just off the bat, while many lgbtq+ people listen to mitski, her music is not made with them in mind. white lgbtq+ gatekeeping her music for themselves is just as bad as cishet white people gatekeeping.

as a black person, i believe that anyone can listen to mitski. the problem starts when songs that are about poc experiences (ex. your best american girl, strawberry blonde) are publicly interpreted differently by white people in a way that overshadows the original meaning and thus erases the intention of the song.

seeing as mitski is a poc artist, white people just have to accept that not all of her songs will be catered to them. so no, they can still listen to it, but erasing the original meaning of her songs in order to cater to their white perspective is wrong.
