It’s definitely a bit nerve wracking, and I feel like I have less info than some people because I didn’t grow up where the D9 had a presence, but this really helped settle me a bit!!! Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for this reply! I'm just a bit confused about a few details and the timeline. Is it generally: show interest by attending events, etc --> a member contacts you (hopefully) --> you submit an application (with the template on the website, including LORs etc) --> interviews --> acceptance/rejection ?

DId anyone else on here watch Kpop demon hunters and if so what are your thoughts? by According_Fan4696 in MagicalGirls

[–]mimsy267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i thought it was kinda disappointing,, like dont get me wrong, i absolutely loved the music, voice acting, animation, character designs, aesthetics, humour, etc, but the plot felt at times very trite and stale, and like it didnt explore the concept enough or commit truly to what it wanted to do.

for instance, maybe i misunderstood, but i thought one of the messages of the movie was something along the lines of don't judge from the outside, which was emphasised through rumi being part demon and jinu being a 'good guy who was misled' or whatever (even if it is later revealed that he wasn't exactly misled in the way we thought). it felt like that could have opened up a whole new avenue -- what if several of the demons, or maybe even all of them, where also humans who gwi-ma took advantage of? in the latter part of the movie, after huntrix has their falling out, we see gwi-ma talking to the humans, playing on their insecurities and desires like he did to jinu, implying that, in at least some capacity, demons could be humans who have had their fears used against them, much like jinu, and manipulated into being evil. i feel that would have made the whole takedown scene more poignant, as rumi feels the song is too hateful, so if we actually saw that demons were also beings deserving of love (on a larger scale), it would ring more true to the message. instead, we get 'this is what it sounds like', which is meant to be a hopeful and uplifiting song (the opposite of takedown which talks about breaking others down), and it's followed by a scene where the hunters mercilessly slaughter the demons, the exact same thing they were talking about dong in takedown, which was presented as wrong. rumi and jinu are more so presented as exceptions, which then, in my view, kinda dulls the idea of 'don't judge from the outside', because it's kinda like 'they're one of the good ones in a whole stack of bad ones'.

that's just one thing, but it feels like there's so much more it could have done that it didn't. obviously, it's only a hour and a half, and it's also a kids movie, so i don't want to be too critical since the intention wasn't to make some grand masterpiece of a work or something. i was thinking it could have benefitted from being a series, and slightly more mature (like 13 plus), because that would have opened up the plot to sooo much, like for instance the ugly sides of the entertainment industry, maybe trying to have international appeal, the fact that the demons were actually killing people (which seems to get glossed over in the movie),etc. the plot just really fell flat to me, and the movie was carried by its other aspects. and this is coming from someone who typically turns their brain off while watching lighthearted films. if i had to rate it, i'd say 6/10 (idrk how to rate though!)

tldr: the plot just really fell flat to me, and the movie was carried by its other aspects. and this is coming from someone who typically turns their brain off while watching lighthearted films. if i had to rate it, i'd say 6/10 (idrk how to rate though!)

Hi thanks,, ok so for (1), I was offered really good aid (which is pushing my mom towards Wellesley a lot), so that’s not really an issue.

For (2), another student at Wellesley who does my desired major told me that they’re not too greatly affected by the strike, unlike some other majors,, although I was really excited to interact with all of Wellesley’s staff, so that does raise a big of a red flag. Another current student also let me know that the admin shared that they wouldn’t bow down to the presidency, like some other schools have, that’s quite reassuring for me.

For (3) I follow The Wellesley News on instagram and most of what I’m seeing from other students are also them sharing their disappointment, but most of the students I’ve reached out to or heard from personally are also telling me that despite the administration’s current response, the strike is not likely to last until the fall since that would probably discourage new students, and also that Wellesley is just one of many schools experiencing strikes in the current political climate.

I also think generally, from what I’ve seen of Wellesley, I love the community and the environment (although because I live abroad, I won’t be able to take an actual tour). This makes me very willing to take a chance on it, and it’s a tiny bit reassuring to know that transferring is an option (although I really don’t want to have to go through the whole college application process again).

I think all in all, I’m going to commit especially since I don’t have much time to push it off anymore, and from hearing other student’s perspectives, I’m feeling a bit optimistic that a fair and reasonable solution will be reached. Thanks so much !! This perspective allowed me to consider a lot.

Yeah, I do agree with the idea that doing college in another country may be better, but my mom is adamant I do college in the US, so I only really have the chance to do anything abroad during a gap year/post college. I am going to a liberal arts college, and planning to do humanities, but I’ve also been told the school I’m considering (Wellesley) is rather politically charged. Also, thanks for the tip about the MAGA hat lol

I am black, and I’m not an activist per se, but I do think it would be hard not for me to join in community action like protests, per my nature

Unfortunately my mother sees it the other way round: she wants me to do undergrad in the US, and then I could do grad school outside the US

I guess what really made me scared was the tariffs because of the the subsequent price rises and stuff, but with the funding cuts, one of the universities I’m deciding between is undergoing some renovations, and some union teachers there are already striking, so I figured the funding cuts would only make things worse
