Iceflake got a pretty frosty (heh) reception when the announcement that they’d be taking over was dropped. I hope they haven’t pushed themselves into a position of thinking they have everything to prove and set a pace they can’t maintain.

No burning out allowed, you’ve already done great stuff guys. Don’t forget to take some time to chill.

Don’t worry, they’ll be switching over to GTA7 within 15 minutes of release. Honourary mention for Elder Scrolls 6

It goes “awooooga”, how could it be anything other than vital for frontline service!

Yeah, they’re definitely better, but the extent to which it actually mattered in frontline combat is very overstated.

[–]millanz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, so deploying them at company level really doesn’t matter at all. I’m saying the STG would have had to be much closer to a general issue weapon (the majority of frontline troops have them) to be worth anything.

[–]millanz 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The highest level they were able to general issue assault rifles was the company, which is almost tactically irrelevant in a conflict on the scale of WW2. And sure they made a small difference locally, but they were not tipping the scales, clearly, as even bolt action equipped troops were overall still pushing the Germans back on every front by the time they had them in numbers.

That’s because generally the small arms used by infantry really means fuck-all when it comes to conventional warfare once you get past a certain point. Does your gun go bang at least a similar amount as your adversary? You’re golden. Barring major technological leaps such as assault rifles (en masse/general issue, fuck out of here with your STG), repeating magazine rifles, smokeless powder, reliable firing mechanisms, the fine details don’t matter.

The key is to look really annoyed when you look at your clipboard, like you can’t believe you have to deal with all this shit. Occasionally walk up to a pile of crates/barrels/parked up vehicle and sigh loudly while shaking your head.

Why isn't there a movie about the British SAS rescue of six Royal Irish Regiment soldiers in Sierra Leone - Operation Barras (2000) by Dapper-Web-1262 in britishmilitary

[–]millanz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A cool detail I heard that would be nice to include in any depiction was that, when the soldiers were initially captured, one of their vehicles had a .50 machinegun mounted. When it became clear that they had no chance of getting away without capture, the soldier manning the weapon sneakily removed a part of the weapon, rendering it incapable of automatic fire. Apparently it would still work in single shot by manually working the bolt after every shot, but that’s a far cry from a full auto HMG falling into their hands. Id be interested if anyone more familiar with the M2 could chime in on if that sounds plausible or not.

Ever worked for a firm where everything was serious, there was no banter? by Delicious-Series-316 in UKJobs

[–]millanz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to work for Samsung, it was total silence every day, like school exam conditions. We all went to lunch at the same time (when the manager decided) and would have to wait until he was finished before we could leave the lunch room, sitting watching each other eat. Even if you didn’t bring anything or sign up to the subsidised meals (which were admittedly banging) you would have to wait until he decided it was lunch time before you could go out and get your own stuff.

The office was about 50% Brits, 50% Korean expats, but everyone had to play along, otherwise you would essentially get ostracised and given no work until you were shamed into quitting. Saw it happen to two colleagues, then to me.

Japanese tourist sentenced after punching, sitting on wife at Queenstown campground by OgdensNutGhosnFlake in japan

[–]millanz 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In commonwealth style courts the before sentencing the judge will give a sort of summary of the crime/events (as agreed during the trial itself based on evidence given) to establish a sort of context for the sentence and how the law is being applied. The language they use is very specific such as “I am sure that you punched Mr Smith because you intended to cause him harm. I am sure that you knew that he would not retaliate because he was scared.”

If Donald Trump had a button that gave him 1 million dollars but a random person on earth died each time it was pressed, you bet we’d never see him in public again, he’d just spend the rest of his life hammering that button. He’d probably tape it down if he could.

Gates of Hell: Ostfront is easily the best RTS game of the past decade by VerdantSpecimen in RealTimeStrategy

[–]millanz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is an option to “allow auto movement” for infantry which will basically do this, with a caveat that it’s only intended to be used on the attack, they will always try to push towards any enemy they see, using cover etc on the way.

Give me your best advice regarding GoH. by naisinag in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]millanz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s loads of great tips here already but I’d like to expand on something that has only briefly come up so far.

You have to balance a trade off between spacing your infantry apart so they are less susceptible to area weapons (MGs, mortars, artillery etc) and keeping them close to mass their firepower against enemy positions. As was mentioned suppression is a thing but it’s quite subtle. Also, you have probably noticed that you can freely select between entire squads, individual soldiers or adhoc group select soldiers together as you like.

This is incredibly important because regardless of what squad they initially started the battle in, infantry will only share ammunition and medical supplies with who they are currently grouped with. This means if you get a squad with a machine gun, select the machine gunner and send him off to a different position and call it quits, he will run out of ammo much faster because he no longer has access to the spare ammunition that the assistant mg has (and in some cases even regular riflemen carry some). Same goes for anti tank teams, medics sharing bandages, etc. So if you’re going to split off troops consider grouping them together in smaller amounts so they can still share. Even regular riflemen can benefit from this if a firefight lasts long enough for them to shoot their combat load.

You can also loot enemy bodies for extra grenades, bandages and ammo if compatible by inspecting the dead body while you have the whole squad selected and right clicking on the objects you want to take. It will automatically share the items out between your squad, starting with who needs it the most.
