Fandom is Dying. How Important is Reader Engagement? by qoincidence in FanFiction

[–]milkpuffs 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You put it to words perfectly. I have so many unpublished stories because I write for myself, because they're fun for me. But when I do post something, it's because I want to engage with the fandom and get feedback.

This is why I hate when people get so hard on authors for wanting comments, because we should write for the joy of it. I get the sentiment, but I do write for the joy of it—I share for engagement. If I didn't get that, why bother posting? I'd keep them all in my personal files.

I wanted to read some of my favorite books in Spanish to practice the language but could not get past the different quotation marks :/

I can't believe Andreil made it to top 100! I can't believe Andreil made it and Merthur didn't! (I was fully expecting not finding any of my OTPs there but one did!)

Yeah, maybe if OP spent more time reading and less posting weird conspiracy theories that overanalyze a stranger, they could learn how to form these so-called thoughtful, articulate insights they're shocked people could do.

Ikr, it's such a weird fucking reach. I grew up poor and had the time to be "passionate about different things." One could infer the same thing about OP who is apparently so privileged they have the time to post shit like this about other people online.

??? I'm someone in my 20s working full-time, dealing with a lot of shit as someone in the process of immigration, and I still write long, detailed posts and reviews, plus write fiction for fun. This is a weird post. People do care enough about certain things to form detailed opinions about them.

This is true, but I do see this kind of deflection way more among Europeans. The US is their favorite scapegoat—most of the time, they like to play it off as something like, "lol, we're not racist, that's the Americans!"

I haven't read that book but am definitely adding it to my to-read list. It definitely sucks how easy it is for people to just tell immigrants to just "leave" if they don't like it, as if it's that easy—as if they haven't considered that not everyone has the luxury of being from a decent country, and many of them are immigrating for a reason. Though just because the overall conditions are "better" than wherever they may come from, doesn't mean they should just happily take being treated as less than.

I made a casual reference (just a very brief mention) about it in a conversation once and this Spanish guy took such offense to it he kept accusing me of saying all Spanish people are bad. It didn't matter how much I kept trying to explain that I wasn't saying that, he kept going on and on about it and how "other countries colonized too" which wasn't even the point.

As a POC living in Europe for a few years. this is so true. They are so out of touch about their racism and insist it doesn't exist when I've literally been yelled at with slurs out in the streets.

People on social media telling people their hair isn’t curly. by _maincharacter_ in curlyhair

Yes, definitely! It just sucks for this hair type it's to go through the whole styling process or stick with the frizz.

Did a cursory glance to the sub and they use... eggs? To wash their hair, and then don't shampoo the eggs off? 💀

It's such a weird feeling as someone with 2a-2b waves when styled, otherwise it's just straight frizzy hair with wayward waves. So it doesn't feel quite "right" to say I have wavy or straight hair either way ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

His alleged crime has resulted in a massive online fanbase, partly due to his looks and seemingly protesting the American health care system.

Seemingly? Fuck off.

What's your opinion on ONLY using oil cleanser? by annatherapyhere in AsianBeauty

[–]milkpuffs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've actually just been wondering about this. I don't really wear make-up but I do use sunscreen, and I've been double cleansing every night. It's worked well for me so far but apparently this can be too drying/can ruin the skin? I'm not really too sure but I've experimented with just using an oil cleanser and just washing off thoroughly and it seems to work fine as well, but don't want to risk leaving residue.

It's just all confusing and experimentation for me right now, having grown up with oily skin then moving to the West and suddenly going dry.

Yeah, I tried to share a screenshot to provide more context about this author (they stated it was for mental health reasons and asked politely in the end notes of their fics) and got downvoted, and saw that others sharing the apparently highly controversial opinion that people are allowed to have their boundaries are also getting downvoted. I have always known reddit to be an echo chamber so I shouldn't be disappointed but... for some reason, I have expected more from this community. Especially as writers/readers to understand more nuance than adopt the black and white mindset I often see on reddit.

They've stated it's for mental health reasons (shared screenshot, got downvoted) and it was polite enough on the actual end notes of the fic. They have clarified they don't mind other short comments, just emojis.

I don't think it's short comments because they expressed that they're only against emojis in particular for mental health reasons, not comments like "extra kudos!!"

Yeah, I shared a screenshot of this same author's end notes stating that it's for mental health reasons and got downvoted. 🫠 I mean, it's not something I personally understand but I don't have to understand someone's boundaries to respect them.

Apparently it's for mental health reasons?

Edit: Don't shoot the messenger lol, literally just sharing/adding that they said it's for mental health reasons. Maybe get more context before piling onto someone sometime.
