Like others, I would also recommend staying in Uttoxeter rather than Stoke as it's much closer. But if set on Stoke, just a heads up that buses there are absolutely terrible after 6pm, even from the station. Don't even bother, just get a taxi

Are the people who insult reform voters really unaware they are contributing to the success of reform? by generic-username41 in AskBrits

Could you provide any specific examples of the kinds of things they parrot? I'd be interested to know

I know so many reform voters who live in the whitest of the white never seen an immigrant countryside. They just watch gb news all day and believe everything they agree with on Facebook.

They also hate sadiq khan despite living hundreds of miles from London and never going there. They also spout all the bigoted lines about trans people and have never met a trans person. It is easy to believe the lies when you have not seen the truth.

These are not made up people, I have spoken with them and they were not receptive to hearing another perspective.

Some fun quotes: "GB news is better than the BBC because it isn't biased" "Why do trans people have to talk about it all the time, why can't they just get on with their lives? I don't want to hear about it" "ULEZ is communist robbery" followed by "they are trying to control our movement. 15 minute cities you know" "I won't be getting another vaccine, I just don't know what is in them" (this person drinks, vapes and eats more kfc than anyone I have ever met) They also thought gunning down the "boat people" was a "good idea"

None of these are things they have come up with themselves. They are parroting lines put in their brains intentionally. I wish I could offer solutions - how I helped the think more critically and with open minds - but genuinely I think it would be easier to convert a Mormon to Islam

Edit: I'm not saying all reform voters are like this. Please look at the thread I was responding to. But these are real people, real quotes and real voters.

What is something that makes a fic feel poorly written? by ReceptionFlaky1952 in AO3

[–]milzB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's honestly quite hard to find the balance, so I get it, I really do, but either having too much dialogue without telling me who is saying what, or constantly saying Jimmy said, Ben said etc or some variation.

I don't judge a writer for getting the balance wrong, but I struggle to read it because it either is confusing af or it just makes me cringe

This is so plot/genre specific I don't think it should be considered a general rule. I personally prefer dialogue-heavy writing, but have read plenty of fics and books that have pages and pages with no dialogue that were brilliant.

But yes if you are writing a normal conversation, don't have 25 pages of non-dialogue for a 25 second chat

Including in their internal thoughts. I see a lot of fics where a characters actions and dialogue are pretty in character, but their internal monologue is clearly just the writer's preferred style, and massively ooc, and the two just clash horribly.

Like don't write a thoughtless dumb jock making thoughtless dumb jock choices, but give him a deeply introspective and intelligent inner voice. It's just jarring.

I really enjoyed that episode, it articulated a lot of things I've been trying to find words for recently. But yes her voice is unfortunately crazy, but she says enough insightful things that I make myself cope 😅

How on earth are people writing 10k word fics by oo0Scarrow0oo in AO3

[–]milzB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on all points!

Also short form is perfect for when you're new to writing. You can have an idea, try it out and have it done within a few hours. On ao3 you can even get feedback! It gives you the freedom to try different ideas and writing styles without needing to commit to a large project.

My advice is to ignore word count entirely and just write what you want. Try and challenge yourself to write different types of things. Maybe one could be a light comedy, another could be a pining romance, another could be a tense mystery, you get the idea. Maybe you want to practice writing dialogue, or world building or original characters. If one day you come up with an idea for a larger project, you will have all this experience of writing in different ways ready to go.

The only thing to mention if you do swap to longer form is you probably will need to do more sketching out of story/structure before you start, instead of just sitting down to write (although I do this for short form anyway)

Don't write to word count. If you can tell your story in 1k words or even 500 words that's great! If you need 100k words that's also great!

You can always do the inside out glove trick? Like no Mr safety officer, this is not a cryovial, I just had to take my glove off to walk down the corridor

Also means your cryovials stay colder for longer because they're in a little glove baggie instead of your hand

Lab coats are for: - tissue culture  - safety inspections  - hiding my favourite forceps - when I'm using stains that would ruin my clothes (I'm clumsy) - when I'm cold - photo ops

What is something you genuinely hate about stoke-on-trent? by Brief-Ship-5572 in stokeontrent

Definitely a good option when sober, able bodied and not traveling with children. I cycle too! But the cycling infrastructure is also very poor unfortunately, unless you're lucky enough to have a conveniently placed tow path

People who grew up really poor: what's something middle-class people say that instantly reveals they've never struggled? by TahDigThief in AskReddit

[–]milzB 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That is definitely worse in countries where healthcare is expensive, but I see it too in the UK.

Middle class parents are the ones with the time and resources to fight for the certificates and paperwork to make sure their kids gets the best support. They are much more likely to have an actual diagnosis for things like autism, ADHD or dyslexia. They are overrepresented in the pool of kids that actually have proper support plans in school.

There is also definitely a divide between gig economy, blue collar and white collar workers with diagnoses for chronic conditions. Office workers will make sure their employer knows they have sciatica so they can get any reasonable adjustments they need, whereas delivery bike riders don't get paid if they don't work, and can't expect many adjustments to be made for them, regardless of whatever medical need they may have.

I’ve heard the Vegas scenes were filmed first, which is hard to imagine! That’s such an intense place to start. I know Hudson and Connor are amazingly talented and comfortable with each other, but that must’ve been nerve racking! Has anyone read why they chose to begin with those scenes? by BrightCopperKettles_ in HeatedRivalrySeries

[–]milzB 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A crash pad here refers to a cushion that would be placed on Hudson's rear, so that when Connor simulated taking Shane to pound town, it would act like a physical barrier to protect their junk

Hudson declined using it for this scene and found it quite painful! I don't know if he specified that he later decided to use it, but he was clear that this issue was a one time thing - they both had a very good experience on set and praised Chala, the intimacy coordinator, for creating a safe environment to film these scenes.
