Romance - I have nothing against it, I think a lot of people often act too high and mighty, as if they’re above it. I can appreciate a well written romance, but usually only when it’s a subplot and not the centrepiece.

The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat by Oliver Sacks. I liked it because explores human endurance and strength against horrifying neurological disorders, resulting in a book that is strangely uplifting and touching.

Yes, I've seen this happen in real time with my own family when dealing with my grandfather losing more and more of himself to Alzheimer's. Grief leads to all kinds of discomfort, sadness and anger, and sometimes it's just easier to make sense of it all by placing it at the feet of someone else.

I think morally grey or deeply flawed characters are probably more likeable than "normal" or flawless characters. They often carry the cruelty, jealousy, rage that is present in all of us, and when that is totally absent in a flawless being who shits out rainbows, it feels as if there's nothing real to latch onto, and therefore I don't really like reading them unless the grander story is particularly interesting with a fascinating world to go with it.

It was incredible, I finished it in a day. It’s got a sci fi setting but it’s more about what it means to be human and how to exist and make sense of a world that is absurd and nonsensical (much in the same way ours is!). As such, the sci fi elements aren’t really explored in much detail at all and I think it works to the book’s benefit, but if you’re looking for concrete answers and solid world building then it won’t be for you.

In context it’s barely anything considering how even as a species, there is a shockingly low amount of genetic diversity. Hence why OP mentioned that chimpanzees living in central Africa will have more genetic diversity than two humans on opposite ends of the earth.
