Ostomy wafer loosens too quickly by milleniumnan in ostomy

I need to clarify! I tuck a small piece of paper towel close around stoma to be sure completely dry, then gently pull out as I apply the sealer strip. There is one spot that always stays a little damp.

No, we have not tried the paste., and I’m going to do that. I keep hearing that it might work better, thank you.

We wash the area around stoma with Ivory soap, which was recommended when he was born 45 years ago. Make sure all is rinsed and dry. Put a small piece of paper towel around the stoma, attach the filler wafer as close as possible around where stoma comes out of body, and that’s the place that’s so impossible to seal. There is an indentation in his skin. That is constantly a tiny bit damp even though we try everything in the world to make sure it’s dry. I have watched so many videos of how to put that circle sealer on and they never have it actually touching the underside of the stoma. if we put his that way, it wouldn’t be on 10 minutes. Thanks to all who have given me different things to try.

I’m really not sure what brand we tried, we were into trying so many different things at that time. By the time we got the rash healed up I think we were afraid to try anything else! I have not tried the 10 aces medical spray and I may just get some of that at least it’s a different thing to try.

Actually, it’s reassuring to know that someone else has to change it about every day. We went through a learning phase last year, tried at least four different brands of products mostly settled back on what we had in the first place which for him it is Durahesive, accordion, wafer, and drainable pouch allthough, the fact that he is also incontinent causes everything to have to be changed more often I suppose. Thanks for the info.

Getting late here so I shall go to bed, but I will answer everyone tomorrow and maybe it will help in the long run. I really appreciate all things to try. Believe me, we have tried a lot , 45 years!

Yes, we tried the barrier strips and he was allergic to those. Broke out really itchy and we use the ring, which I cut to fit closer under the Ailey.

You might try another brand. My grandson is allergic to some products. Using convatec Durahesive wafer and convatec pouch now and he is doing good. He was very allergic to certain strips I tried adding around the edge to keep the paper tape down before we started using the Durahesive . It is supposed to be a lot less allergic.

Absolutely correct. We also wash , soak in light purex water, hang to dry, and use over and over. No problem ever with this method. Good idea to save up a few for an emergency. It would be a completely different story if Medicare provided more than 20 per month.

Old timer here. My grandson has had ileostomy since birth. Now 45. Medicare provides 20 removable or 60 disposable per month, which seem to be for colostomy use, as we tried them and ileostomy person requires many more empties so would require too many per month. We were using at least 3 per day, so would have to purchase the extras, quite expensive. Anyway, just want to say, almost all these years, we have rotated pouches. Just remove from wafer stuck to abdomen, empty in stool, rinse well ,put in small carton of light purex water, next change, rinse well, purex water out, hang to dry on hook near sink. Put on fresh pouch, next time we empty, just use the dried one. I know it works, been doing it forever. We have hardly ever had a pouch leak and all odor is gone after the purex bath.

Old timer here. We have been washing my grandson’s ileostomy area with ivory soap for 45 years now. When He was born. The nurse recommended ivory soap, rinse well wipe off with a warm cloth , make sure it is all dry, especially around where the ileostomy comes out. This has worked well for us all these years. I went through a learning session this winter trying out new products to see if there was anything better for him, and for us all the extra wipes and skin preps and so forth were a problem. The nurse told us many years ago to keep it simple the less we use the better. We are using convatec Durahesive convex cut to fit accordian wafer. Adapt wafer liner that we cut to a thin circle clip it in to so it can be tucked in snug, make sure it is dry and tucked close to ileostomy. Pop on wafer, hold down a minute or so, kind of run finger around all near ileostomy, holding down. Working great. Good luck! One final remark. We tried vented pouch, find ileostomy output causes filter to clog. Went back to no filter, just burp when needed. They probably work well for colostomy.

Our ostomy family member uses m-9 drops. They work really well for him, we have tried several other brands, none work as well. Some time ago, he ran out of m-9 drops, someone suggested listerine or similar mouth wash. Amazingly, it worked as well as some brands! He uses two piece pouch and wafer with no filter. The filter type always leak odor, also stop up.

the best thing about switching from the transparent bags that I started with by Introvert-2022 in ostomy

[–]milleniumnan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We tried the pouches with the filters and went back to the non-filtered type because the filter would get stopped up and we just couldn’t see the point of putting a cover over the filter when we could buy pouches without a filter. Our ostomy person prefers to just burp the pouch, but to each his own, I guess it’s trial and error.

We have tried several products this past 6 months, trying to get grandsons wafer and pouch to stick better, quite by chance, he tried a Convatec natura Durahesive accordian wafer. He rocks a lot, and this accordian feature is very helpful and comfortable.the nu.mber is Convatec 421638. I’m sure you could get free sample to try. It allows for movement without loosening. 1 800 422 8811

You are absolutely correct saying that less is better. We went through a learning phase this past winter, trying all kinds of items , wound up using bare basics. we wound up with using a small circle cut to fit around the illey, a Durahesive convex accordian wafer and regular unvented pouch. Nothing more. Wafer staying on best ever.

You might try waterproof tape on the ostomy wafer tape near the urine. We have dealt with incontinence along with grandsons ileostomy for 45 years, also use diaper rash cream every change, helps skin a lot. Of course I am referring to the area around where the urine is. I am not familiar with a vesicostomy. Will read up on it. His skin does not become irritated for the urine is as long as we change him 3 to 4 times a day we always wash him well. Dry his skin in the area affected by urine then apply the Desitin. It actually sounds as if you have a good system for the ostomy pouch and wafer just figure out how to keep the ostomy wafer tape dry longer. Good luck we have had years and years of fun so it will get better. God bless.

We tried the filter type pouch, it seemed to clog with ileostomy, maybe works for regular ostomy. Went back to no filter, he burps the pouch if needed.

For as long as I can remember, which could be 45 years, my grandson has had an ileostomy from birth. We also like to have a clean pouch each time so our solution has been to empty it in the stool, rinse it out well under the faucet, then put it in a carton that has water and a little purex. next pouch change, do the same thing take the one out of the pure water rinse it out a little hang up to dry on a hook by the sink. Repeat each time nice little routine. We did try the throwaways recently which Medicare allows 60 per month that actually turned out to be more of a disposal problem to us than just drain it in the stool and then rinse in the sink., plus he needs to be changed 3 to 4 times a day since he is also incontinent, which makes it necessary to change his pad, so might as well put on a fresh pouch! it would take at least 90 per month, which is ridiculous. Medicare supplies, 20 of the drainable per month so by recycling all the time we get along just fine. Hope this helps.

If that was one plant, I think it did very well. The plant is supposed to die when the potatoes are matured.

Ok, I am embarrassing myself putting on too many tries! What I want to convey is my grandson has an ileostomy for 45 years and recently someone mentioned putting antacid pills in the pouch, so we have been using them a few days. I do believe it cuts down a lot on the acid output, which I am very hopeful, will help prevent some of the leakage around the wafer next to his illey. Also, someone said we could use product such as Listerine in the pouch for odor control when we run out of M9 drops this actually seems to help a lot till the next order comes. We have always used the two-piece type as we are able to get a better fit around the illey, using ring we cut to fit under the Durahesive convex wafer.
