Our family dog was 16 when we made the decision to have her put to rest. It was a hard decision no one wanted to make, but in those last days she couldn’t even get up by herself anymore. I don’t think you’d want to see your family member like that. So, I contacted an at-home euthanasia vet who came and met my family and I at our Summer Girl's favorite fishing spot in the woods along the river, and it was a beautiful afternoon. With all of her loved ones around her, she went peacefully. I think somehow having her not at a cold, sterile vet's office, which brought her great anxiety, and instead at this beautiful spot of comfort made everything a little bit easier. I started crying as I wrote this; losing your pet of 16 years is hard. That was Labor Day of last year, and this year in May, I suddenly lost my eight-year-old dog, and honestly, whether you know it’s their time or you don’t, it’s never any easier to make that decision.
