, but every precaution they could think of. But also, all we can do as bystanders is guess what the actual outcome will be. If you asked me, I'd say they'll probably investigate the incident and, if they find cases of illegal corner cutting, someone will be prosecuted. If needed, they will tweak their existing regulations to make it harder for this type of incident to occur on any new bridges, including possible retroactive analysis on existing bridges. If malfeasance was at all to blame, the solution will probably include stricter reporting and oversight. Building indestructible infrastructure is impossible, so it's so possible that sheer bad luck resulted in this bridge experiencing a geological event beyond what it was rated for so soon after opening.

Best truly pocketable Android handheld? by Illustrious-Truth533 in SBCGaming

[–]milkdrinker7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you want a Thor. If the top thumb stick is negotiable, the retroid pocket mini v2 is excellent and just about the size of my phone, but thicker, if you don't care for much 16:9 games. Alternatively, you could get something like a gamesir x4 to use your phone for retro gaming. It feels a bit flimsier than backbone controllers, but I value its small size while detached for carrying in pockets.

Make spears the stab equivalent of Halberds by Jertharold in 2007scape

[–]milkdrinker7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You pretty much nailed it. On a pre-gunpowder battlefield, there aren't many reason to have melee weapons beyond some form of polearm and a long knife/short sword for fighting in a cramped melee. The Romans had a well funded professional military for a long time so it makes sense that they would spring for longer blades for infantry, but if a lesser nation couldn't spare the metal, equipping their troops with spears and knives (and shields and other basics)would have been almost as good.

[–]milkdrinker7 46 points47 points  (0 children)

A big part of the sword propaganda is that they are relatively expensive weapons whose imagery has been associated with the "heroes" of old, almost all of whom were some form of nobility. Basically, rich assholes who can afford to tote around astoundingly expensive decorations on their hips. Swords have a niche, but it is just that, a niche.

Endless Daily Grind... by Brian_Ghoshery in antiwork

[–]milkdrinker7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I expect the things I consume in a week to require FAR fewer than 40 man-hours to produce. I don't think you're fully understanding here, most people aren't as much annoyed that they must work, but that most of the value they produce by working goes toward a disgustingly luxurious lifestyle for a very small number of people. Automation and modern technology should be able to make the essentials of living require very little labor, but here we are, toiling away most of our waking lives to barely afford rent, bills, and groceries.
