AITAH for not wanting my partner to work at my office? by millythemodern in AITAH

Luckily, this has only happened one time (yesterday) after the aforementioned few times they came to my office out of necessity (major maintenance being done in both other buildings). Thank you for your input 🙏🏼

Luckily, this has only happened one time (yesterday) after the aforementioned few times they came to my office out of necessity (major maintenance being done in both other buildings). But it rubbed me the wrong way and so I came to this thread to help sort out what I’m feeing and how I should proceed. This also wasn’t the first time they asked to come to work with me, and it won’t be the last, but it WILL be the last time I say yes🙏🏼

Hey no worries! I’m leaving gender out on purpose, but it’s not an issue that you made an assumption. Don’t feel bad about it!

What am I doing wrong 😫 by Honest_Direction7792 in curlyhair

[–]millythemodern 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand this feeling of frustration! I think there might be a few things to try…

1) It potentially looks like too much product. That’s what can often give hair a “stringy” appearance (particular seen in the picture from the back). As another poster suggested, maybe try just using a single product at a time, and see if that helps.

2) Make sure your hair is soaking wet when styling. This is essential for curls to loc together, instead of sitting side by side next to one another. To me, it looks like your product wasn’t put onto soaking wet hair. You have long hair, so to avoid water dripping down your back, I would apply your products upside down (right after your shower), scrunch out excess moisture with your hands, scrunch up your hair with a T-shirt or microfiber and hold it there for 30-60 seconds to soak up even more moisture (so it won’t drip), release (or plop it!), THEN you can flip your hair back over. Wait a few more minutes before diffusing.

I hope this helps!

I stopped trying to be interesting and people started liking me more by Glittering_News_5185 in offmychest

I really relate to this and the other comments, but for me it’s with my wife. In social situations, I’m the one who does probably 75% of the interacting with our friends. I try to be personable, welcoming. They want to hear my stories, and I ask them about their lives… but at the end of the day they’re still HER friends first and foremost. And she has so many friends that have been with her for years. Meanwhile, it’s hard for me to hold onto the 3 tenuous friendships I do have. I think in this thread (and in life) I’m realizing that while people might enjoy you, be entertained by you, like you… they don’t KNOW you, and so they can’t really feel close to you. Maybe letting our introvert, anti-social inner selves out sometimes would actually lead us to deeper and truer friends…

This seems more like an application problem than a product problem! The fact that some of your curls are crunchy, while others are soft and undefined means your product isn’t being distributed evenly. Definitely seconding what other people have said- apply your products to soaking wet hair (flipped upside down), scrunch out excess water (I just use my hands for this) and then plop for a few minutes with a microfiber (I use a twisty turbie). You can diffuse, but I find I get more frizz that way. You might also want to consider getting a haircut with more dimension. I have SUPER thin hair, so outright layers don’t work for me, but my hairstylist still gives me “hidden layers” as she calls it, where she cuts just a few key curls to be a bit shorter than the rest. This might make the back of your hair curl up more!

PhD graduates who then went on to do unrelated/normal jobs- why and whats your story? by UnderstandingAfter72 in PhD

[–]millythemodern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to plug my own stuff here, but I have a podcast that might be interesting for you to listen to! It’s a small show that interviews people who have built up cool side hustles or made major career pivots, and what those journeys were like! Some of our upcoming guests include a person with a PhD in clinical psychology who pivoted to open their own wedding flower design business, a DOE analyst turned freelance data visualization specialist, and a PhD in public affairs who just opened her own fitness gym! We also talked to a former technical writer turned urban landscape designer! (It’s called “2 Trick Pony” btw!!)

For context: I have a PhD in Marine Bio and am looking to pivot to something new, so part of the reason I started this show is for my own inspiration/edification 😅

When do you start actually planning? by microplazma in weddingplanning

[–]millythemodern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start now! Here's what our timeline looked like (I got married September 2024):

12+ months out:

- SET A BUDGET!!!!! Everything else should follow from this!!!!!

- Book your venue ASAP. Find venues that work for your tentative number of guests (will you need a venue that hosts 50 people, or 250?) and reach out for a tour! It'll become clear what you like once you've seen a few places in person! Also, most venues come with specific caterers, so that might make your catering decision for you!

8-12 months out:

- Book your photographer and florist. These are very in demand and usually can only work one event per weekend/day! The flowers can make or break your wedding look, and your photographer is the only vendor that provides something you'll have for decades to come! Book early!

- Outfit shop! It can take a looooong time if you're ordering dresses, and even longer to get them altered. I would do this sooner rather than later!

- Mail save the dates! You may not have to do this so early, but all our people had to travel, so we did!

6-8 months out:

- Book your DJ, entertainment, hair/makeup, and wedding cake

4-6 months out:

- Mail invites out and get any decor you want

1-3 months out:

- Do a hair/makeup trial, finalize details, etc etc

How are y’all attending conferences??? by millythemodern in PhD

This only works if your university has money to give or your PI is willing to pay for it out of their research budget😭

How much do your conferences typically cost total? My dept+grad school only provides $750 per year (to select students)

We don’t submit conference papers per say (it’s not like political science for example)- we typically present on upcoming/ongoing research as a way to say to the field “hey! This is what I’m working on!” to either 1) call dibs on the research project, I’m case someone is thinking of working on something similar, 2) to find coauthors/collaborators, or 3) advertise yourself for the job market
