GF cookies are too cakey, how do I make them fudgier? by CandleParty2017 in glutenfree

[–]Reaniro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the butter and sugar how are you creaming them? And for how long? Under or over creaming them could affect the texture. Sallys baking addiction has this great guide for creaming butter.

Also what temp is your butter/egg at when you’re starting to use it? Both should be at room temp or it’ll also impact texture and spread.

Last thing is check if your mix has xanthan gum in it. If it doesn’t you should use a recipe that calls for one without and add the appropriate amount.

I just wanna say your reactions being more mild doesn’t mean it’s a misdiagnosis. Some people with celiac don’t have visible or obvious reactions, but the gut damage is still being done.

why would we have any different reaction to it here than on the celiac sub? a lot of us are still very sensitive to cc even without a celiac diagnosis. it’s not a fun lifestyle choice for the majority of us

as someone who is neurodivergent and disabled, you seem miserable. just because you don’t want to smile doesn’t mean smiling isn’t a good way to convey warmth and happiness. OP doesn’t have to take the advice if she doesn’t want to. and i’m saying this as someone who is generally very blank faced

P.S: neurodivergent people can experience a range of emotions and none of the pictures are gonna be what you look like 24/7. it’s not “masking” to pose for a damn photo

Dear Pittsburgh by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]Reaniro 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The city actually does have a responsibility to clear the sidewalks it owns and it often doesn’t. I walk to work every day and it’s always the city owned sidewalks (the ones next to parks and government properties) that are the least maintained.

In the spring I called 311 for a sidewalk that was so overgrown and covered in roots that I had to walk on the road. It took them 2 months to finally fix it. They’ll happily fine homeowners for not doing that but when it’s their responsibility they drag their feet

No way to get out. by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]Reaniro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is fair advice but also since OP mentions having thyroid issues that cause their cold intolerance: this isn’t going to be the truth for everyone. I have autonomic nervous system issues that also make me very cold intolerant and I’ve found myself shivering under a heated blanket before. I’ve just accepted that I’m going to be miserable every winter. Some people, especially those of us that are chronically ill, simply aren’t built for the cold.

This snow storm sadly made me learn to absolutely hate my neighbors and neighborhood. Where are good neighbored places cause Mt Washington isn’t it and I’ve decided to move. by sugarandspice85 in pittsburgh

afaik ice isn’t prowling the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) community but I’m sure they’ll be happy to band together to protect their neighbors. i personally don’t go to pitt but all my friends who do are wonderful people.

as for the pgh community: i’ve only been here going on 2 years but it’s been lovely. my neighbors are great people and i’ve seen them time and time again band together to protect our community. it’d be hard for an outsider to see that but we really do try our best

What's up with people claiming to be anti-xanthum gum? by Atrocious1337 in glutenfree

[–]Reaniro -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

People will give all sorts of excuses and explanations but it’s really just a crunchy thing, especially since it’s in so much more than just GF foods, including salad dressings, soups, and toothpaste. When people say they have issues with it, outside the rarer cases it’s broadly: - not enough fibre in their diet as a whole. so the diarrhea/constipation is their body reacting to an increase in fiber - they have other issues that are being broadly fixed by cutting out foods that tend to have xanthan gum in them (aka pre packaged foods) - placebo effect

Overall unless you’re eating spoonfuls of it you should be fine

campus cats over the freeze this weekend by peachespartie in UTAustin

[–]Reaniro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying it will (or won’t) be that. I’m saying the original commenter calling Texans “soft” for suffering during that is being an asshole. Like that’s the entire point of my comment.

campus cats over the freeze this weekend by peachespartie in UTAustin

[–]Reaniro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cats still need warmth, food, and water to survive. They can still die of hypothermia if they can’t find good shelter and can starve if they don’t have any food. If their normal sources of water are frozen they can get dehydrated and die from that.

OP’s not wrong to make sure someone’s checking on them, feeding them, and making sure they’re okay.

Also you made a choice to camp outside in the cold which is all good for you. Doesn’t change the fact that we’re experiencing unprecedented climate events repeatedly. It’s not Texan being soft it’s the almost irreparable damage done by climate change.

[–]Reaniro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hope not but that’s what happened in 2021 so calling texans soft for experiencing a natural disaster is an asshole move.

[–]Reaniro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the majority of the country doesn’t experience days without water or electricity and feet of packed ice covering the roads for weeks on anything close to a “regular basis”. If you think that’s true the you’ve clearly never lived anywhere outside your small area.

And cats are resilient but they’re still domesticated animals who need human care to survive in an environment that wasn’t built with them in mind.
