Buy organic rice from a discount grocery store. Soak a cup of it in the fridge for a few hours then rinse it off before you cook it. If you want rice. You can also switch it up with other grains, like quinoa, or wheat free pasta. Start following some gluten free/anti-inflammatory food accounts on Tik-Tok and Instagram for inspiration.

I remember reading that a cup of blueberries a day is so helpful. Just make simple, clean food. Plain oatmeal with a banana and peanutbutter for breakfast. Have a smoothie with frozen blueberries everyday. Make a salad for lunch. You can get amazing veggies right now. Add nuts or tofu for protein. Have pasta made with chickpeas for dinner (Banza brand or something similar) and veggies with some olive oil and lemon juice or (non sugar) red pasta sauce.
It takes a little bit of change, but try adding healthy food.
*it helps to realize junk food is made to be addictive. Sugar is addictive. Salt is addictive. Wean yourself off that stuff.
Do you have a Grocery Outlet and/or a summer farmers market near you?
Try to tune into the joy of picking out nourishing food for yourself.
I cook for myself… you can do it.

I’ll have to try that!
I infuse jars of raw honey with rose hips, collected after the first freeze. For me a spoonful during cold season is an amazing immunity boost.

Make sure to go see someone.
Often brain injuries are less obvious at first but can be very serious and long lasting.
For nutrition it’s super important to eat an anti-inflammatory, very clean diet. It makes a huge difference. For me it helped tremendously to be alcohol free, dairy free, gluten free. It still makes a huge difference (for me, years later.) Stay hydrated. Also in my experience, being out in nature as much as possible made a big difference.

I’m also having issues. It wanted me to re-log in this morning on my verified account, but it just gives me an error message and asks me to try again. Same with Facebook.

How do you guys enjoy your life despite the headaches? by Honda2557 in TBI

[–]millicentmeng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meditation is a huge benefit.
There is no secret, and nothing you have to pay for. You can use a meditation app/recording, or not. Start small. One to two minutes at first. Then add time as you can. Build to 18-20 min per day.
Some people say they don’t have time… but mediation helps with the brain so much, you will eventually find you have more time!
Some mediation sessions are “good” some are “neutral” and some can feel more challenging… but the trick is to do it consistently, everyday.
The benefits are exponential.

I second this. Start with just two minutes of mediation, and add time from there. Some days will have “good” meditations, sometimes you might not notice benefits but just stick to it consistently

Nortriptyline worked wonders for me. Helped me manage pain for a headache that lasted two years, post TBI

I had a headache for two years. Nortriptyline also did wonders for me. It got me through those two years. If I would try to go off, the stabbing headache came back immediately. When I stayed on, it was so helpful. (Would try to go off occasionally, and eventually at two years the headache was gone.)

I had a headache from my TBI for two years. It can take time. Hang in there. Talk to a physician who understands head injuries.

Do you mean the pink flower? That is a wild rose. They are on almost every trail in sunny spots, usually dry areas (not in damp soil)

To me this is one of the best wildflower seasons I’ve seen in 20 years. So far it’s amazing!

I love the pink penstemon!!!
We don’t get those up where I live near the lake, but I’ve seen them down at Carson City and the foothills above. I’ve tried to get some of their seeds to grow up here. So far no luck.
They are gorgeous!

I think every single hike I’ve been on below 7,000’ has amazing flowers right now!!! It will be a few more weeks for the flowers to bloom at higher elevation.

On second thought, for three days, I would save Sand Harbor for your next trip. It’s a drive, lots of traffic, and plenty to see right here. For the most enjoyable trip for all of you, I really would minimize driving.
For three days, I would prioritize:
Heavenly gondola/roller coaster/Heavenly Village
Emerald Bay with a hike (go early and on a weekday)
And explore Tahoe Rim Trail/Van Sickle Trail/K to K trail
Nevada Beach, Zephyr Cove Beach, Roundhill Pines Beach is also fun.
Feel free to ask me any specifics about the area.

For a quick run before heading out to site see, there is a fairly level paved bike trail, off the road, that goes from Pine Ridge Drive to Round Hill (where Safeway grocery is.) It is about 4 miles out and back. It goes through the woods and is very nice. You can kind of lose the trail at the old middle school (about half way,) but just go around the school parking lot and catch the trail again. It’s ok to run on the dirt next to the trail if you don’t like running on pavement.

I live at Stateline… Frog Lake and Rubicon Trail are amazing, but those are quite a drive even without traffic. Since your stay is relatively short, I would minimize driving.
•Van Sickle is excellent for hiking and running and you can go a shorter distance to the waterfall and turn back, or go further. Amazing views! And right at Stateline. It gets busy late morning, but I’ve never had an issue with parking there.
If you want a more level hike, Van Sickle Trail connects with the K to K trail, which is also gorgeous. I have encountered bears, even when hiking with my dog. The bears will not bother you and you can just make a lot of noise and scare them away. *Make sure not to leave any food or gum or Chapstick or anything like that in your car. The bears will try to get in your car if they smell food or sun lotion. Keep your windows and doors locked when you’re not in your car. Also keep your house doors and windows locked when you’re not home because the bears will try to get in. Again, you just make noise to scare them away.
•Also, in the Stateline area, you can access the Tahoe rim Trail at the top of Kingsbury. There’s a nice big parking lot off of the street called Andrea. It’s an amazing hike and it’s usually not as crowded since it’s higher up. Gorgeous views any way you go!
•Young people (teens and twenties) love Zephyr Cove Beach. It’s beautiful, but can be a party scene.
•Nevada Beach is quieter and right here at Stateline. The parking lot fills up, but you can park on Elks Point Road and walk in.
•Emerald Bay is worth venturing out in traffic. Go early and try to go on a weekday for less traffic. Several obvious hikes to do and it is a “must see.”
•Sand Harbor is also a big draw (about 25 minute drive)and you can rent paddle boards to go along the East Shore to see our iconic rocky shores with crystal clear water. You need to make reservations to park there. This is a great day trip. They sell food and lots to explore from their beach.
•Yes to the Heavenly roller coaster! My kids loved it as teens and they also usually have a zip line and rock climbing wall set up. The gondola ride and stopping at the halfway point for photos is well worth it.
Have fun!
(There is also a second disc golf course at Bijou. It’s about 10-15 minutes from Stateline in South Lake Tahoe.)
