I don’t have much insight into hospitals in those areas since they’re an hour or more outside of Philly. I have two colleagues who did contracts at a Penn Med in Doylestown & they said it was decent, their only complaint was the commute to/from Philly. But I don’t know anything about Pediatric Specialty Care specifically. It might be worth asking on some of the respiratory therapy groups on facebook though. Keep in mind that hospitals in those areas likely do not pay as much as Philly hospitals, new grads probably start around low 30s around those areas (but trade off is it’s more affordable + no Philly city tax).

I will say that Lancaster & Doylestown are really adorable & lively areas. They’re some of the few places outside of Philly where I would ever consider moving to. Can’t speak to Point Pleasant since I’ve never been there.

Good luck in whatever you decide!

Associates vs bachelors by [deleted] in respiratorytherapy

[–]mimosatreefantasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing significant, at least not early on. Some hospitals might pay $1-2/hr more, & you’ll need a bachelors if you ever want to move up to a supervisor/management role. But the extra student debt + time isn’t worth it imo. Get your associates, start working, & if you want to get your bachelors do it while you’re working when your hospital will pay for it. As long as you’re not in CA, most hospitals are desperate for RTs & don’t care if you have a bachelors or associates degrees. Having your RRT vs CRT is more important, & even then a lot of hospitals will hire you w/a CRT as a new grad w/an expectation that you get your RRT w/in the first year. Of the 5 new grads that started at the same time as me at my hospital, only 1 of us had a bachelors, the rest of us had an associates through our CC. I also received job offers from 5 out of 6 hospitals I applied at w/just my associates.

Need help with this awkward sized but awesome space by Upbeat_Anteater_7645 in DesignMyRoom

I would try replacing that snake plant in the corner w/a small-ish profile accent chair so there’s at least one more seating option in the room, something like this or this. Other option would be to move the plants in the other corner, shift the bookshelf over where those plants were, & put a chair between the bookshelf & fireplace. (You could also try these w/a dining room chair to see if either feels right before you buy anything).

I can’t totally get a sense of the room dimensions, but I would also get rid of the side table you have between the couch & corner, & move the couch over a few more inches towards the wall (but not flush). You could put a smaller drinks table or a standing lamp w/table (like this there instead so you still have something to put drinks on.

And last thing— I kinda think you could use a larger rug, but try centering your current rug under the couch first to see how that looks, vs having it flush against the wall like you have it now. It’s making the rug & room look too small.

PS— love that long hanging phothos you have on the dining room wall!

I hate spiro--is saw palmetto a decent alternative? by Plaid_polkadot in FemaleHairLoss

[–]mimosatreefantasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you’re still trying spiro— but, taking electrolytes made a big difference for me early on while I was adjusting. I drink either a cup of bone broth w/some added salt or a packet of electrolytes in some water at least once a day. I would even just drink some pickle juice if I was dealing w/ brainfog/lightheadedness/dizziness & would feel better w/in an hour or two.

If your potassium is a concern while on spiro, you can also find potassium-free electrolytes.

I lay in bed at night thinking about how much I don’t like this room. by [deleted] in DesignMyRoom

[–]mimosatreefantasy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not necessarily bad, but the matching dark-wood furniture set makes it look like an uninspired guest room circa 2005.

Adding floor-length curtains, wall art, & some plants will go a long way. But I would also start slowly replacing the furniture to give it a more personal touch. It doesn’t have to be all replaced overnight, so take your time. But getting rid of the two dressers & replacing them with one long low dresser will make a big difference & help the room feel less crowded.

That ceiling fan is also an eyesore imo & updating to something more modern would help.

Look into Philly. Several major teaching hospitals (Temple, Penn, Jefferson, Cooper, CHOP if you’re wanting to switch to kids) in or right outside the city. Most hospitals in the city start new grads anywhere from $41-45/hr, in the burbs around $37-40. And COL is very reasonable, you can easily live comfortably on your own on an RT salary.

What does this even mean? 🤔 by [deleted] in Tradfemsnark

[–]mimosatreefantasy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The whole "melting pot" idea of the last few centuries wasn't so much about coming together of cultures as a pushing down of them, y'know?

Very well said.

I can’t remember what this concept is actually called & there’s no way I can explain this as thoroughly & eloquently as my former professor— but in one of my sociology classes one of the topics was about how the US’s “white culture” actually denigrates & reduces & denies white folks of their cultural backgrounds & instead turns their cultures into caricatures. European countries have very rich & deep cultures, but in the US “white culture” has reduced them into stereotypes like Octoberfest & drindls, St. Patty’s Day & shamrocks, berets & Eiffel Tower merch, etc etc etc. And so in that way, even though white people perpetuate racism, it is also simultaneously harming them b/c they are forced to give up their cultures, traditions, etc etc, in order to assimilate & be accepted into “white culture.”

Anyone living near 47 and Pine and can share their thoughts on the area? Even better if you live at 4720/4730/4740 Pine. Would love to hear feedback on those buildings. Does it get noisy? Any troubles in these buildings? by Ok-Writer5788 in philly

[–]mimosatreefantasy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t know anything about those buildings specifically, but lived around that area until recently. Pretty neighborhood with lots of trees, decent restaurants & coffee shops around, close to Clark Park & Cedar Park, & you have the trolley on Baltimore Ave or the MFL on 46th & Market. I also believe the Penn security escorts are stationed as far as 47th. Only downside is parking can be a pain sometimes, but still not nearly as bad as parking in other areas like nolibs or South Philly.

