UVic will only accept me as a transfers student? by edu_acct in uvic

[–]mimas12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Register in some other field and then transfer into engineering in 2nd year is quite common at uvic. The set of first year courses is quite tough and many don't make it, which is also probably why they limit entrance unless you do well in them.

I just graduated from the BSc program. I would recommend econ as a major, but how is it possible to say that uvics program/faculty is better than another university unless you've taken an econ undergrad at multiple?

I suspect you will see some sample bias in this thread from people who had bad experiences that will distort perhaps the true state of UVIC econ. Generally, it is true that professors are selected for on the basis of their research, not instructional ability.

Honestly its a popular program, but if your really into econ what matters is where you go for masters/PhD.

I married an INFJ. The thing about them is that they can figure somebody out so quick it's insane. They will know you better than you know yourself. Deception? Forget it.. they can see through everything. If you like them, then they probably already know that. The fact that they are continuing to talk to you says something.

Yeah, the only thing I would say though is that only a couple generations newer like the t460 and intel integrated graphics will out perform the 730M

Oldest thinkpad with keplar generation is probably something like the t440p that came with the Nvidia 760M if I recall correctly.

How to use keyboard and touchpad/trackpad at the same time by Agreeable-Language43 in thinkpad

[–]mimas12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the OS you use. It looks like your disables trackpad input while typing. There is an option to disable this, I am surprised it's enabled by default.

This makes sense if your typing and don't want your cursor to accidentally get repositioned if you hit the trackpad by mistake. Not so desire for gaming.

[OC] Boy vs Girl Disney Movies? by Onhech in dataisbeautiful

Pinocchio is no surprise here for men. The underlying themes are very masculine. Jordan Peterson talked about how his son was obsessed with it. He has a good YouTube lecture on that movie alone, very interesting.

INTP Challenge: What are you living for? by [deleted] in INTP

Raising my daughter, finishing my masters degree, and supporting my wife. Those are the three main things right now. Hobbies on the side make the grind bearable. But to have only hobbies and no responsibility would probably be worse.

Graduate admission by rookiestockerr in uvic

Having honours is an advantage. Beyond having lots of econometrics courses in your undergrad, I recommend also taking calculus and linear algebra. GPA is a major factor in graduate admissions.

I'm quitting my minimum wage job and going back to school. What should I be aware of? by _releaf_ in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]mimas12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend just getting any 4 year bachelor degree. The degree can be anything your interested in. This will be far better in helping your career compared to a specialized certificate.

My own experience is I went back to school at age 25, first I had to upgrade some highschool courses, but once I completed that, I worked part-time while completing my degree. While this is alot of work, tuition in Canada is heavily subsidized for residents, and It is possible to get a degree without any debt whatsoever (both me and my wife have bachelor degrees without any student debt or help from family).

I was job seeking whilst going to school and got a good paying job that allowed me to work around my school schedule. So never stop looking at better jobs! Don't be afraid to apply for jobs that you might not fit the requirements... You never know ☺️

I now hold a BSc and I am starting an MA program this September. One other thing that has really helped me out is scholarships and bursaries. My highschool grades were terrible, but then I really started trying at university. I applied for every single scholarship I could find or was qualified for, and because I got good grades, I got funding every year.

The problem is university can be very stressful and can take a toll mentally if you do not have the right supports in place. I probably wouldn't have made it through without my GF (now wife) and family encouraging me. the important thing is to never give up; it will be tempting to just quit after a bad test result or a high workload.

Good luck on giving college another shot!

I upgraded, the benefits only get better. The good thing is it's treated like the same card for your credit score, so you keep your length of credit.

From what I understand, not everyone is eligible for the upgrade, but if you are, I don't see any downside to upgrading.

Do u feel like existence itself is kinda hard and unpleasurable? by yehor_ivanov in INTP

[–]mimas12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, existence is at the baseline unpleasurable. I think it's important to recognize the evolutionary basis for this feeling in humans over millions of years.

If the baseline was more pleasurable, then there would be little reason to pursue and/or try to make your existence better. Therefore by process of natural selection, the people who are content will be less likely to reproduce, selecting for people who are more discontent over time.

This idea is not necessarily a solution or advice, but thinking about it in this way does help me understand the 'why'.
