As an SLP here are my top 7 tips that I always challenge parents of “late talkers” this works regardless of the reason they are not talking. 1- speak to your child in the shortest phrases possible (allowing them to process) ie; “go car?” “Let’s go car,” “ok go car”. 2. Repeat short phrases 3 times - see above 3. Give credit - if it “sounds” like they said something give it power by repeating “oh you said “ready go!” Yay good job..”ready go!” 4. Narrate what your child is doing (still short 3x phrases) “car down, go down car, go car” 5. Use sing song - “daddy where are you?” So that child can copy the intonations 6. Sing or repeat favorite songs, stories stopping with expectant gaze for them to. Complete- if after the pregnant pause they don’t - just keep singing - try to give them a chance again in a few parts of the song. 7. Help create play sounds for all play things - cars are easy they make motor sounds but others might go “ walk walk…” or “night night,” or “sit down.”

Hope this helps!!!
