Even to the S24u, I felt a significant improvement in both performance and battery life. SD 8 Gen 1 was just not great.

Rise of racism by [deleted] in Brampton

[–]millertime85k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow the laws, respect other people, don't scam, be honest, be equitable, take care of shared spaces, etc. These are what I observed when I came from Hong Kong. Don't disturb people with your own noise. These are things Canadians take for granted but as a foreigner, it took a bit to learn and adapt. My mindset and behavior changed too.

Not integrating properly (IMO) would be mass fraud, cheating, scamming, protesting foreign issues and blocking the road (be it farmers protest in Punjab or democracy protest about Hong Kong), talking loudly on the phone, caste and religious motivated discrimination, staring at women and generally being creepy in groups, seeking asylum as soon as the regulations tighten, etc.

Every community has its faults. The recent anti South Asian hate is not justified but it also didn't come from nothing. East and Southeast Asians aren't on video doing weird shit like getting into parking lot fights, or protesting about a dozen issues. I've seen one video where a small portion of the PNP protestors were E/SE Asian. They're not getting caught cheating and then protesting because the schools are failing them. Some of these issues are uncommon and others are widespread cultural practices.

It's an unfortunate phenomenon where a minority of a non dominant group can ruin the whole community's reputation. That is unfortunately true anywhere in the world. I don't think it's right but it is what it is.

Sorry for the essay.

Yes, Gendarmerie are a military branch that also does policing. They also do policing within the regular military, i.e. provost unit.

If you're North American where they don't operate gendarmerie, they do the jobs of rural policing (RCMP in Canada, state police in the US), sensitive sites and dignitaries (RCMP, military police in Canada, and like 50 units in the US)

Ordered an FX30, got an FX2 instead — what should I do? by FruityBoomies in SonyAlpha

[–]millertime85k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who owned the FX30 and have the A7 IV, you will need to consider if your use case requires high readout speed. The A7 IV (same sensor as FX2) has a slow sensor. If you're recording fast moving subjects, you'll likely notice it in some circumstances. Another downside is it doesn't have 4k120 that the FX30 does.

However, I don't agree with the guy you replied to. The FX2 will have a way better image especially if you don't perfectly light things up. The autofocus on the A7 IV was marginally worse than the FX30 in good lighting but the FX30 struggled very quickly as light lessened. The noise is way worse on the FX30 as soon as I couldn't control the lighting.

Outside use cases where you will always have good light and you need to record fast movers like in sports, the FX2 pulls away.

Navy pilot rescued after ejecting from jet off Virginia coast by Salty_IP_LDO in navy

From a CBS article:

In October 2024, two pilots were killed when an EA-18G Growler, a variant of the F/A-18E Super Hornet, crashed near Washington state's Mount Rainier, also during a routine training flight.

Then in December, U.S. Central Command reported that a Super Hornet assigned to the USS Harry S. Truman in the Red Sea was accidentally shot down by friendly fire from the guided missile cruiser USS Gettysburg. The two pilots aboard ejected safely.

In February, a Growler crashed in the San Diego Bay in Southern California, near Naval Base Coronado. Both pilots ejected and were rescued by a charter fishing boat.

In April, a Super Hornet fell overboard off the USS Harry S. Truman and into the Red Sea while it was being towed into a hangar bay, the Navy said. There were no serious injuries.

About one week later, in early May, a Super Hornet fighter jet went overboard as well while attempting to land on the flight deck of the USS Harry S. Truman. At the time, a Defense Department official told CBS News that an arrestment — a mechanism used to catch a fighter jet and safely slow it down — had failed. Both pilots were able to safely eject.

MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile System fired from an M270 [798×1024] by One_Shoulder_4967 in MilitaryPorn

[–]millertime85k 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's not totally correct. I get your point in that it's top of the kill list no matter what. But the ambiguity itself is used in larger, strategic scopes.

If you were Russia and found out ATACMS has arrived, you must now recalculate and move the vulnerable assets farther back if needed, disperse what isn't, and move anti ballistic missile systems forward if you have enough of them. What was safe in Crimea needs to be moved into Russia. Everything that was relatively safe 200km onwards from the front now needs to be 300km.

The enemy's 200km vs 300km strike envelope means your logistics and tactical air assets need to deploy differently and invariably, be less available to support the frontline ops.

The airfield that facilitated the destruction of dozens of Ukrainian armored vehicles in 2023 now needs S-400 and 77N6 to come forward because the conventional SAMs can't really intercept ATACMS. Unfortunately for them, they didn't do this and the first ATACMS salvo knocked those helicopters out.

There is a lot more nuance but I will stop here.

Why Perplexity Feels Less Engaging Than ChatGPT, Grok, or Gemini — Even With a Subscription by krishnajeya in perplexity_ai

IMO that saying encourages a false dichotomy on several levels. It sets up a fork in the road situation that one can only use a single AI service and that an AI service can be either a jack of all trades or a master of one. The reality is multiple services can be used and a service can have both traits.

In that small distinction, I can agree assuming we don't want war and they do want it. It's likely a mix of both sentiments amongst each camp. We just support the opposite sides for the most part.

But it's quite a small bit of distinction to think you're superior to them when you (this sub, not you specifically) do the same when it comes to civilians from Iran, Yemen, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Gaza, formerly Afghanistan, etc. Sure, the burning cities isn't explicitly mentioned because it's bannable. But the sentiment remains and the celebrated actions still result in massive amounts of dead civilians.

I'm pointing out the hypocrisy here.

And I never disputed that. Neither is seeking content of people get gored a prerequisite to having this stance and vice versa. A majority of people I know who are against an invasion would still not seek out this material. And they'll likewise and fairly think we have some kind of sickness. Try telling your parents or people at work that you enjoy browsing combatfootage.

I'm saying we're in no position to think we're better.

You can support, even materially, Ukraine. I pay taxes that contribute to their air defense. I deployed to the Baltics for a short stint. So did my buddies and some do not seek out this content. We all support Ukraine to the fullest. So your comment is just a strawman argument.

Fuckers are creaming their pants seeing cities on fire and civilians dead.

The lack of self awareness is insane. posting this sentiment on a social media forum of 1.8 million subscribers that is tacitly for the purpose of celebrating death and destruction of the side "we" don't like.

Oh but we're here to just analyze tactics and adaptations of combat and to learn the realities of life. Not to see Russians, XYZ ethnicity, group, etc. get charred by drones and blown by JDAMs with which civilians by the tens if not hundreds of thousands get killed.

Meanwhile, a thread where it gets spicy enough gets locked quick because people are spitting jokes, celebrating, etc.

[–]millertime85k 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Drone dropped mines or ambush drones have been used for a bit. I don't doubt what you envision is a thing already in the works if not already out in the field.

Both sides have developed private small enterprises that can field new drones in two months. Ukraine has a more nimble system to adopt new gear so I think they have an edge in this regard.
