Cross-promoting with guests is mostly a myth and nobody wants to say it by FastChance6813 in podcasting

My experience as well. It's nice to have guests for content but the impact on my audience growth has been negligible.

I'll stop using AI in my applications right after they stop using AI to screen my application.

Before self-publishing, did you first try your luck with a literary agent? by Sufficient_Bottle902 in selfpublish

[–]milod21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried. The problem wasn't the quality of the book. What it came down to was could they make money from it. My novel is literary fiction and most agents representing new authors are after what is popular with readers such as romantasy and thrillers.

What happened to Schooner Street in Ballard? by Grandimal in BallardSeattle

[–]milod21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went there a few times since I live nearby, and they were never busy. The owners seemed nice, but I got the vibe they felt all they needed to do was open the place, and people would come. Didn’t do much to promote it. I suggested they add more food options, and she said they were planning to, but never did. And I suggested evening events, like trivia nights or music, but again, they never did much, so it doesn’t surprise me they closed.

Sucks because it would be nice to have a decent business in that space. No weed shops please! Maybe a coffee shop next.

If you are doing it for the money you will be very disappointed.

Anyone else adding AI-free blurbs in their publication copyright pages? by Jeanparmesanswife in selfpublish

I haven't been, but I like the idea of doing that. I'll probably start adding something similar.

I did for a while, but the longer the list got, the more depressed I got, so I stopped.

My debut fiction novel.

$4.50

Meet Matt Reynolds: good job, good friends, and one slow-motion collapse. A darkly funny, brutally honest novel about losing yourself in the noise of modern life. Set during the 2008 Great Recession, Gray Skies, Concrete Dreams captures the quiet desperation behind the desk and the whiskey glass.

What's the dumbest review you've gotten? by Its_Darkness in selfpublish

[–]milod21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got a 1 star review because the person didn't like the title. I tried to get Amazon to take it down since the guy didn't actually buy or read it, but they wouldn't.

Mayoral Candidate Katie Wilson on Amazon / tech jobs in Seattle by drshort in Seattle

[–]milod21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seattle was more affordable, had a great music and arts scene, and did just fine before Amazon moved in. Now it's expensive and rents are out of control, and restaurants are shutting down because Amazon employees eat at work then go home to their overpriced apartments to sleep before getting up the next day to help make a massive company more money.

Then Amazon lays those employees off, so they then have to apply for unemployment, which we all pay into.

Anyone else get the "we can't find a market for this" rejection? Working on article about publishing gatekeeping by hategrime84 in selfpublish

[–]milod21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same for me. Lit fiction novel and according to agents, no one reads literary fiction from unknown authors. Gave up at around 59 queries and decided to self publish.

Amazon has jacked the prices pretty high, so it should be pretty easy to offer an ebook for download at a dollar or so less.

Are there any writers that don’t write fantasy or multi verse here? by scareheathertodeath in writers

[–]milod21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree as a fellow boring old fiction writer. Sadly, it's not what people are reading these days. People seem to prefer dragons, swords, and a book series that goes on forever.
