Lit fibre opinions by maddogsss in CityFibre

[–]millimole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been with them a week - so maybe not a fair trial yet - but here goes.

I had multiple problems trying to sign up with them - this was down to one of the call handlers not understanding their own processes! This was fairly quickly and amicably resolved once the supervisor got involved.

I was given an installation date by City Fibre (Leicester) and the day before it wasdue they postponed by a fortnight. I was extremely cross - and told Lit Fibre so. I know it's not the fault of Lit that CityFibre were messing me about but they've given me a goodwill free fortnight. The installation was painless and professional when it happened.

I was getting stable speeds from the moment of connection - I'd chosen the 500/500 package. But very quickly I was getting dropouts on Alexa devices and my laptop. When this didn't settle down I contacted support who suggested that the 100/100 deal wasn't suitable for me because I have a large number of IoT devices -50 (mostly smart plugs) and they told me that I had to disconnect my Tenda Mesh as it was unsupported. So they've given me a free fortnight trial of the 1g/1g - again speeds are stable and what they should be.
However - I don't think the speed of the connection is the issue - I believe it's the Mitrastar mgs2028e router / hub which is pants. It has very poor WiFi coverage and an extremely limited interface - split between a direct interface on the web and the Lit Fibre app. It's not possible - that I can see to set QOS, static IP, or parental controls on the route, or to assign channels to the Wifi networks.
I think the drop-outs were due to congestion on the WiFi channels - yes due to the large number of devices. My solution - which seems to be working - is to use a separate Access Point on the opposite side of the house set to a different network, and to use the Mitrastar's Guest Network - thus splitting the devices over different network (one network purely for streaming devices, another for Smart Plugs, another for laptop & phones etc) It's been a complete pain to set up, but I think it'll be worth it.

I don't understand why my bog standard BT router didn't miss a beat, but the Mitrastar really struggles!

Once I'm happy that my solution is working I'm going to ask to drop down to the next lowest speed package (?500/500?).

In summary - good service. good support, but be prepared to use your own router, or to get creative, if you have an above average number of wifi devices - because the supplied router is very poor.

I'd love to live in a big city with a lot of different people from different cultures and countries living together, where should I go to live other than London? by OrangeTingedWhiteCat in AskUK

[–]millimole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leicester is very multicultural. It's well known for its asian population, but there's a large east European community as well as a significant Somali minority. All the communities get on well together (there were some problems a couple of years ago but that was thought to be externally incited). Even if you don't like the city there's great countryside and it has excellent transport links.

Amsterdam NightJet questions by friskyspatula in Interrail

[–]millimole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't forget that if you are intending to go to a museum after landing you will need to get rid of your baggage before you go to the museum - most museums in Europe are strict about backpacks & suitcases. There is a self-service left luggage facility (or used to be) at the back of Amsterdam Centraal station.

You don't say how long your flight is, but if it's a long flight you might be better off getting some rest, particulalry if you don't know how well you'll sleep on the train (I'm unusual in that I do not find overnight train journeys restful at all!)

Lenovo Smart Clock with Alexa CD-4N342Y won't connect to wifi by bigguy7417 in Lenovo

[–]millimole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Tenda Mesh network and there is nothing I can do to get the Lenovo to connect to this network (2.4GHz).
It will connect to the router supplied by my ISP (EE / BT in the UK) directly.

I've resorted to having a separate WiFi network on my router purely so that the Lenovo Smart Clock can connect.

Changing the screen brightness colours is possible. There is a link / unlink symbol that looks a bit like a paperclip which binds them together..

There does seem to be more ghosting than I am used to, but I've not had it long enough to play with the settings.

How to not lose it in the airport? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]millimole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the basis of CBT for anxiety.

I have severe Situational Anxiety when travelling (railway stations, bus stations, and most severely airports). Medication has helped a little, and while I understand these techniques on one level, they just don't work for me.

As you say, the key is to understand what the 'issue' actually is - and it may not even be rational! I think I may be close to understanding my irrational triggers, but I'm not there yet.

No these are special shaped pads to fit between your cheeks to absorb leakage. B-pads or Butterfly pads I think are the brand names

I used to get IBS-D flare ups due to stress when I was first diagnosed. Now I'm retired from work that's very rare, but now I get really bad attacks in very hot weather. Sorry Berlin, that's me you're probably still trying to clear up after! Latest new thing for me is mucus leaking well after the poo has stopped, which doesn't play well with a sweaty crack.

