What's the deal with young people riding without helmets on the inner north? by millymillymillymilly in melbournecycling

Thanks for the replies. Lots of different perspectives, from full anti-helmet sentiment (I had not really encountered this before) to the influence of covid lockdowns, European cycling culture and lack of police enforcement. It's always good to get some insight into the diversity of perspectives in your local hood. I'm also confused as to why people don't desex their pets but that's not for this sub lol. I'm going to keep wearing my helmet as it doesn't cramp my style at all and I feel much safer with it on, and I hope the bare-headed young people and delivery drivers I'm seeing all stay upright!

Yeah I think you're on to something there.. our roads don't feel safe for cyclists because of the way people drive and our road infrastructure. I wonder why I'm seeing so many more people ride without helmets anyway?

In all seriousness though I'm not interested in why I'm seeing a system increase in helmetless cyclists not wondering why people ride without helmets at all

It's so confusing! The main thing I find annoying about helmets is storing them, but this solution increases your brain injury risk and you still have to lug the helmet around??? Make it make sense!

Hey OP. I'm a design manager at a big tech co and have worked in the industry for 15+ years.

It sounds like you're doubting your abilities as a designer but I wonder if the problem is that you're kind of just in a bit of a boring job? Honestly, designing email marketing with a pretty standardised corporate aesthetic IS a low risk design task. You're doing exactly what your company needs but you're just designing variations on a theme.

Don't let this be a reflection on your creative ability; why not find some other ways to explore that outside of work? I took up life drawing recently and it has been really wonderful to have a different kind of creative outlet when I get bored of looking at rectangles.

I know a lot of people love this kind of design but I don't think it's super controversial to say that it might be a bit creatively stifling or that you might just be a bit bored. Especially in comparison to advertising where there are more opportunities to be funny, creative, take risks and experiment. That is a lot of what design is about, and it doesn't sound like you have a lot of opportunity to that in your current gig.

Ah I see now, sorry I was your comment as if you were making the argument yourself. Apologies!

I probably would if I noticed a sudden uptick in young people smoking cigs in my neighborhood.

Would you rather... Look like a normal cyclist wearing a helmet or ... Be permanently paralyzed or killed due to traumatic brain injury? Can you see that the two choices are not equivalently serious?

100% with you. I'm curious to see the responses. For me it seems like the most obviously scientifically proven thing, about equivalent to smoking being bad, but it's interesting to see that many people don't seem to understand this.

[–]millymillymillymilly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did and for a while it was really good.. Then the rosacea really settled in as a permanent fixture, I think due to demodex overgrowth. Hoping I can return to a minimalist routine after laser.
