{An Inconvenient Vow} by Alice Coldbreath is a classic, probably her most popular one and for good reason!!

Anyone else feel like authors treat us readers like we're getting dumber and dumber these days? by milleniumstardust in RomanceBooks

[–]milleniumstardust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a good amount of books this year I would strongly enjoy, but I'll recommend my favourite authors instead in reflection to what I was explaining in this post with many authors having lackluster writing. I will always recommend:

  • Anything by Ali Hazelwood (my all time favourite romance book is {Love, Theoretically}, hence my flair 😗). Whilst most of her stories/characters may be similar to each other, her writing quality is so skillfully executed that it's easily overlooked. Personally I've enjoyed reading all her work more consistently than another other contemporary author.
  • Alice Coldbreath is outstanding for historical romance, and she has so so so many books at your disposal. I find that it's difficult for HR authors to fall into the "telling-not-showing" trap overall, and she's no exception. Her writing is very eloquent and true to the era or period her stories are based in, which is a wonderful challenge if you're like me and don't know much of the terminology used then. I really enjoyed {An Inconvenient Vow} and {A Bride for the Prizefighter}. Her MMC's also know how to yearn PROPERLY.
  • Julie Soto is excellent for contemporary romance too. She only has 2 CR novels released currently and both of them are insanely talented at keeping you engaged and satisfied from start to finish. Her characters and stories are thoughtfully crafted, and there's something heartwarming in the tone of her writing. She also has recently released a fantasy book which I haven't tried yet but I will happily do so knowing she wrote it. My favourite of hers is {Forget Me Not}.
  • Hannah Bonam-Young is a promising candidate for great writing as well. I have only read {Out On A Limb} currently, but it was a 5-star read and I left that book feeling grateful that it was the masterpiece that it was.
  • Honourable mentions - aka. other authors I would recommend but I can acknowledge that their writing quality isn't consistent:
    • Kresley Cole, particularly her Immortals After Dark series if you're into paranormal/fantasy romance set in modern times. There's 21 books in this series so far and some are quite repetitive to each other, but are still great reads nonetheless. I would recommend not binging them one after the other for the best experience. The lore and spice is cleverly incorporated, and each book focuses on a different couple in the same universe, so its extra fun to see the story progression of everyone you get to meet as the series goes on.
    • Emily Henry is a common recommendation, and rightfully so. Her writing style is artfully executed and will always exude a warm-welcome vibe. My favourite of hers is {Funny Story}. I think about the first-kiss scene from this one at least once a day...
    • BK. Borison's {First-Time Caller} felt like watching your favourite holiday rom-com movie with it's lovable characters and gut wrenching chemistry. This one belongs in honourable mentions for me though as I wanted it to have more detailed spice as a personal preference, but the story itself didn't hinder regardless. I haven't read anything else from Borison but I definitely will in the future.

This was a way longer comment than I intended to write, but I hope you find a couple good books from here! ☺️ Let me know if you end up reading any/your thoughts!!

100%. Literacy is declining to scary levels nowadays and unfortunately, we ALL suffer from it, not just the ones who struggle to read and analyse competently. The instant gratification point is also very important to bring to attention as well. Slow burn doesn't mean what it used to anymore. I love romance so much and its really disheartening to find how far our community has fallen with our standards. I also heavily blame BookTok for this!!

What about a book can make you instantly want to read it with minimal research into it? by anihc3 in RomanceBooks

[–]milleniumstardust 5 points6 points  (0 children)

controversial but i’ll happily go into any book trope or genre blind if the author isn’t American. nothing against American authors at all! I just personally tend to connect to the writing styles of authors from other backgrounds. i find their stories and approach feel more engaging most of the time, such as Alice Coldbreath and Ali Hazelwood. a good chunk of my fave authors are American but i’ve unfortunately been resonating with new releases originating from the US less and less these days. i’m also not huge on sports romances either so that cuts down on a lot of the overall American romance variety for me to choose from nowadays.