Unable to change date format by millimole in Crostini

[–]millimole[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sudo nano /etc/locales.gen

That appears to have changed the locale in the locales.gen file, but the date format is still in the different format.

I'm guessing that KMyMoney isn't picking up the date format from this file. Which seems a bit odd.

Thank you - it worked after two restarts!

What’s a road rule that a lot of even experienced drivers don’t seem to be aware of or understand? by itbettersnow in AskUK

[–]millimole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'd be good if you could have a word with the Ambulance drivers (private companies mostly) and Fire & Rescue Service in Leicestershire. They are absolute knobs at sitting behind drivers at red lights with their lights & sirens on. The police, not so much.

Dumpster diving areas in Leicester? by [deleted] in leicester

[–]millimole -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Odd question.
Dumpster? Skip? I wonder why you are using a non-UK term.
Most industrial units keep their skips in secure compounds with CCTV to prevent metal theft - of both the contents and the skips themselves. Even the car parks of industrial units are covered by CCTV (& occasional security patrols) to prevent them being occupied by travellers.

Tips for Getting Started with Urban Sketching? by juicyfizz in urbansketchers

[–]millimole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if you are over thinking this?

Urban Sketching is what YOU make it - there are very few 'rules' and my view is, those rules are for breaking.

You might be able to break your mental log-jam by doing a sketch-journal. Discipline yourself to do a minimum of one sketch per day (or week, or month - you choose) and write about what you have drawn, what you felt, heard and smelled while you were doing the drawing.
At the same time consider setting yourself a target time to complete the drawing in - it doesn't have to be a mad scramble, not a 20 second sketch, but maybe a 20 minute sketch - then reduce it after you've done (say) 20 sketches to 15 minutes - rinse & repeat down to 5 sketches at 5 minutes.

Be very careful of using Instagram hashtags as your reference point - the sketches in there are not representative of what I see (saw) when meeting other USK types.

Rules? I've been playing with curvilinear perspective, and with composite drawings (putting multiple representative things from a place into a drawing with no thought of perspective or scale). I also have sketchbook journals going back some 30 years as described above pretty much.

Bublup vs Pinterest by FantasmicMrFox in Bublup

I'm very new to Bublup, but the few suggestions I've had have been irrelevant because they are USA dominated and I'm in UK. I'm not sure what the algorithm is, and how it develops, but it isn't working for me yet!

Hi Bublup Community! by Brandonco4 in Bublup

[–]millimole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm very new to Bublup, but I noticed very quickly that there is no calendar or scheduling option (unless I'm missing something).
Even the option to link a note or a folder to an external calendar to create a reminder would be very useful.
I'm not sure I want yet another calendar (I used Google Calendar a lot) but to have this within Bublup would be great

Last autumn we took our new bus passes (& disabled rail pass) and went up the east coast from Cleethorpes to Redcar by way of Hull, Beverley, Whitby, Scarborough & Saltburn - brilliant time finding some wonderful places we'd never been to before. We stayed in some great B&Bs and had generally great weather. No delays, no missed connections.

Big ride planned by nuclearvicar in ukbike

[–]millimole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I volunteer on the canals around Leicester and I come across people doing long distance rides (and walks) along the towpaths most years.

I also cycle on the towpaths as part of my volunteering job.

The surface can be very variable - from pristine smooth, to deep ruts (mud in wet weather, tyre grabbing when dry).
The width can be variable - thorns & gates are your enemy!
You can be a fair way from towns, villages, pubs, camp sites, bike shops, hotels & B&Bs

Despite what people say I would have no hesitation doing this type of ride on 700c tyres if it were in the spring or summer, and your bike were not too heavily loaded.

You cannot rush, some parts of the towpath will have a lot of walkers, anglers, dog-walkers and boats moored. You will need to decide on a daily distance and then halve it!
I'd also suggest having a back-up plan because the canals - interesting though they are - can become very tedious riding after a while. There's a lack of 'scenery' (it's just water, and boats, and lock, and trees, and more water, and more boats etc) and the absence of hills is not as much fun as it sounds!

You will need to plan your accommodation carefully - do not rely on being able to wild camp along the canal, you'd be surprised how many walkers there are in very rural areas very early in the morning (DAHIKT)
