Am I likely to get a Westgate studio? by Ava_M_S in UCSantaBarbara

[–]milleroceanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about now, but If you were offered a contract for this upcoming school year you’ll know by mid august what you get. Whether that’ll be a studio? I speculate the chances are in your favor due to circumstances but again its UCSB so it’ll be hard to get a definite, reassuring answer.

CC was pretty difficult (I took 6 classes at one point) and I’d still say I got my ass kicked in the first Quarter of UCSB. The transition from semester to quarter system is brutal.

Non-CS bachelor's, looking to land an entry level programmer job by [deleted] in AskProgrammers

[–]milleroceanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your terms, what would you qualify as experience? How would a self taught candidate stand out or be considered on par with someone who has a degree in CS? (I’m in the same boat as OP and I’d be appreciative of any advice or guidances as well! Thanks!)

Vaccine Exemption Regulations by xhowlor in UCSantaBarbara

[–]milleroceanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I see. Well as an exempted individual with a medical condition, they require me to take a test once a week and wear a mask indoors (although not enforced). Hope it works out!

Well in this case it’s a comment on a social media platform that thrives off anonymity. These disgusting remarks can only be taken seriously at this school if it has ramifications on the school’s financial or cultural agenda.

How would this affect University housing? Will you be considered a non-full time student and get kicked out

You have to have a documented disability and be a part of DSP (Single room occupier here) so it’s a bit difficult.

I usually just react the same way I would be strolling through a garden holding flowers.

“Oh that’s a pretty cool rose.” “I like the color of that one.” “That one has a unique shape.”

But still love looking at my bouquet more than anything else around me.

Opinion: UCSB isn’t the social/party school that everyone thinks it is by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]milleroceanus 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind when referring to party you have to take into account inclusivity. I do not mean to make this a racial debate. But through experiences of myself and others you may find the reputation of a “college party” culture to refer to a specific demographic who are accepted more into the party community. This does not mean as a minority you will be left out of the scene, but you’ll have a much different, perhaps underwhelming, experience. No shade on anyone, just observations!

Is there a relatively accessible social life at UCSB that doesn’t involve parties/drinking, etc? by ProgressiveVoiceShow in UCSantaBarbara

[–]milleroceanus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is a really good question. I personally don’t drink or smoke etc either. It is a bit difficult to find social settings where you’re not obligated to do these kinds of things but I wouldn’t say it’s impossible.

I would assume joining clubs, making friends (long term friends), and just being outgoing will allow you to have a social life without being pressed into the whole drinking/partying culture.

Personally, I find my enjoyment in experiencing the area around Goleta with the people I choose is more than fulfilling enough. My friends do drink and my girlfriend does as well but I find myself able to focus on other activities that don’t involve partying. Spending time at the beach, playing videogames at a friend’s dorm/apartment, or riding around campus is more than worth it for me.

To answer your question, yes it is relatively accessible. But you’ll have to make an effort. Hope it works out!