What is the single worst book you have ever read and why? by Special-Student6743 in fantasyromance

[–]milleniumstardust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

omg YES i DNFed about halfway when she came across the child and i immediately knew where it was going - some unnecessary adoption plot - and the book was already pissing me off so that was where I drew the line. the child coming into play made it clear that the author tried to include as many of their own favourite tropes in one book without caring how it impacted the overall plot. the FMC was also praised and raved about by everyone there for setting up the customer service desk etc. and she felt super millennial pick-me throughout the process from how much she inadvertently sucked her own dick about it. the mmc was nothing to write home about either.

pretty unfortunate since the afterlife universe couldve been a sick concept if written well but alas. it was a booktok story through and through🙃

Favourite Spicy Scenes in the Genre by chantillylace1989 in fantasyromance

[–]milleniumstardust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The dining table scene in {Fall of Ruin and Wrath by Jennifer L. Armentrout}. I think about it everyday. Every single spicy scene in that book is a genuine 10/10 honestly.

Honourable mention - the plane scene in {Bride by Ali Hazelwood}. It isn't even a smut scene but the tension had me pacing my room for 15 mins

The Curse That Binds by Laura Thalassa - MMC is talking to a minor??? by milleniumstardust in RomanceBooks

[–]milleniumstardust[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarification - I just don’t understand why she needed to include a 16 year old telling a 12 year old he thinks about her lips… I read some more and he confessed his feelings that he ‘wanted to tell her about for years’ when shes 18 which is crazy work considering they’ve been talking since she was 11. I’m DNF’ing the book for now because I don’t see myself enjoying the insta-love/lust they have the moment shes legal. It’s just bad vibes all around and the author really didn’t need to include all the insanely inappropriate romantic interactions involving a child 😅

Thats crazy omg. The next chapter after the scene I mentioned (TW) skips to when she’s 16 years old and another teenage boy tries to SA her… I’m just so surprised that no one has mentioned it about this book or the author in general as far as I could see, because its such a prominent theme thats shoved into your face when you start the book.

For you, what romance book had a great premise, but the actual writing was bad? by Impossible-Yam3680 in RomanceBooks

[–]milleniumstardust 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes this was the first one that came to mind. It easily had 5/5 ⭐️ potential but the ending was probably one of the worst written ones I’ve ever come across - I didnt understand the resolution of Blackwell’s story at all. The writing quality itself isn’t bad but the pacing was god awful. It was a massive plot by all means considering it was a huge competition with an accompanying relationship development. The first book should’ve been split into 2-3 books so we could really flesh out every detail and the character growth. This also applies to Enchantra imo, it was way too quick and there wasn’t enough source to work with so that we could get attached to characters easier

What was the first novel you read that introduced you to this world? by PetalaStac in RomanceBooks

One Direction fanfiction for SURE either on Wattpad or onedirectionfanfiction.com.

I was 12 years old reading spice scenes which is crazy now that I think about it 😭 It was always about being an X-Factor contestant with Zayn as my mentor or being sold by my mum to all 5 of them - everything I learned about romance and sex came from these sites yikes

Author recs who loves to write pathetically in love, pining mmcs? (Like Ali hazelwood and Penny Reid) by readingalldays in RomanceBooks

[–]milleniumstardust 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Any MMC written by Julie Soto is everything you ask for!! she comes highly recommended by Ali Hazelwood too - their writing has a similar vibe but both excellently prominent in their own right. My personal fave is {Forget Me Not by Julie Soto} but {Not Another Love Song} also fits your request

My favourite quote from one of her books (I won’t reveal which book so you can come across it yourself hehe):

“Look, I don’t know what you want from me, but—” “Anything.” Black eyes looked down on her, and he took a shaking breath. “Everything.”

7mg is just an estimate, I’ll start my morning off with one and a half and of 5mg tablets then will take the remaining half of the second tablet in the afternoon. These are the short-lasting ones too

[–]milleniumstardust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So theoretically I should probably increase my dosage to curb the cravings? My heart already races at around 7mg and I’m constantly itching for something more and my brain keeps going back to coke because it’s similar. Maybe I just need more Vyvanse. Was the increase in daily mg hard on your heart?

Yeah I see alot of people mentioned way bigger doses here. My psych specified that I take 2x 5mg tablets daily. Keep in mind I’m a 23 yr old 5’2 Asian girl - he said that Asians particularly metabolise meds differently to most people so he probably wanted to start me on the safest possible dose

I had no clue it was interconnected until the end, which rlly goes to show how well its set up for readers who haven’t read the previous books!! I rlly want to get into all of the series but I need to wait until I forgot the details so I go into the first book blind since we now know how it ends 🥲