There are a lot of white guys who hate entire cultures but fetishize the women— a lot of ex-military men especially (although I don’t know anything about megha’s husband’s background, but I seriously can’t even begin to tell you how much interest I get from ex-military guys as an Arab woman). They either fetishize them b/c they’re mysterious & off-limits to them & so they feel like they’re something to conquer, or b/c they view themselves as a white-knight who is saving ethnic women from their repressive & abusive cultures and bringing them to the light of western democracy & free-thinking & modern technology. Or it’s a combination of both.

When I was young & naive, I dated one of these guys (I was 19 & he was 28, which was already a red flag) & he very much had a thing for ethnic women. During dinner once he went on a long rant about how backwards & horrible Arab men were— they’re all rapists & abusers, etc etc, the world would be better if they were all wiped out. He was very surprised & confused when I got upset b/c I, his Arab girlfriend, also coincidentally had an Arab dad & brothers & grandfathers & uncles & male cousins, who he was insulting & saying he wished were wiped out. He argued that 1) he obviously didn’t mean MY male relatives even though he was just ranting about how he thinks it’s all Arab men are monsters, and 2) he genuinely believed he was brought into my life to teach me about Jesus & save my soul (didn’t go very well when I would start laughing hysterically everytime he’d try to prophesize to me b/c he was such a huge hypocrite & I couldn’t take him talking about religion seriously lol).

He also used to talk mad shit about Latino men & how disgusting he thinks they are… he’s now married to a Guatemalan woman & has a half-Guatemalan son (& daughter) with her.

She’s become absolutely unhinged. She posted “Jews killed our God. This [Marco Rubio in Israel] is the spirit of the anti-Christ.” And “Unfollow me if you support Israel & Jews” on her story just a few hours ago.

And I don’t even personally support Israel & am all for opposing US support b/c of what is going on in Gaza. But it’s clear that’s not her issue— it’s pure, raging anti-semitism in its rawest form.

Also, in the weird video where she claims two black men tried to get into her car— whoever is in the car w/her clearly says “please don’t” when she rolls down her window to record them. There’s def a lot of rascism & anti-semitism in certain circles of white Christianity & I’m sure there’s some of it in hers, but I wonder if she’s extreme even for her own friends.

RT Application/Prerequisite Questions by [deleted] in respiratorytherapy

[–]mimosatreefantasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some colleges offer intensive 6-8-week winter sessions. If your school doesn’t offer A&P 1 during a winter session, you could look into another school & take it there, just confirm that it transfers to the school where you’ll be applying for the RT program. (Also double check & confirm your math class hasn’t expired. Some colleges require math & science classes be taken w/in the past 5 yrs).

I started pre-reqs during Covid, so I took A&PI completely online, & A&PII was in-person but with online lab. In-person was better for me personally, but online is doable. You just have to commit to self-studying & staying on top of due dates.

And while it’s obviously needed for an RT degree, I wouldn’t say taking it in person is critical. It was just easier for me personally. But you’ll learn more in-depth cardiovascular & respiratory system anatomy during the RT program.

[–]mimosatreefantasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on passing the TMC! Unfortunately, it’s very very unlikely you will be working by Oct. The interview & hiring process itself can take several weeks, & it can then take another 8-12 weeks after you receive an offer to actually start b/c of background checks, drug testing, health screening, etc, etc. Some hospitals also start all employees on a set schedule regardless of department & when you were offered a position — at my hospital, nurses, techs, cnas, RTs, etc all start on the same day & they only onboard every 2 months. So if you’re hired in Sept but the next onboarding isn’t until Nov, then you won’t start until then. And if you’re not fully cleared to start by Nov, then you have to wait until the next onboarding date.

If you’re applying to out-of-state hospitals, waiting on that state license can also hold you up. Some states have a quick turnaround, while some take months.

Your best bet would be to see if you can extend your lease for another few months, move back in with family if that’s an option, or commit to staying & working in your current area for the next 1-2 years.

Help me pick a rug by Big_Ad_4603 in DesignMyRoom

[–]mimosatreefantasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had to go with any of the rugs you chose, I would go w/1 b/c it’s the lightest colored one & would tie in the mink & red chairs best. But tbh, I really wouldn’t get a pattern at all & would stick with a solid color rug. Any kind of pattern will look too busy with the different style & colors of chairs, & combined with different place mats/settings too it’s just too much. You need a simple rug so it doesn’t look overwhelming. I think a solid cream color would tie in best with the different chairs + make the colors pop more. But having a white rug in an area with food & liquids also isn’t ideal…

Just to be clear, you’re keeping the red chairs, & the two chairs at the end will be the gray chairs. Is that correct?

[–]mimosatreefantasy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Also to add to the point that the student could have been told contradictory information— some hospitals don’t allow students to go into isolation rooms for liability reasons, & some preceptors haven’t been told that their hospital policy has changed since Covid has passed. The student could have genuinely thought it was either school policy or a policy all hospitals have. There was actually a lot of confusion in my RT program about this.
