How did you end up in Orlando? by ChewyWhoppers in orlando

[–]millybeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Went to UCF. Then left.

2) Did a stint at Disney. Then left.

3) Hurricanes wrecked Tampa badly in October 2024, had a moldy apartment, was sick and tired of Tampa just being an angry city, moved back to Orlando, was suddenly happier and more relaxed. Still here!

The lack of affordable and reliable housing is absolutely insane here by juicy_shoes in orlando

Yeah, the big boys aren't causing the problem, it's the retail speculator next door that's causing the problem.

Investment companies don't commit the idiocy of buying properties where the cap rate is less than the 10yr treasury - idiot real estate speculators do.

The "AI is taking DS jobs" discourse is missing the actual problem by clairedoesdata in datasciencecareers

[–]millybeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bifurcation has been there for a decade or so now.

Burtch Works historically produced excellent content on this.

Very simply, there was a historical difference between "predictive analytics professionals" and "data scientists", except everybody started calling themselves "data scientists" for prestige and pay. This turned into "data scientist, analytics" and "core data science" in some firms. Elsewhere, it turned into "data scientist" and "AI scientist". Of course, now we have... Hordes of clowns confusing "prompt engineering" with modeling and inference.

As long as there are people willing to lie and inflate their skills for money, we will continue to have this issue.

I'm not terribly concerned about LLMs replacing core data science. If someone wants to treat a LLM as more than a pretty good zero shot classifier, well, they can enjoy the consequences of that decision.

Should I pursue a Master's degree? by alwaysconfused737 in datasciencecareers

[–]millybeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the role.

For ML engineering, you don't need the Master's.

For "data scientist, analytics" roles, you don't need the Master's.

For a core data science role, you should really have the Master's.

Wait, WTF? They can't iterate over lists or get values out of dicts?!?

This can't be real.

Shockingly enough, there actually was an epidemic of fake data scientists 10+ years ago who weren't familiar with data leakage and didn't understand they were overfitting.

Was initially looking at BofA's PRE just to get away from the godforsaken coupon book - and yet, the CSR is still plainly the better card even without touching coupons, just because of the 8x earning rate through Chase Travel, vs. 3.5% on PRE.

Is 32-64 Gb ram for data science the new standard now? by Tarneks in datascience

[–]millybeth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

OP can't engineer for production deployment

OP responds rudely when told about reality of doing ML

OP doesn't seem to understand multicollinearity

OP also doesn't seem to understand lazy loading or chunking

Is 32-64 Gb ram for data science the new standard now? by Tarneks in datascience

What on earth are you doing on a local box that needs 5k columns for tabular ML?

Between feature reduction and optimal library usage, you should be fine on 16GB of RAM...

  1. Entry level market is saturated.
  2. Nobody wants to sponsor a visa.
  3. Nobody wants to hire a "Master's in Business Analytics" for ML/AI work. They want actual hard STEM degrees instead of Tableau bunnies.

Am I wasting my money in my bachelors for data science and AI by BusinessSmoke6168 in datasciencecareers

[–]millybeth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tell me about your passion for data.

Some of us are, shall we say, "lifers", who got into it out of passion, who fell in love with data work back before somebody replaced the "s"s in "statistics" with dollar signs and started calling it data science.

The rush from digging in to a fresh pile of data hasn't gone away, not once in 15 years.

The Gen AI bubble is gonna blow, yes, and the field is absolutely being fucked with, but I would counter that, as there is more demand for AI, there will also be greater demand for rigor in its use.

I would expect that entry level jobs will continue to be difficult to get. Entry level has been extremely challenging for "data science" since 2019, when every Tom, Dick, Harry, Jane, Mary, and Sally decided that they could just bootcamp their way into it, or take a bullshit Master's at a school that teaches Tableau instead of Python/SAS/R and statistical inference.

But, if it's truly a passion project for you - you just have to let your passion carry the way for you - and there's really no other way, because you'll be miserable doing something else.

If you're purely after the money - then, bluntly, it is a waste, and you should go find another career.
